Anu has turned subtitles bordering on gibberish into translations that are a pleasure to read. Ram Murali provided expert help with the songs. We are indebted to them both. Some little bit of the dialog was either muddled or used arcane Tamil and wasn't translated. Those lines appear in the subtitles as [...]. Most that come to this channel won't know Tamil, so make use of the fine subtitles and enjoy a fine film, the last directed in India by the American, Ellis Dungan.
The Encyclopedia Of Indian Cinema says this about the film:
One of the most popular Tamil films of the decade, continuing the post-Velaikkari (1949) engagement of top DMK personnel with cinema, scenarist Karunanidhi and star MGR. Shot near Salem in the hill resort of Yercaud, the film is based on an 8th-C. Tamil literary epic, a Buddhist text that, according to Mu. Varadarajan (1988), was a Buddhist propaganda work reflecting the rivalry between Buddhists and Jains in the 1st millenium AD. The original story, of which only 28 verses still exist, tells of a woman from the vaisya caste, a Jain by birth, who kills her husband when he tries to murder her, and is eventually converted to Buddhism. While using its historical and literary references mainly as an authenticating force, the film replaces the Jain context with the Brahmin caste in line with DMK policy. Parthiban (Natarajan), the son of an imbecilic king’s royal priest (Nambiar), is committed to the art of banditry while wearing a Batman-type mask to discredit Veeramohan (MGR), a loyal general and lover of Princess Jeeva (Shakuntala). The minister’s daughter is Amudavalli (Madhuri) who tries to reform the treacherous son,
marries but ends up killing him in self-defence. The nasty priest then kills her at the durbar. The songs proved enduring, esp. Vaarai...vaarai sung by Trichy Loganathan for Parthiban as he leads Amudavalli to a hilltop to kill her. It is also a landmark in playback singer T.M. Soundararajan’s long career. Master Subbaiah, the teenage prodigy who died young, sings a song and appears briefly as a cowherd. The film also launched the enduring image of the famous screen villain Nambiar. Madhuri Devi provides the best performance as a sword-wielding, independently minded heroine who kills her own husband.

This story is adopted from the great epics Kundalakesi. Screen play and dialog are penned by former chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mu. Karunanithi. That played vital role for the break through success of this film. He was paid more than heros in those days. Even today the dialogs are voiced by the people above 50 years. While I am speaking some dialogs, my grand sons are enjoying.

Hehe, I've been considering it all along. As for the South Indian films,
the subtitles are much worse than even the ones for the Hindi films and
I didn't think I should upload South Indian films without decent subs,
given that relatively few of the people watching movies in this channel
speak any South Indian languages. Fortunately, now I have a supremely
gifted subtitler in Anu, and can put that problem to rest. The other
main problem is that the South Indian (and Bengali) media companies and
MCNs (Multi-Channel Networks) are even more corrupt than are the
Hindi-language ones and for every upload I have to fight off phony
copyright claims and sometimes fraudulent refusals of those same
disputes and copyright strikes. As soon as I uploaded this film (and 2
songs from it in my songs channel), it was falsely claimed by crooks
intent on stealing the ad revenue, even though the film and its songs
have been out of copyright for over 10 years. I'm still trying to get
their sleazy greedy hands off of this video and it just takes so much of
my time. Never a dull moment here on UA-cam. Thank you for your

This movie has the story and dialogue written by none other than the late D M K Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, Sri M Karunanidhi. As such, English subtitles for the title cards are desirable for the vernacular language movies, wherever possible. Thank you for the big leap taken into the world of state languages cinema. A very warm and hearty welcome to the new horizon.
Actually, I thought seriously about asking Anu to provide English translations for the credits. But she had spent so long creating the dialog subtitles, I didn't have the heart to ask her to do more work on this very long and very wordy movie. Hers was a very labor-intensive effort. And she even corralled a second person to help with the song lyrics. Yep, lots more movies become available to work on if willing to include south Indian and Bengali films. I wanted to ask that; Are you going to consider restoring Indian films from the 60s and 70s at some time in future?
I only work on and upload public domain films. As I write this it means films released before 1961.
Okk. I asked the question because a ton of films from the 60s and 70s are very poorly "rEsToReD" by indian film distribution companies like Ultra and Shemaroo, Who always shift the aspect ratio to 16:9. Resulting in a version of the film that is unfaithful to the vision of their respective directors and cinematographers.

I first came across this movie title in the mid-seventies when I wanted to go into cinema line ....... supplying films to cinemas .. My attempt failed .. Success came when I attempted again couple of years later ..

The subtitles are selectable. To turn them on click on the 'CC' button at the bottom of the video. When turned on a red line appears below them. They're there. I just tested (again).

Too? I speak English and only English. That's why the subtitles on perhaps 90% of the films I upload.
