  • Beginning gardeners learn that carrots can tolerate shade, but I've noticed the opposite. Today I'll share a comparison between fall carrots grown in full sun and part shade and when I think part shade may be an option.

This will be my 3rd year of serious gardening in Zone 5. Over the years I have had miracle grow types of vegetable gardens, with some to mediocre results. Since switching over to an organic approach I am getting much better results.
I have found the more sun my carrots receive the better they do. Carrots interplanted with other crops and partially shaded really suffered.
I will be trying to incorporate perennial cover crops into my beds this year (thyme, oregano, purslane to name a few). Trying to establish living roots throughout the year to maintain the soil life. I love experimenting.
Just recently found your channel will enjoy exploring through your videos and will look forward to future ones.

when ever i plant something like carrots under a pepper plant i consider this bonus produce because I can not plant as densely and there may be comparison for nutrition I would be interested in a side by side if this was a note of how much pepper was produced and how much peppers would be produced independently (i don't have the space to give everything much room high-density and rotation is a main stay)
ie if the procured peppers off set the loss in carrots.
thank thank you for adding lots of info on how your particular climate could have affected your yields as well lots of testers do not include this :) great vidio

I planted carrots two years in a row in my shady raised bed, which has loose, very rich soil amended with lots of compost and alfalfa pellets, but it only gets about three hours of morning sun before a nearby tree shades it off for the rest of the day. I will not plant any more carrots there because the biggest of them were only about the size of my index finger and most were smaller than my pinky finger.
In that bed I got very little productivity out of most of what I planted, except several types of lettuce, some cucumbers, and snap peas. Everything I planted there was supposed to be shade tolerant, but the beets, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprouts in that bed gave me essentially no harvest.

I live in North West Georgia ... I planted carrots directly in the ground n they did not grow at all then I soaked another batch of seeds in a peroxide solution n froze then for 24 hours then planted in buckets ... when these started growing I was very happy ...

Cut those carrot tops before they die. I use them fresh in soup, and freeze some to use in sauces and soups in the summer. But, my favorite use is to make pesto with them. Wash, dry, remove any damage, chop them up in a food processor in olive oil, add the hard cheese of choice (Mancheco, Asiago are my favs. I don’t like Parmesan). Delicious pesto. I sometimes mix them in with basil for pesto, too.

I wonder if smaller carrots was effected mainly all by the shade or if the pepper plant may of drawn energy and stunted them to some extent. One end of my garden is 37 feet from the outside canopy of a huge red oak tree but still sap’s the end of my garden. I have often heard the roots only go out to the edge of the canopy but this is not true, some feeder roots go farther because I have dug them up with a sub soiler. One or the other or both definitely made a difference though with your carrots. Thanks for that comparison!

I wonder if peppers need 100% full sun?

    • @thebeginnersgarden

Yes, unless you live in a. very hot area where they can tolerate some afternoon shade to prevent sunscald.
