Glad this popped up on my front page. Keen to see it back in action.
My buddy has this exact same guitar that i refinished to wood for him. It was painted purple at some point but was originally red. It looks like someone did some extra routing underneath the pick guard of yours.
Id leave it as the wood finish base. Different for that model. Usually painted. Might siund different with out the paint coats on the body.
