The Ranger Station MTB vacation house has been running for over a year. How has it done?

  • The Berm Peak Ranger Station has been in operation since June of 2021, and has hosted hundreds of mountain bikers from this audience. Let's take a look at how they have been enjoying the home, and what has changed here.
We start with some funny behind the scenes trash management. It seems like there's a simple solution, like getting a smaller can and putting a liner in it, but then families fill it up and call us. There are bears here so everything really needs to be in a container.

In my experience staying at various AirBnB/Holiday lets is that the vast majority of people actually do want to keep the place clean so that other people can enjoy it to the fullest extent, so I think it's really cool that you're putting facilities in place for that - many places I've been to don't have a vacuum or even a dustpan/brush

  • @johnbertram

Solve the trash problem by making a trash bag dispenser from a modified crankset/axle and chopped rear triangle from an old bike frame? Then bolt to the wall above the trash cans? It's a bit of fun and is sure to increase trash bag usage 😁

The vacuums, leaf blowers, cleaning supplies and other more useful items are always locked away in a closet or shed somewhere. I'm going to be here for a week, let us keep the place neat!

For the 3-d printer, with the printing issues, I would recommend to use a brim or a raft. A brim or a raft is something you can find in the slicer settings, and it overall helps the 3-d printed object stick to the bed, preventing the object from getting moved around.

A better way to handle the leaves is to mow them up into a bag. This mulches them finely and you can start a compost heap somewhere like behind the property. I did about 20 bags this fall and put them into a spot I want to grow cukes and sugar baby watermelons in next year. If you don't want to compost then this method allows you to fit a lot more leaves in a bag. You should get a large wood chipper, too, then you could make trails and paths from your onsite tree branches.

Seth trust me. Get a glass bed for your 3D printer and hairspray. It's EXTREMELY good for super small prints. You will never have your prints come unstuck from the bed and fail during a print ever again. Glass bed is cheap and fantastic for printing and spraying a light mist of hair spray on it and giving it a second to dry before printing ensures your prints stick great to the bed during the printing process and NO PRINT RESIDUE on your model afterwards like glue sticks. And the models pop right off the bed no problem after the print is finished and the bed cools down. No issues at all. You only need to apply the hair spray once every several prints as well. And it's as simple as using a little rubbing alcohol, windex, or any other cleaning solution with a paper towel/ rag to wipe it off. I'm not lying to you when I say I have not had a SINGLE print warp or lift from the bed or have any failed prints due to bed adhesion in over a year since I started doing this. It's the only way to print lol. It will change your life when it comes to 3D printing I'm telling you dude. Seriously don't waste anymore filament. Do it. Pro tip.

the leafblower is the perfect symbol for whats wrong these days... using electricity not to solve, but to displace a problem.... a rake works just as fine

It's one thing digging through your own trash, like digging through the week-old trash to find the missing tooth your 6-year-old wrapped in a napkin, and it just happened to get thrown away because you know digging through trash is going to be the easiest and most efficient way to avoid an all-out catastrophe at bedtime when there isn't a tooth to put under a pillow vs. digging through a week old trash that strangers made, I'm gagging with you Seth!

Just amazing, a breath taking experience, beautiful place, mountain biking in every inch, and a extremely warm and cozy attention from the owner, hope some day visit… although it’s seems impossible for me, I’m from Argentina, so well, dreams are free :)
