I just received better sax reeds today and, like you, I right away noticed the rough texture. Have not had a chance to try them. I have been using Select Jazz D’Addario and, by just their appearance, I feel the quality of cane is much better than Better Sax.
I'm with you. But I had a bad experience with "Select Jazz", so I am reluctant to buy them again. What happened was, I bought 4 boxes of 3 Light, and every one of them played great for about 2-3 hours, then stopped vibrating freely. It was weird and frustrating, because I liked those reeds.
Great question! I mean to say that, even after soaking the water, the reed is not flat. Every reed gradually curves upward toward the tip of the mouthpiece. I can continue using the reed up until the curve is so much that I cannot play my entire range, nor can I make volume swells.
Mark, thanks for this video!! Just to confirm our reeds are made by Rigotti, Bettersax is made by Marca :)

Thanks for the video. Why do You throw reeds after they warp? If you soak them in water they get straight again.
