I liked the sound of the Lakshmi here, for my taste it balanced well tonally with that particular horn. I've played a Lakshmi, but for me the tone wasn't as interesting as my Florida Links, both original and refaced, but in regard to response and dynamic range the Lakshmi was supreme, it is a beautiful playing piece.

Great video Jay! I got the Jody Jazz Giant (7*) two weeks ago, and I am loving it! Huge sound and projection, while still on the dark side of the spectrum. Beautiful tone, spreaded but also focused when pushed. I saw a resemblance when you described the Better Sax MP. The JD Giant would be also a good addition in this list of darker MPS - although it's not new. I would love to hear the BetterSax vs the Giant comparison!

I`m not Theo Wanne pieces fan and they are all great mouthpieces but when I decided to try the Lakshmi I was sold, this is IMHO the best Wanne mouthpiece in the market, I have been playing it for about 6 months now and love the versatility, tone and how easy it is to play in all registers, I also tried the Burning and Neff is right, great piece as well and the price is also fantastic if you want a great mouthpiece without spending ton of cash.

I'm looking at the Lakshmi, Gaia, and Brahma right now in the hopes of improving on some of the qualities I dislike about my 90s model Brilhart Level Air (which I like overall, but is a bit too bright and difficult to do softer songs, not very warm in the low end). My guess is that it is closer to something like a Durga or Shiva in brightness, but it's only a guess based on videos of other people playing. I do very mixed performances (e.g. jumping from things like Queen "Can't Stop Me Now" to Duke Ellington "In a Sentimental Mood"), so I'm trying to find a good "center of versatility" that can still handle both ends outdoors. In your experience, is the Lakshmi bright enough to do belty songs outdoors like that? From the samples I hear I really like the warm low end it has. I've seen other reviews say the Gaia is pretty versatile as well, but just a touch brighter. I'm torn on what to try first since I don't live near any stores that carry these and have to deal with orders/shipping/restocking for any changes. Any experience with Theo Wanne pieces is appreciated and would be helpful.

So what I've heard. I like least and most expensive mpcs of all. Yours has a great focus and depth that the others don't have except the JodyJazz. The Jody mpc had the most complex sound, in that it had a pure roundness to the sound as well as depth. Great video Jay. But I enjoy all you video's. Have a great prosperous New Year.

  • @EliahHoliday

The BSS E-Series you demoed reminds of the Paul Desmond sound. Seems like the perfect mouthpiece for cafe gigs where you'd want to limit projection but have a sweet and warm sound. The JJ Lakshmi reminded me of metal Otto Links, can't say at this point if I'd prefer it but it could probably easily replace a newer STM link (metal Otto Links seem to have variable quality in manufacturing these days) though you'll pay more for the craftmanship. Would like a comparison of a either a new STM Otto Link with a reface or a vintage Link against the Lakshmi. I too thought the JJ Hand Hammered was just an expensive gimmick of a mouthpiece but after listening to it here, my God what a beautiful tone! Prefer it over the Lakshmi, if I had the money I'd splurge on one for sure. Finally the BetterSax Burnin, I really liked the tone produced from this mouthpiece. It was warm and lush without loosing focus and also seemed to project quite well. I'd be curious to pair it with saxophones known for a more spread sound to see how it may balance. Also curious to hear the Burnin against vintage HR Otto Links and the 10mfan Classic MK2. For the price though I think it would be hard to find a better HR tenor mouthpiece than your Burnin. I hope to hear more examples of this mouthpiece played.

Just got my hands on an RCP 8 with the high baffle for power gigs, but that better sax mpc sounded great man. Dig the burner too, started on the tone edge, this one definitely has much more bounce and energy that you had to push for on the others in the Otto line.

Sorry, but i prefer really this warm, round, full and deep sound on the first.. the bettersax mp! Those are the ideal attributes of "tenor" sax sound. All others are close and sound magnificent, but i feel that for example the T. Wanne sounds a little bit to bright and reaches not this deep warm subtones that this instrument can give.
Excellent video as usual. Good 2023!

I just listened to the sound clips so I didn't know any difference in design, and I felt like the BetterSax and JodyJazz were very similar in terms of tonal variation when playing "soft" and "pushing it". Both had were dark when played soft, and when pushed became more focused and bright. Looking back it makes sense when Jay says they have some similar design features. Personally, I like a darker tone so the E series speaks to me more, but it's hard to pick because it does seem less versatile than the Burnin and JodyJazz ones. If I had to rank my favorites with sound being the primary factor and cost being the secondary, I would go 1. E series 2. BurninSax 3. JodyJazz 4. Theo Wanne. Personally the Lakshmi doesn't have a lush a subtone as the others, and is a bit brighter than I personally like. But I could be swayed with the BurninSax being #1 over the E series because of the tonal variety and price. Tough call

I must admit I haven't seen you play the sterling silver tenor before and having owned a King Eastlake Tenor for over 50 years I am sold on what the metal does to the tone. I have also become kind of a mouthpiece junkie in the last few years and it truly is nice to change up the sound by changing mouthpieces. I really enjoyed your take on the different mouthpieces and like you said that hand hammered number really does feel great while you are playing it. Thanks for your feedback and keep on testing.

I like the Burnin review, especially since I want to play warm like Lester Young. I’m a beginner, just a few months playing.
I see that Burnin Tenor mouthpiece 6* = 2.41mm, and that is the narrowest opening shown on your site for a Burnin for Tenor.
That seems a big step up from the Yamaha 4, 5 and 6C (1.70, 1.80 and 1.9 mm) that I’ve been playing. Why do you not offer a smaller tip opening for tenor?
    What do you recommend?

Hi Jay, I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on the Burnin Sax. I've been playing on a 6M Vintage 1948 Meyer for about 20 years and intermittently using a #5 NY Link. Both are very dark, which I like for playing ballads and such, however I would like a little brighter tone when playing uptempo stuff which makes your Burnin Sax MP the obvious choice. My question, should I move up to a 7* on the BS or stay with a 6*? Also, what does the star represent?

    • @bettersax
      @bettersax  Рік тому

You can move up to the 7* if you feel like you want to but you may need to go down in reed strength if you do. The * means that it’s a size between the numbers. So a 7 is smaller than 7*

Jay thanks for the video. I heard the BostonSaxShop E series right away, vintage jazz with an edge. Folks say fat sound, but I think of it more as a big hollow sound, like the bell swells bigger with this mpc.
I really liked the Burnin mpc for its versatility. I feel like on a versatile horn (like Ishimori new vintage tenor) it would be excellent. How "long" is the "window" of the mpc?
I find a shorter mpc window (like the very short window on a vintage Berg Larsen hard rubber 100, or short window on a JJazz HR* Custom Dark) is accommodated with a shorter reed vamp (like Vandoren JAVA), while a longer mpc window (like on a Brilhart Tonalin) is accommodated with a long reed vamp (like Roberto's Wind or Rigotti Gold Jazz). You are correct about the importance of trying different reeds with mpcs, but it is worth saying there seems to be a correlation with window length and reed vamp length.
So what is your window length on the Burnin mpc?

Fab piece even for a relative noob, with me finding easy notes from Bb up to high F# from the off and an amazing range of tones from warm cocoa to street bourbon. I would not part with it. However, at £280 it's not THAT cheap so I've bought into a more traditional Jody Jazz HR* that's £100 cheaper for my tenor. BTW Jay, the laquer on your bell seems to have faded badly. I would suggest a trip to Vigilante mouthpieces and do a video on her pieces. She did the hand work on the Guardalas and is making modern versions of those (and some with original blanks). Not cheap, but she has a good variety, although all metal and leaning toward the ‘bright’ side of things. But the Kansas City will play very quietly also and has a large chamber and moderate baffle so fairly bright when pushed, can be a quite rich ‘darker’ sound when lower levels. Just a thought.
I know I really liked your video of visiting KB Sax necks (and after trying some bought one).

Question for community or for BetterSax - Which mouthpieces and reed will allow me to play most silent? I have a problem with my mouthpiece that if I want to play as quiet as possible I cannot ... either i am playing with full potentional or it is squeeky... I know that it is mostly about my skill but which will help me with that (cause I decided that next to my old beautifull steel amati mouthpiece I will buy a new one...)

a soft reed alone will help u with softer and lower notes

    • @joshuamayo5282

this is more of an air support thing, low notes and quiet tones both require a lot of air but airspeed is key. if you want to play quiet then use very slow air but still take in a lot of air if that makes sense

Looks like Jody jazz is attempting to siphon a lil milk from Theo Wanne’s cash cow. After a while, it gets to the point where you’re really buying the same old mouthpiece at a higher price. When a mouthpiece gets into the $500 plus price point it should come with not only a ligature, but also include a neck😅. In my humble opinion a mouthpiece is either metal or hard rubber, bright or dark, free blowing or resistant and after that it’s all marketing. As Jay has said on many occasions, it’s not the gear, it’s the time you spend playing your instrument that’s going to have the biggest impact on your sound. A good player can make just about any mouthpiece or instrument sound terrific. Don’t get me wrong I have several Theo Wanne and Jody jazz mouthpieces and I enjoy them, but I’m an amateur and I sound equally amateurish on each of my mouthpieces and horns. If you’ve got the money to blow on gear go for it, but if you really want to improve your sound, you might be better off investing that money into lessons with a good teacher. I’ve invested into several of Jay Metcalf’s online courses and as a result all of my mouthpieces and horns are starting to sound much better😅😅😅😅.

A lot of people fall into the gear trap. I can understand an expensive horn if you plan to keep it nearly forever (and know it'll hold its value), but you can also still get top-tier used altos or tenors in the range of $2500 that will be more than enough for a lifetime of professional playing with good care.
I think I can understand hunting around for mouthpieces a little more, but personally, I think it's a bit much when people have more than 5 or 6--You can probably cover all the genres you have to play in that range. IMO--Sell the rest! :) It's also totally fine to avoid the hype new boutique mouthpieces like the ones in this video, $300 (when considering used) is way generous to find something that works for you.

If you have a high disposable income why not? Hell I'm a total amateur but love saxophone more than anything in the world....I got a top end Yani which I adore, is a joy to play daily and hope to one day pass it down to my child (hopefully one will dig saxophone!) when I have kids.

@@xxczerxx This is totally fine if you can handle it! This video is really hyping up new boutique mouthpieces, and I thought it would be good to mention in the comments that you can have a "pro" setup for an extremely reasonable amount, and that a $700 mouthpiece isn't going to be what makes or breaks you.
I just got an incredibly good deal on a S-WO10 and I'm in love with it :) But I would still be just as good (or bad) if I ended up with a vintage Yany or Yamaha horn instead. My alto is an A-901, and while it would be nice to have a newer horn and try out some different brands, I'm not lost in the chase!

Hello, can you come over to my youtube and comment on the sound of my saxophone - I really like your sound, I know you use smaller deviations and hard reeds - could you write me something - what could I improve - currently I use Theo Wanne M.A. - because it was the only one of this brand that sounded to me - more expensive models had a worse sound - what mouthpieces do you recommend? - in "blue bossa" I only added reverb (in others, the sound is natural, recorded with poor equipment) - the sax was renovated - the cushions are sticky and it's generally impossible to play it quickly, I don't improvise for now, because I want to work on sound and tuning - before the general renovation it was tuning perfectly, and now there are frighteningly large deviations of 10 to one side and the other - between the sounds.
