    Thanks, Joe. I know I asked you how to do this years ago and there was not a simple answer. But the worst part is that I couldn't find a comprehensive tutorial on it anywhere, including on THEIR website. It was kind of flying with no wings. So, this is MUCH appreciated. Now, since my "new" computer is 2.5 years old, I don't have the software anymore and will have to find it.

    Hi,
    I am wanting to use the new stand alone Capture one app that allows you to tether to an Ipad.
    After saving my tethered captures how can I use my X Rite colour checker to ensure accurate colours.
    A brief explanation would be most appreciated, thank you.

      through a TIFF workaround... Capture One is being slow AF to support DNG. Rawterapee supports DNG and is free... Don't even get me started on the 10 year old thread trying to get Capture One to fix the bug in their keystoning tool. I gave up on Capture One. I wanted to like it but man they really dropped the ball.

    34:45 In fact, if you hold ''Shift'' while clicking on the ''Open Image'' button, it changes to ''Open Object'' and it opens as a ''Smart Object''.
    That way, you can always go back into Camera Raw and make changes to the settings (by right-clicking on the layer and choose Edit Contents).

  • @awardwinningimagesexplained

    That is a great video. Thanks. I have however experienced that the x-rite camera profile is crushing details in reds & oranges (saturated colours become over saturated). Have you ever experienced that? I had to redo an entire studio flower arrangements shoot using Adobe standard profile to retain the details in flower petals

    • @buckerooni
      @buckerooni 2 роки тому +1

      yep! I see this on my canon 90D colorchecker profile, very noticable with skintones. From experiementing, I prefer the LrC 'adobe color' profile, using the 'warmest' colourchecker swatch. And for my studio work where I need to match colors including natural dyes, the key part is getting the white balance/exposure - which does seem more accurate with the white swatch (I always thought grey worked better!) and I can rely on the existing adobe color profile! LOL. soo, the color checker is an expensive white card to me!

    SRGB to lab? Think you need to change labs. So you are working in ProPhoto & then stripping all color info by converting to SRGB for the lab? Why? Do you not have the CMYK profile of the lab so you can at least soft proof?

It's now at the top of the development panel in basic, not down near calibration. Not X-Rite's problem, only stating it here in case anyone else runs into this.

    If you delete a profile after you have applied the color correction two images will those color corrections also disappear?

    • @pperry6715
      @pperry6715 7 років тому

      Why would they disappear? Do you mean in the JPEG or TIFF file, or in the RAW File?
      They're not applied directly to the RAW, so yes they would disappear as they're applied in post processing.
      They are already applied to the converted RAW file so, then you get the setting applied directly to the file.

    You don't need profiles for everything. I can understand why the South West would be different from New York State (which I _would_ do) but for most things it's not necessary. Pretty much everything else can be fixed with white balance. That includes seasonal variations due to the angle of the sun. I would apply the profile first and then correct with white balance. I do this every day.

    • @islanderiam1
      @islanderiam1 8 років тому

      +TheThirdMan After creating a color profile and applying that profile to your images, do you need to keep that profile in LightRoom in order to keep the color corrections? After several shoots wouldn't your profiles start to build up in Lightroom and get a little confusing to organize?

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 8 років тому +2

      Gil B You do but you only have to do it once or twice. This is my point. You don't need a profile for everything. You need one for daylight (summer) and daylight (winter) as well as one for tungsten and one for flash. If you travel overseas a profile would help too. That's about it. Everything else is easily corrected with white balance which doesn't have to be kept as a profile. Profiling just calibrates the camera. White balance sorts out the colorimetry of the light. You just take a shot of your white balance card or grey card and correct for all in ACR. If you have scenes shot in sunlight and in shade, you just take a white balance for each one of them.
      Profiling is very useful but doesn't have to be done very often. Just correct your daily variations with white balance. By the way; don't spend big on a white balance card. Just get a cheap one. They work just as well. Paying $50 for a brand name is just crazy. Better yet, use the one on the colorchecker.

    • @rsmith02
      @rsmith02 4 роки тому +1

      I would shoot the gray card in each room. If you have mixed lighting, shoot it to make the part you want to be neutral more neutral. Then if you have an incandescent in a corner it will look orange but your whole shot won't be changed just to deal with one light.

    So I am a wedding photographer that uses two cameras and have the ColorChecker. I am a little confused on how to use this is my work flow. At this point, it has mostly just sat in my bag. The issues is that I work in many different rooms that will have different lights, to match I may gel my lights to keep everything tungsten or whatever, I also use 4 to 6 lenses typically per wedding. Realistically, if I am shooting by the window where the bride is getting ready then move more into the room for Dad to come in, then move to a new location for portraits, followed by the groom getting ready .... I will have dozens of calibrations per wedding. Do I therefore need to create different color profiles for each shooting location with any lens that I am currently using? Do I have to save each profile permanently to the computer? From a workflow perspective this seems a bit of a nightmare.

    • @brucedeo1981
      @brucedeo1981 7 років тому +1

      You may propably colorcheck just 1-2 locations. Or have an assistant around, showing once in a while (every other room) the color checker and have a lot of calibrated combinations.
      i dont think however its the perfect solution for any fast changing situation. (reportage, weddings, etc)

      honestly? f this colorchecker whitebalance bullsh. do you like warm tones? go for warm tones. you like greenish tones? go for it. as Long as you dont produce Commercial work, you wont Need reproducable Colors

    • @rsmith02
      @rsmith02 4 роки тому +1

      Shoot generic profiles under daylight with no reflections and a cloudless sky. Then use those for your wedding if you like the look. If you have time use the gray card to nail white balance. The dress is probably good enough, though, and if you are shooting raw you can adjust white balance later.

    OK, Joe...I'm almost a believer, but help me understand how handle this situation and if the Passport system would help:
    I take a lot of panoramas of sunsets. My guess is, I would need to take a shot of Passport before I attempt my first pano set. But if I hold the Passport up, it will be in the shadows if it's facing the sunset. So...do I take the picture of the Passport in the shadows, or turn my back to the sunset and take the Passport image that way, with it lit by the sunset? Or would it make a difference? I'm guessing it would, but I can't be sure. Secondly, sunsets change quickly, so how often (if at all, should I re-shoot the Passport for a reference image for the next series of panos? Clearly, the light changes dramatically as we go from the golden hour (or before it) to the blue hour (or beyond that). How would you handle this situation?

    • @cryptomilkone
      @cryptomilkone 7 років тому +5

      You would use a profile you created in midday sunlight. If you would create a profile during sunrise it would neutralize the golden light out you got up so early for :-)

    • @Calibrite
      @Calibrite  5 років тому +1

      The best option would be to make a dual illuminate profile that includes the coolest shadow and the warmest tone in the scene. Then you'll have to decide where to set your white balance. But the dual illuminate profile will take care of the issue of multiple light sources with regard to the profile.

    Must you set your camera to a fixed white balance or is it OK to use auto white balance when shooting under similar lighting situations with the same profile?

    • @Calibrite
      @Calibrite  7 років тому

      Setting a custom white balance will always give you much better results compared to auto white balance.

    • @rsmith02
      @rsmith02 4 роки тому

      For fixed scenes, custom white balance is best. For dynamic I'd shoot auto and take a picture of the card under any tricky lighting to use later as reference.

    • @rsmith02

      No modern monitor is limited to sRGB. Profile it (i1Display Pro or similar) and you'll be able to get the most out of it. You won't be able to see all of ProPhoto but will see beyond sRGB most likely. Adobe Lightroom is also using ProPhoto with a different gamma behind the scenes.

    Why is the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport so expensive?

    • @Calibrite

      The ColorChecker Passport Photo offers you an unparalleled tool to attain full color control and customized creative enhancement from image capture to post-processing and is an essential component to attaining a 100% color-managed workflow. Each scientifically measured color patch is painted on and every pixel of the white balance card is 100% spectrally neutral. Shooting Raw provides greater flexibility to color-adjust images based on how a particular camera captures color. A calibrated Raw workflow minimizes color differences between cameras and lenses, adapts for mixed lighting, and makes it possible to color match across different scenes. ColorChecker Passport Photo makes the camera calibration experience fast and easy. You’ll have greater capability to edit color because you’re starting with a consistent foundation. Plus, you’ll be able to take advantage of your Raw processing software to automatically apply your profiles to a large number of images. The ColorChecker Passport Photo includes WHITE BALANCE TARGET. Starting with an accurate white balance ensures the colors you capture are true and provides a point of reference for post-shoot editing. The ColorChecker White Balance target is a spectrally flat target that provides a neutral reference point across different lighting conditions that you encounter during a photo shoot. Since the target reflects light equally across the visible spectrum, creating an in-camera custom white balance can properly compensate for varying lighting enabling the user to Eliminate color casts, Improve the color preview on your camera’s display so your histograms are more reliable and Make post production color editing faster and easier by eliminating the need to neutralize each image individually. CREATIVE ENHANCEMENT TARGET - The Enhancement Target provides a higher level of color creativity and control to your workflow. The Enhancement target includes four rows of color patches designed for image editing with just the click of an eyedropper. Whether it’s a studio shot, a colorful landscape or a multiple scene photo event, you can extend the power of your photo editing software in virtually any Raw processing software. CLASSIC TARGET - Photographing the industry standard ColorChecker Classic is an important step in attaining consistent, predictable color at capture. The ColorChecker Passport Photo includes a travel-sized version of the Classic 24 patch target. When combined with camera calibration software you can produce DNG profiles of your camera’s response to scene lighting to get consistent, predictable and repeatable results from image to image and camera to camera. Professional photographers rely on the ColorChecker to ensure color accuracy when editing their files and takes the guess work out of making sure their prints will match what they captured.

      That's a great money-making, corporatized response right there. The reality is these days, on almost any camera available on the market, you can take a white balance in-camera, on location, under any light. You can even (on most cameras) edit the curve before or after taking a reading. Hauling a color checker is a bit superfluous. And honestly, 47 minutes to explain this is a little over the top.

    Thank you. I'm confused about one thing. I read that even if you can't continually take a shot of the color checker it's better to use any profile created with a certain lens than none at all. So, I took a shot of the color checker at golden hour one night and then throughout my sunset photos I used my fold up grey card (which is easier for me since I need someone to hold my color checker) to keep getting the correct white balance. So my white balance looked great in my photos, but I then applied the color checker from that lens (taken at golden hour) and it automatically changed my white balance and it looked awful. I changed the white balance back to what I shot in camera but then the colors all looked really weird. What do I do in a case like this? If you could answer me I'd really appreciate it. I contacted customer service and was told to read the manual, but I can't find the answer and am spending a lot of time trying to find the answer in videos. Thank you!

      To create a generic profile I would shoot with your camera and chosen lens at midday on a cloudless day and get the card totally illuminated by sunlight (but angle so no parts are glaring). Save that as your generic profile and note which lens it was.
      For sunset photos just set white balance to daylight.

      rsmith02 thank you!! So, take that profile & apply the profile to my raw sunset photos & just set as daylight white balance? Will they still look warm? Hmm...

    I live in Goshen, and just stumbled upon your video, because I just invested in the X-rite i1 color calibrator and it came with the ColorChecker. Great video, and would love to meet up sometime. Search me on Facebook or the web under the same name. I'm a professional photographer and filmmaker. Thanks for the informative video, Joe.

    if your monitor does not produce the color space you are selecting then you are doing more harm than good...so if you want to work on adobe rgb for example, you need your monitor to fully support that.

    • @rsmith02
      @rsmith02 4 роки тому

      Not really true. Lightroom has used ProPhoto's gamut since 2006 despite none of us having a monitor able to support that. Profile the monitor and it will work well enough.

    I'm using a PC, and when I do the File - Export With Preset, then select 'Color Checker Passport', Lightroom is not allowing me to name the profile. It simply creates the profile, with the generic name "Profile" in the 'Profile' section of the 'Camera Calibration' tab. Can anyone help me with how to name the profile?
