  • In this video I will show you a time lapse build of the Maverick F5K Electric Glider from FlightPoint. F5K models are getting more and more popular due to their small size and excellent flight performance. Most of them are top notch full carbon designs that come at a pretty high price. The Maverick might not be able to fully compete with all of his carbon fiber brothers when it comes to performance, but it is an easy entry into F5K class competitions at a low price and is still providing very good performance. Even if you are not interested in competition flying, the Maverick is a good choice for hobby style thermal hunting.With its small size and low weight it is a perfect choice for your after work flights on the way back home or to be put in your backpack when hiking. With a 3 piece wing and detachable stabilizers it is really easy to transport. The Maverick comes as a kit with all the needed carbon rods and tubes, accessories like CNC machined control horns, screws, pull cord, crimping sleeves and a set of high quality laser cut balsa and plywood parts combined with a 1:1 size color printed plan. If you already have some experience with balsa builds you will certainly enjoy building the Maverick.

    Awesome build! I was just looking at this glider as my next. I was curious to know if you put anything over your plans when gluing the pieces down. I couldn’t tell in the video. Thanks!

      Thanks, great that you liked it! I can only recommend the Maverick. I fly it a lot and it really performs great. Watch out for my flight video which will come pretty soon. Concering your question: Yes, I cover the plan with standard cling film that is attached (and tensioned) with some strips of painter's tape.

    Its been 50 years since I last built an RC plane. Wish the kits back then were like this. The colour coded sections make it very clear. I have no inclination to get back into the hobby, but this video was very enjoyable to watch and would provide an excellent aid to anyone building the same kit.

      Thanks a lot! I built my first kit mid of the 80's, a Graupner Amigo II. Indeed a significant difference to our laser cut kit nowadays. I have learned everything back then from my father and these skills still come in handy even with high precision part in todays kits

    On my balsa build of the Triple Neo Thermic....I have experienced warping of the wings structure. I am using standard carpenter glue and appropriate weight to hold down the layers as the glue dries. is there a remedy for this warpage?

    • @bavarian_rc
      @bavarian_rc  6 місяців тому

      Hi Peter, on the Triple Neo Thermic I had no issues with warping. In which area is it? There is some chance of recovering the warping during the covering with film by shrinking the film differently strong in order to counteract the warping. Nevertheless you should not expect too much from that. If the warping is really bad you might have to consider removing the part that caused the warping and redo it. Was it caused by the sheeting or was it present before? Were the sheets already warped before glueing? in that case even after using weights and waiting for the glue to fully cure the forces in the sheeting will try to get back to the initial shape which could result in warping. Balsa is normally not so critical but plywood has more power.

    Fantastic video. The first (and only) model I ever built like this was very satisfying, but I certainly made a few mistakes.
    Would you classify this as an appropriate second model to build?
    It's exactly the size and type I would enjoy flying.

    • @bavarian_rc
      @bavarian_rc  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks, great that you liked it! There are some key elements for this build, like getting the fuse straight and not warping the control surfaces during covering with film. They require a bit of experience. I would rather say the Maverick is a 3rd than a 2nd model to build. But if you take my video as a guide and go carefully step by step, why not?

    Nice build ... to fix the plan on the table I use transparent adhesive film: easier, in 1 operation you protect the plan and it’s fixed on the table

      @@bavarian_rc Hmm, my reply didn't show up.
      So I have no tools and would really like to know what you are using? Could you list some please?
      Like: the pins, the weights, that sticky film you are putting on the parts, I saw the cool sander and will try for that one. Clamps, I suppose, they're pretty generic. I have nice scalpels and plastic triangles.
      Did you find a transparent adhesive film you like? In France amazon I saw a lot but would like to know what you came up with please? Some appeared to have a grid that might be helpful?
      It looks like you're working on a pressed wood board?
      What type of wood glue and CA glue please?
      I liked the music! LOL

      Perma-grit sanding block 140mm fine/coarse
      Perma-grit files set (fine) 140mm length
      Set of Standard files (large) from Pferd
      Woodglue (PVA): Ponal Express
      3 different CA glues: low, medium and high viscosity and activator spray... I use mainly EVERGLUE from Amazon (amzn.eu/d/034F9wJq) but any other brand will do (unless you work with EPP foam then you need to use special CA suitable for foam)
      R&G laminating epoxy (40min) (resin L with hardener L): www.r-g.de/art/100110
      For covering the plane I use either ORACOVER or ORALIGHT heat shrink film.
      For my custom decals I use standard vinyl from the hardware shop. A more professional solution would be ORACAL 751c
      For the transparent film (for covering the building board) I am still using my non-sticky one as I didn't have time to research further.

    I built this model last year, I am still trying to learn how to fly it correctly, I tend to fly it too slowly and find that I keep inducing a stall, when this happens near to the ground damage is caused, so I have had to make some repairs.

    • @bavarian_rc
      @bavarian_rc  7 місяців тому

      I am curious to see how it will fly. I will remember your comment for the first flights and be careful. Have you tried changing the CG and maybe also the angle of attack of the horizontal stabilizer? Both are connected and have a strong influence on the flight characteristics. If the thin fuselage is not perfectly straight your hstab could be a little bit off.
