When they walk out of the shed it makes me think of a scene in Darjeeling Limited. Very cinematic! ✨ Loved everything about this video ♥️ Thank you for making this content and sharing it.
The dedication reminds me of our maple syrup producers here in Canada. Long hours, hard work, only a short time of the year. Different types of candy can be made from the syrup but that is even more hard work. I too would love to try this some day.
I'm mesmerized by the rich golden shade of the final melon. It's beautiful in a purely visual sense no less than it looks delicious. Hopefully, the sugar melon tradition never dies out.
I was watching this with a friend and I mentioned he sounded like he was speaking some mandarin-French sounding dialect lol the intonation and the guttural sounds made me think of it
These look amazing and cute. I really appreciate and love to see things made by hand. Something about seeing the process done by a person is so satisfying. The product feels much more personal and special.
In sorsogon province philippines we called this Balikutsa. My grandmom was expert of making this delicious candy and i sell it to my school mates 25 years ago😊
Although the sugar melon before being topped with sesame seeds looks better than the final look, but maybe sesame seeds give more flavour to this candy Its looks so yummy, i hope i can try this one day I hope the grandpas stay healthy and be happy always ❤❤❤
These look amazing! They really do look like melons. I feel like for all that backbreaking work, 3 USD per kg and selling 75kg a day isn't enough for all of them. Repackage this with premium bougie packaging and they can definitely fetch for more, but definitely in the coastal cities. It's the online distributors who are making a killing in the online market while these guys wake up early everyday tsk tsk tsk
Not everything has to be about making as much money as possible. This type of thinking is why america has become such a capitalist hellscape. People thinking they deserve an extra 3 dollars cause they put a pretty wrapper on it. Also like to point out exchange rate says its19 yuan. So about 237 us dollars a day which be 1507.56 yuan a day. Thats a lot especially in a small town area. Only 9 workers to. As he pointed out to his son only makes 30$ in a whole year so he’s honestly making bank
@@zamiaramirez1390 it has to be about making as much money as possible because that's how the craft would survive. A lot of traditional crafts are dying because it provide either just enough or not enough for the craftsmen. This makes it hard for future generation to justify their effort in learning it. What's the point of learning something that won't help you survive for long? Meanwhile look at traditional crafts/recipes that managed to sell well in modern times. They survive.
Well... How do I say this... I like this video a lot!! The cinematography really hits it and the scoring is also great to listen. Good job, Goldthread!
At 3:20, when they're walking out the factory in slow mo w the candies in their hands, it should play that song from Nacho Libre when he buys those nice shoes and does that little step dance down the stairs in them, that "Bubble Gum" song
My mom used to make similar candy with the only difference is the shape. She didn't make it into that 'melon' but a long stick instead. Unfortunately, she passed away when I was a kid. Being the only person in the village who's able to make it, this candy is as good as extinct now. *the name of the candy she made literally translates as "pulled sugar", because of the process like you saw in the video.
So beautiful the way it's made. And it reminds me of when I used to make rice candy from molt rice malt a long time ago okay 20 plus years ago. I hope he does find somebody to continue his candy making you would be a pity to see end.
Hello my Chinese friend I'm Vietnamese from southern California city of Ontario. I would love to live in China someday in the future thank you for sharing your life story. Bye for now
Looks delishious and all that time, care and attention taken to make it would ensure t tasted amazing i,m sure,it,s like when something is cooked with love it always tastes better. Awesome vid, thanks for posting,I would love to try one of these sugar melons one day. Best wishes to you all, from, Auckland, New Zealand. 🧅⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍👍👍👍👍✅🙂🙂🙂😉😉sorry, the onion was the closest thing I could find that resembles a sugar melon🤣😅
Which candy-making process is most satisfying to watch🤩?
Our pick: The tiny “sugar melons” rolling on the conveyor belt.
I really enjoy the part where it's being pulled so evenly.
A skill that I hope continues 🙏. Everything is machine made these days ☹️
I like the cutting part. Somehow satisfying🙂
Stretching part, its so shiny
Ohh, I thought it was a fruit for real. Lol. 🤦 I would love to try one!! Yum!
This is one of the coolest, cutest candies ever. They really do look like little melons. I would love to try.

That's exactly what I had in mind (The burial scene from the darjeeling limited) when editing that part. Happy you noticed!
They looked badass walking out.

But maple syrup is a multi-million dollar industry. But these people make a lot less each day in comparison

I hope the gentleman is correct, I hope this candymaking process never dies!
Love the man's thoughts of keeping the craft going and willing to teach for free. Don't want culinary art like this to die away.
What I love is not just the craft of this edible artwork, buy also how determined the gongong is about passing this skill on.
Powdered millet tastes a lot like sweet peanut butter. I love it on mochi so I can only imagine this tastes good.
Appreciate the focus on the dog at the end.
The background music really fits.
I am glad you noticed, I spent a long time looking for it 🙌
I like listening to their dialect. The sweets look great too.
They’re actually just speaking Mandarin with a heavy accent of some kind.
@@Weeping-Angel no, this a kind of Jilu dialect, maybe Jinan. Totally unique and different from standard Mandarin
@@slerk9 yeah but I can still kinda understand that guy even with my poor mandarin skills.

The part where they all walk out from the shed with the candy logs looks so comical
Those look insanely delicious! This is the first time I've ever seen them!
This not only candy..it is work of art and passion. Hard work with love.
I want to try this candy so much. It's beautiful and the dedication to making it is beautiful.

This was beautifully filmed
Wonderful. Much love from India. Your Village looks just like our own!

I love people who value their ancestor's work. I hope this candy making never dies. Very hardworking people.
真佩服山东伯伯,纯手艺制作,希望在我有生之年能够吃一次。
外观还真像金瓜。
Thanks for sharing this. This is one good example of what Weifang City has to offer. We used to be a town known for enjoyable lifestyle.

Yep, and China is supposedly communist🤷♂️
$30 a day all year round... Not $30 a year.

The original makers of candy, marvellous!
They kinda look like pumpkins more. They are beautiful regardless!
I was just saying the same. Should've called them sugar pumpkins
This man's voice is so appealing he sound so friendly kind of like a radio DJ!

It's so cool that many places have a candy made by stretched melted hot sugar.
Wow,I was just there a few days ago. They did not allow us into the boiling candy hut though XD. Lucky you!!!😁
What dies it taste like. I want some.
I wish them good luck in passing the craft to new generation! I would love to try those candies they look awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Chinese 'douceur', I love. 🥳🥰🤩
Double thumbs up for the DoP the shots are beautiful
This is one of your best videos. Amazing
I like that they are made in different sizes, like real melons
So wholesome!! Reminds me of my grandpa. Cheering for him!

Real candy Artisans!
Love how there’s always an older guy off to the side with a cigarette
Loving the Wes Anderson vibes from 3:13 - 3:34 🙌
My favorite part

Dude needs to sell these himself online
Dog is hella cute

Thank you.......
That dog at the end is so cute, I just cant stand it.
I hope he is taken care of.
Truly amezing!
Nice video, nice music, nice translator
To me, they look a lot prettier without the sesame. They hide the beautiful melon bumps of the candy
I loved learning about this ❤️
I can just think of the lovely smell in that place. Like i oils stay in 24 hours over 24.
I gotta try one of these melon balls, it's malt candy! So it's gotta be good.
