This tutorial series is absolute gold! Thanks. Wish I was confident enough to try all this. I was fooled into buying a 1987 Audi 80 1.8S b3 66kw with what I believe is the same k-jetronik as yours... Its not running well, not starting well, lacking acceleration, and idling all over the place. I live in Bosnia and mechanics here don't want to touch it even though the body and interior is nearly immaculate. Thanks for making this series so clear and concise and easy to follow.

I am about to install new injectors on my 380sl of 1983, and your video has been extremely helpful to understand way is important to check the play of the injector's seals. Thank you!

I would be interested in a video that explains the KE-Jetronic fuel accumulator. I can't really remember if you did one in the past or not? The different types that are out there, what happens if it fails and what maybe the consequences for the fuel delivery system when it's taken out from the equation. I will say from a personal experience that the car will work without a fuel accumulator however for the long run it will start ruining other parts in the fuel system.

For funsies, start with this video by Kent. It's a diaphragm and a big spring!

Also, start at the 8 minute mark of Kent's video, where he starts discussing accumulators:

The basics of "why" for the fuel pressure accumulator: it keeps the fuel in your injection system under pressure, and this is good for hot restarts. The increased pressure raises the boiling point. Early Bosch K/CIS (pre "-E") cars, you could drive them, get them hot, park them, then come back later and have trouble getting them started because the gasoline had turned into vapor inside the fuel lines. Known as "vapor lock." (Also a problem for suction fuel pumps on carburetted cars, etc.)
Early CIS cars had smaller accumulators, then had new, bigger ones retrofitted to fix that problem, new cars got bigger ones. Kent in the second video I linked, I believe he said they got smaller again when MBz went to the two pump concept.
Fuel pumps running create pressurized gas which goes into a chamber in the pressure accumulator, pushes against a diaphragm seal, and then, provided the seal is not old and dying, goes nowhere. The diaphragm moves against a sturdy spring and now, even if the engine is shut off, that spring pushing against the diaphragm creates pressure throughout the system.
(Uh... unless some of your injectors are dribbling! This all assumes no leaks upstream.)
I may have solved a hot restart problem on mine recently with the replacement of the accumulator. Or, I've got two to five other problems and that wasn't it, and am still on the diagnostic hunt! You know.... For now, I've got good starting, cold and hot.

Kent, have you ever used Hoppes 9 gun barrel cleaner to soak and clean injectors? I know the FAA recommends it for some recip aviation engines. I have had success with it myself on these KE injectors.

Hi Alex, I am familiar with the cleaner but have never tried it on injectors. I will give is a shot. Thanks for the tip. Kent
