Kanami’s solo is Magical. She truly is the Special One ❤️ Mike was on stage with Band-Maid during this song and when Kanami playin’ the solo part, Mike was kneeling down on front of her 🔥🤘❤️
There is video of Einziger performing live with the ladies in Tokyo, playing guitar with Kanami.
Totally agree with Itai, Kanami is incredible. It was her very brief but great solo that raised the song for me.
Absolutely loved your reaction and breakdown. Mesmerizing is the first thing that comes to mind. These young ladies are on a completely different level. Put 5 of the world’s greatest musicians in one band and what you get is PERFECTION. Again, thanks guys for an incredible reaction and thank you for supporting the Maids. The best is yet to come.
The 'Maids are special. Putting 5 of the world's greatest musicians together does not guarantee perfection or success. There are many examples in the past. These ladies are just on another level unachieved by most bands.

Great comments, guys! It's less a direction change for Band-Maid than the result of Mike's asking Akane where the milk was located at a US summer festival (yes, literally). Which later turned into dinner together, and then a collab. They only played a single show with Incubus in Tokyo, and I wouldn't be looking for many more shows with them, unless their tours cross paths. The music was _co-written_ by Mike: he came up with the riffs and Band-Maid fleshed it out in the way only Band-Maid can. I agree about the collabs being a good way to bring in more fans. Hope it works!
I learned a long time ago to give any new Band-Maid song about 20 listens before deciding whether I like it - and I always like it. This is just a warm hug of a song, and who doesn't want a warm hug by angelic maids? No worries, this is a one off - I do like your idea that this could get some folks interested, and then they'll find all of the other awesome material by the best band in the world.

The first time I heard BESTIE, I was, “meh.” The sixth time, I was, “eh?” When I saw the video, I was, “the world needs to see this.” It’s yet another BAND-MAID, song that grows on the more you hear it. But this time, it’s not because of the song’s disorienting complexity, but rather because of its surprising simplicity. BTE, 100% English, although written by a KOBATO thinking in Japanese, which gives it a special charm.
I think this is a one-off, with a tone determined by the collaboration, not a new direction for the band. But I’m hoping it garners them a new audience, whose grandchildren will be wearing BAND-MAID T-shirts 40 years from now.
[Bestie, co-written by Michael Einziger of Incubus.] MISA's playing and bass tone are setting new standards... and Akane's drumming is so in-the-pocket and distinguishable... and Kanami's solo is Daydreaming masterful! The recording and mix are as enjoyable as the song and beautiful MV! Miku’s English lyrics (I bet with Saiki and Mikey-chan's influence) are heartfelt. "I can't look into your eyes." Is Band-Maid a band of fashion-forward, trend-setting Besties? 💞 Thx, Mikey & Band-Maid!
FYI - The Maids just released a "Making of Bestie" on their websites where they explain the song and look of their awesome MV.
Also, Band-Maid and The Warning are co-headlining together on June 12th in Tokyo. Talk about a great cross-pollenization opportunity!

BAND-MAID can play whatever they want to play. I can't begin to count how many times I've said "that's different" about one of their songs.
After their tenth anniversary finale at Yokohama Arena they announced that we should look forward to collaborations with other artists. This is the first such product released. I'll be curious to see if they also do something with the Warning, and any additional collabs they have percolating behind the scenes.

It's not a new _direction_ It's their first collaboration (with a known artist, unlike the outsider written songs in their beginnings) and they are acknowledging that it's different. Saiki chose the costumes for the MV. The BTS movie dropped last night on their fanclub site, in it you'll see her fussing with the other member's costumes. The Maids are very careful about how they sound and how the appear. The same day this MV dropped they appeared in support of Incubus wearing their usuall battle gear. Thanks for the reaction!
Guys, I don't want Band Maid to turn into a crappy western band clone. Their skills, and talent should not be suppressed into to the simplistic music of western music, AKA dumbing down.
I don't think you understand how big their fan base actually is.
They not changing their costumes either.
Have more faith in their skills and artistic integrity. However large their fan base is currently, the band clearly wants more. As for these white outfits, Saiki has hinted that it is a trail balloon. Where it will go, if anywhere, is open.
We must be patient and wait as this phase of World Domination unfolds. I like what the gentleman said about crafting a Trojan horse to infiltrate the minds of all the world's citizens!

@@myindieprodentertainment In any case, it does have that late 90s feel of soft alt punk/grunge, like Collective Soul, The Wallflowers, Smashing Pumpkins, Live, etc. Right in Incubus' sweet spot

I thought of ‘23’ by The Warning but I could be wrong. It’s what immediately came to mind.
Without overthinking the lyrics, it reminds me of Blink 182's One More Time. From that perspective to me, both are songs written by the band, for the band, to the band. The only difference is that One More Time is very Blink-specific lyrically, and Bestie could be the type of song someone puts on a mix tape for someone they care about.
The closest original Band-Maid song in my opinion is Page, from the Conqueror album. The outfits in this video were designed by Saiki.
Hi Guys! I agree with pretty much everything you said with one exception. I don't see a comparison between this song and Nemophila's "Odyssey." I do believe that this song is a foray into Western music for a Western audience. With Nemophila, however, I don't think that was the case. They were commissioned to put together a song in a specific style for a specific movie. I think that was all there was to it - not a new direction for the band. While Band Maid is not my favorite band (although it is probably in my top 5), I have to say that there is something special about Kanami. Obviously, she's a great guitarist, and obviously she's a great composer and arranger. But that's not what makes her so special in my opinion. There's something child-like (not childish) about her - sort of an innocence about her. She may not be anything like that in real life, but that's the way she comes across in what we see in performances and interviews. She's definitely my favorite member Band Maid.

The reason we enjoyed japanese music because the complexity not western style
I know this song is very well done and I love Band Maid but this song just sounds too ordinary for me to be coming from Band Maid. I've listened to it a bunch of times and just can't get into it. I'm pretty hard core, I have all their music and the only video I don't have is the acoustic Christmas special online. I hope they don't put out a whole album like this or I'll feel the same way I felt when Asia (which was a huge success) put out their first album. My expectations were much, much higher given the talent of the band. Love the band, this is very well done but I've just never been into this type of music. I love ABOUT US for mellow stuff, or DAYDREAMING but this really doesn't do it for me. The bright spot is Kanami's solo which is great.
Ordinary by Band Maid standards. Still better than most current American pop rock. Their last collab was The Dragon Cries. Also disliked by many. Yet arguably lead to other similar but better songs.

I am glad that y'all enjoyed the song. Like others have commented, it took me a few listens to really appreciate it. I think the main thing that sold me on the song and performance is that Saiki's voice has such a soothing quality. I don't think the song indicates a change of direction, or even an intentional effort to reach a larger audience. After 10 years, they wanted to collaborate with some of the many artists that they have met over the years. This is the song that resulted from the Mike Einziger collaboration. This music video was released on May 1, the same day as the Band-Maid/Incubus concert. The Band-Maid/The Warning concert is in less than a month. Shall we see another music video released on June 12???
Very considered and intelligent comments regarding appealing to other audiences by way of more melodic songs and the change of dress. I've commented before on this- If they, and us fans, want world domination you have to do something about it, to appeal to a wider demographic. I feel that too many metal songs come at the expense of melody, which appeals more to a wider audience. On the subject of dress- a recent lady reactor stated clearly that she had previously stayed away from Band-Maid until now because she didn't like the idea of maid costumes, where as most younger ladies think that they are cute. If you have the confidence, compromise is a great weapon to have. Thanks for a great reaction again.
If they go for a new audience with songs like this, they won't be a hard rock band any more. As far as different genres ina concert it worked just fine here. There was a local promoter (Bill Graham) that did that all the time. But that was in the days when radio wasn't marketing to restricted very narrow genres.
Thank you as always for the appreciation and analysis. In this case, I suspect you are overthinking it. They have been experimental at every stage of their careers as a band, so there will always be new stuff and new styles. I do think they are strategically edging away from the maid outfits because they know the gimmick has served its purpose. They are simply a great rock band, maybe the best in the world, and the world is starting to realize it.
