- We are on the verge of a scientific revolution in AI. But no one really knows, "Why AI Works". In this talk, we discuss the results of a 10-year research program to peer inside the details of AI models, and understand the emerging signatures of complexity in these models that look exactly like the same signatures seen in experimental measurements on real-world neurons...like our own brains This talk is based on my research, done in joint with UC Berkeley, developing a new theory of AI. My research has been published in top science journals like Nature Communications and JMLR (Journal of Machine Learning Research) and has been featured at top AI conferences including ICML, KDD, and NeurIPS. I am also a regular invited speaker at top universities like UC Berkeley and Stanford.
I have personally pioneered this research, funding it through my consulting practice. I have also developed a supporting open-source tool, weightwatcher, that has over 100 downloads and is widely used around the world to help build modern AI models. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Excellent talk - Allaying fears and putting AI into perspective as a co-pilot! Well done
I’d expect nothing less from Chuck. Excellent job. I’ve known Chuck for a few years and he’s always proven himself as a pioneer in the space. Looking forward to the next talk!
This is a great and insightful talk, going through the history of AI and how we built it, leading up to how the future will play out and what it means for us. At my company, we've been discussing this premise too, that AI will be emergent and convince us it is sentient long before it truly is - and that's almost more dangerous than true sentience. It's also helpful to think of the hallucinations as a feature rather than a bug, as they will evolve into what we know as the human attribute of imagination, while the AI's ability to reason cognitively and rationally evolves and improves in parallel.
Excellent presentation and thank you Charles!
I have been wanting to attend a Ted Talk and was excited to attend talks in Pleasanton. It was worth the drive from San Francisco! This talk was very engaging. I had no idea that AI has been around for 50 years. I like the analogy between AI learning and children. The other speakers were great too!
Ai safety research needs to drill down on fully understanding emergent properties
I agree with the other guy. There was a lot of fluffy big words, name dropping about credibility, but no technical content.
mhhh so many words an no content :D
