    What a beautiful solo by Don Thompson. I saw these guys play George's Spaghetti House on Dundas St in Toronto 1973-75 with the great flutist Moe Koffman and the amazing Terry Clarke on drums. Why did I assume every joint I ate in would have amazing musicians int it? I was spoiled! Great recording!

      Not only bass... If you haven't heard D.T. on vibes, you have some catching to do (before it's too late). If you haven't heard D.T. on piano, do the same thing. I've never got the chance to hear him playing drums but, apparently, he mastered that one too. I also heard that, after playing with Phil Dwyer for a while, D.T. picked up tenor sax and started working on it very seriously (and he is 76 already). Not to mention his teaching gigs in between. This guy is mega underrated genius.

      I agree that Don is, technically, a great bassist. But for some strange reason, he doesn’t bring a sensitivity to dynamics that, I think, a trio requires.

    Magistral guitarrista con un magistral contrabajista que lamentablemente dejo el bajo para tocar el piano (se habrá cansado de transportar el instrumento?)😊 está era la base rítmica de la orquesta de Rob MacConnell.

      @@ronaskew not sure about that. If the player rolls off all the high freq at the amp the engineer doesn’t have any options to put it back. You can’t boost what ain’t there.

      He has the last word because he records it as close to what he wants as is possible. So, if he paints himself into a corner, it is a comfy corner of choice and taste.

    • @floydturner2346
      @floydturner2346 3 роки тому +2

      @@steveburchfield5576 That's true; he used a Standel in the early days until it broke down. It couldn't be repaired because the circuits were of an unorthodox modular design. He used an orange Roland Cube 60 for a very long time, likely beginning in the mid-to-late '70s, until that wore out. He then used an Evans, which I saw him use in '97, but it never could give him his trademark warm sound.

      @John (grumpy ass) Fenner: Settle down there Sparky! The guitar *is* thrashed and it's beautiful. It's possibly the most iconic thrashed guitar in Canadian jazz history. Reggie's not being rude, he's making an accurate observation. Most of us who love Ed's playing enjoy knowing that his amazing tone comes from that wonderfully thrashed guitar. You're the only one being a Burkley Hunt round here mate! Now, sit down and apologize to poor friendly Reggie!

    • @sblack48
      @sblack48 3 роки тому

      It is trashed. Like Pat Metheny’s gibson or Wllie Nelson’s guitar, both of which were worn through. It’s just an accurate observation not a criticism

      @@errornosuchuser9196 Of course, you are quite right. I wouldn't want to upset anyone. Sorry all. But,!. It's a "cultivated" look !. Great care otherwise, being taken to ensure the instrument is set up properly and plays well.any Guitar "thrown" into the trunk of a car for years, would eventually be unplayable !. Fabulous playing !, but the Huitar is a deliberate "talking point". Kind Regards to All, Fenn.

      I've read for years he used 11's, but towards the end of his career, went down to 10's because time takes its toll. Like Bill Frisell, he was just a wizard of knowing exactly where to pick or pluck, and with exactly how much force. Most pros are pretty good at this, but some like Joe Pass are just playing so much that they can't give that kind of care to every note. Bickert is of the BIll Evans school, more interested in creating a mood with his touch.
