    STORY
Join us on a captivating journey as we step inside the walls of a 700-year-old abandoned castle nestled in the heart of the French countryside.
Constructed in the 13th century under the watchful eye of the Lord of the District, this castle has a rich history of serving as a noble residence for most of its existence. For over 7 centuries, it was the epicenter of control for this region of France.
The castle boasts a remarkable medieval architectural style, featuring fortified walls and three iconic towers, two at the rear, and a front tower that showcases a grand staircase. Throughout the ages, this castle passed through the hands of various noble families and witnessed numerous conquests.
The castle's final owners, Oliver, a renowned composer, and his wife Claire, a talented dancer, were not bestowed with noble titles, but they were equally influential in their respective fields. Their shared love for the fine arts transformed the castle into a true masterpiece, with each room reflecting their passions in life.
After Claire's time, the castle became a place untouched by human presence, slowly succumbing to the ravages of time. Yet, even in its state of decay, the castle emanates a haunting beauty and an aura of enigmatic allure.
Our journey of discovery takes us into the heart of this forgotten relic of a bygone era, a place where history whispers through crumbling corridors and echoing chambers. Come, join us, and uncover the mysteries hidden within the silent walls of this ancient French castle.

This is absolutely fascinating. Olivier Messiaen was one of the great composers of the 20th century. His Turangalîla-Symphonie, a favourite of mine, is considered an innovative masterpiece. I first heard his work as a teenager, when I found a recording of his "Quatuor pour la fin du temps" in a record shop where I live in Canada. That work was composed when Messiaen was a prisoner of war in the German Stalag VIII-A. Messiaen was a pioneer of electronic music, and composed for the first practical electronic instrument, the Ondes Martenot. Much of his inspiration was drawn from birdsong, and his love of nature. The chateau belonged to the family of his first wife, Claire Delbos. Claire was herself a fine composer, and a highly regarded concert violinist. Unfortunately, she developed serious brain damage from a botched operation, suffered from total amnesia, and ultimately died in a mental institution. In your video, there is a large photograph of her on the wall, taken in happier times. Messiaen's orchestral suite "L'Ascension" was composed in the chateau, and a photograph exist showing Claire playing the violin in front of the chateau while Olivier sits on a folding chair and reads. I suspect the photo of the young boy, whose features strongly resemble Olivier's, is of their son Pascal. Notice that there are several tape recorders to be seen, and many reels of recording tape. These machines were still expensive at that time, and it was unusual to own more than one. This is because of Messiaen's fascination with bird songs. He collected recordings of bird songs everywhere he travelled, and the tapes you see in this video were probably some of these.

You guys were speaking about the rounded cabinets that fit in the corners. The reason you see this so much is because people believed that the devil could hide in the corners so they didn’t like rooms with 45 degree angles. If the room had to be built with corners, they would put things in the corners so evil couldn’t hide there.

It’s a particularly lovely castle. I love the shape, the towers, the stonework, the massive fireplace. Incredible treasures everywhere. You know, people will spend multi millions for a new built house in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. If l had that kind of money, I’d buy an ancient home or castle. One of the big problems is that you have to pay for repairs and taxes. What a dream to fix up and live in a medieval castle such as this beauty! Thank you gentleman.

Great work finding another amazing place to explore and inviting us to come along with you. You go to places that I will never get to go. I’m not able to drive anymore due to a progressive brain disease that has really limited my abilities to walk , to do even simple things that once were so easy for me to do. My memory seems to be getting worse especially after my last fall about 3 weeks ago when I fell backwards hitting my head on the corner of the cabinet I fell on. I’m on 2 blood thinners to try and keep me from having more strokes so I was bleeding so bad that I soaked my hair and gown in blood. When the ambulance EMTs rolled me in the nurse put me in a room right away. The fastest I’ve ever been seen in the ER! My neurologist has warned me that I have too many lesions in my brain to count and I was afraid I was going to die. They tell me to be careful and I let them know I’m not trying to fall but I get so dizzy when I turn around that I can’t always catch myself so I’m spending more time in the wheelchair. I get so bored but it really helps me to watch episodes of you and Danny exploring these places that I’d love to go to but can’t. Thank you for making it fun and entertaining. I love it when Lesley dresses up in the period attire and tells the history of each place and gives us an idea of what it was like living in that time frame. I’m living day to day and thanking God for each new day that I wake up again. I just turned 67 and used to be so active. I had to retire early and I’d much rather be healthy and still working. I’m learning to do what I can do and accept help with the things that used to be so easy for me to do. Sorry to be so long with my note but I wanted you both to see how important it is for you to keep exploring these beautiful places all over the world. I appreciate your work so much! Thank you❣️

The huge trees closing in saying it sat close to im guessing 20 years since property caretaker was on site.
The coal on the floor in the wine room was to be used in the small kitchen for the cook stove. The wood in the first room was only to begin the fire then the Coal was placed on top and the heat continues through the entire day allowing both to cook and keep the basement warm.
The large red french book was titled
    (my french understanding)
    "The Book of Esther"
its an excerpt from the Holy Bible old testament. She was a Queen in the middle East, and the holiday of Purim is in memory of her time and actions.
The "round discs" were not "tapes" but actually 8mm Film. Very rare method of making your own family movie.
Someone has removed the projector and screen otherwise you can play them and see the people as they walked around in life.
The black plastic movie camera seen after was "16mm" movie, and i believe is still somewhat available today but expensive. It was a kind of cassette inside if I remember. I used to have one when I was young but gave it away because I couldn't afford the film cartridges. The flash belonged to a 35mm photography camera which also has been removed and would date to 1964 65 as I have two just like it, one from Germany and the other from Japan. The player seen on the desk is actually a voice tape recorder and used back in the day for sending
"Live letters"; the sender would tell their story and introduce the children and guests and possibly sing and tell jokes. Send in the post to the relative to listen again and again and pretend they're together.

This is "Benoît castle", which is at Neussargues-Moissac, in the "Cantal" department. The composer's name is Olivier Messiaen.

Messiaen never owned this château. It was the country house of the Delbos family, Claire's father Victor Delbos was an eminent professor at the Sorbonne. Messiaen spent the summer of 1933 there working on some of his early works. Claire was a violinist not a dancer. There is some confusion in the narrative of the film, but much was interesting and revealing.

yes, first radio receivers were with one speaker, monophonic. late the music was recorded with two microphones, an stereophonic record and the radio receivers with an stereo amplifier and two speakers was able to reproduce the stereo signal recording. R and L stereophonic signal.

On a side note - decades ago Messien's "Turangalilla Symphony" was due to be played for the first time at the Sydney Opera house. The work calls for 7 players of an electronic instrument called the "Ondes Martenot." As no one in Australia could be found to play this instrument 7 players were lined up from Japan to play the 7 instruments. The day before a careless electrician led to the electricity supply to be cut off in the whole building and there was not time enough to restore the supply before the performance. Performance had to be cancelled. Don't know if the players had to be paid anyway!

Great video. The castle walls are just beautiful and in such good shape. Felix the Cat was the childrens book. This was a popular cartoon character in USA when I was a kid in the 60s. I remember some of the theme song: Felix the cat, the wonderful, wonderful cat. Whenever he gets into a fix he reaches into his bag of tricks. That's Felix, Felix the cat!

Incredible thank you for taking us. It is weird being in someone else's home when their possessions are still there. Why are their possessions still there, this woman died 8 years ago, shouldn't the gov't come and take the time and donate/sell them if there is no next of kin. Or is there legal problems not yet resolved? Items like that at least should be kept in storage in a safe place, those things have value the books, records, furniture, clothes etc.

Leslie: I just watched this 700 year old abandoned castle and you asked 44.36 what the crystal things that looked like dumbells were. They are knife rests, they are placed by the plate on the table and when you use the knife instead of putting it on the plate you put the blade on this knife rest. Also at 43.32 the books that you show are beautiful and some are very small. I don't know about Europe but in America the antique dealers would love to have them. We don't care what language they are in because people that build large homes with big book cases like to have books with beautiful leather abindings, that will show up in the bookcase. They don't care what the book says. That kind of book would be easy to sell especially in the South. Maybe someone could get the law changed so that the contents of the castle could be sold before it is all destroyed by the enviroment, and the money divided among the owners. I don't think we have any laws in the US about abandoned property. I'll be watching again tomorrow. Thanks for all you do. Bob Law

I am becoming addicted to these so intriguing videos of chateaux! Merci beaucoup! So, I believe the clear glass things that looked like a two handled door knobs were knife rests, as in maybe butter knife rests, for elegant table settings (so the table cloth wouldn't get dirty.) I saw reproduction glass knife rests for sale once in the now out-of-business Victorian Trading Company catalog.
