  • How to Walk Properly and Stop Shuffling as You Get Older-Proper walking technique with Dr. Todd Martin. Shuffling generally involves shortened strides with poor clearance of the swing leg, sometimes almost dragging. It will inevitably be accompanied by a stooped posture, pitched forward at the waist to some degree. The typical heel to toe placement and roll of the foot followed by heel lift and toe off are typically absent, replaced by a more flat-footed placement and lift off. Shuffling commonly occurs as people get older, especially in the presence of neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease. However, many people who are neurologically intact also develop some degree of shuffling as they get older. This can increase the risk of falls, reduce confidence in walking, and also result in back pain due to the poor posture that is associated.
In this video, I will describe what a typical shuffling gait is and the problems associated with it. I will also describe the faulty core movement pattern that creates a shuffling gait. Finally, I will describe some simple exercises you can do to help prevent or improve a shuffling gait. Because a shuffling gait can be an early sign of neurologic disease, if you or a loved one has been developing this type of shuffling gait, it would be wise to get checked out by your doctor for an evaluation. It may be more than poor posture.
