    I like terraria's difficulty concept, where a harder difficulty gives more rewards, it makes it so that even after beating the game on easy mode, hard mode still feels like a new experience, along side that there are different classes (range, melee, summoner, mage), some being harder than others which also allows for a new experience every time

    • @bungercolumbus

      I loved how after you defeated a hard boss and felt 10 times more powerful with the items it gave you, you were opened the area towards an even bigger challenge. For example you defeated skeletron and now the dungeon has opened. You defeated the wall of flesh and the whole world has changed in difficulty becoming harder than before.

    I’d say one argument I see with games like Dark Souls and similar games is if you can beat one you can beat all of them which is not entirely the case. I remember beating Dark Souls 1 and then my friend gifted me Elden Ring and I thought it was gonna be a cake walk but the game showed me that definitely wasn’t the case. That’s what I love about those games there’s always something new to learn with each souls like game. Lies of P looks great but i know it’s gonna give me a run for my money when it finally releases!!

    I think it's important to say that getting over it does save progress, not in a save point way, but near the beginning Bennet even says that you can leave the game and come back and your progress will be saved, I feel like that's an important sentiment of the game

    Some games might not have a difficulty selection but add items or powers that might make the game easier for players and then everyone decides if they want to make their experience easier or challenge themselves while still playing the way the developers internet to. Elden Ring had spirit ashes which a lot of people complained made the game too easy so they just didn’t use them at all but some players had to use them to bring the skill ceiling down and enjoy the game

    In my opinion, games like getting over it and only up aren’t intended to be difficult, they’re intended to get the player angry. I’ve finished Elden ring and so called other “dark souls” games such as Jedi:Fallen order, and despite how many times I’ve died to bosses or combat encounters, I never get angry. Sure, I can get frustrated, annoyed, or depressed, but never pure, unadulterated rage or anger. I think this is because those games incentivise learning, and someone will eventually learn how to get used to the combat or a boss. Getting over it and only up are not these kinds of games, I believe that, instead, they were particularly designed to get the gamer angry. They offer no true way to improve at playing the game, and only reward endurance instead of learning. It’s for this reason that many have taken to inventing a whole new genre of game, called a “rage game”, in which getting over it and only up would fall.

    • @bricksflygood5949
      @bricksflygood5949 Рік тому +1

      Exactly!
      Plus in dark souls 1 the story in completely intertwined to difficulty.
      The world is dying and so you are pathetic and if you rage and give up and quit you hollow.
      The act man once said the importance of Firelink shrine and the bonfires is the harsher the desert the sweeter the oasis.
      Removing the difficulty would destroy the experience.

    • @GamePlayuh9510
      @GamePlayuh9510 9 місяців тому

      I think the anger argument is a little subjective. I broke a mouse once over my frustration at dark souls 3. Still love the game. And whilst playing Celeste, I was rarely ever upset. To this day, I'm not sure why. I certainly died enough times that I feel I should have been, but I just wasn't. As for Only Up and Getting Over it, I think there is some degree of learning required to pass the game. In the sense that you have to acclimate to the controls and learn the movements to get yourself further along. In that way, they're kinda like something akin to dark souls. I would also call them "streamer bait" instead of "rage games", but that's just me.

    As a disabled person who struggles to play video games and also has stomach problems that prevents me from being able to eat spicy foods, I LOVE that ending analogy, comparing difficulty to spice levels and game devs to chefs. If I see something on the menu that advertises how spicy it is, I'm just not going to order it- it wasn't made for me and I know I'd only be punishing myself for trying it. They didn't make it for people like me, they made it for the people willing to try it and that's the chef's/dev's prerogative. That's chill, it's a little sad sometimes but not everything is made for everyone. But when they do come with customization abilities (replacement ingredients, allergy warnings, mild options), I'm ecstatic! Accessibility options that devs implement intentionally make me feel like they want me to able to play and enjoy their games. Of course I think more games could benefit from optional accessibility features (like even just from a business point of view, disabled people are a whole extra demographic with money they'd be willing to spend lol, why wouldn't you add them?), but if not, then whatever, I have better things to do with my time and much more pressing things to be angry about.
    tldr: I'm a disabled noob so adjustable difficulty is a treat, but I think I'd be the idiot at this point if I bought a Dark Souls game and got angry at it for being difficult

    I wanna give a special mention to what I would consider the hardest difficulties I've ever attempted (I am sure there are more difficult challenges, but I haven't tried them)
    Nightmare Difficulty in Doom 2016, Realistic Difficulty in Call of Duty Black Ops 3 (not to be confused the Realism Difficulty in games like MW19), and LASO Difficulty in Halo 2. Unlike FromSoftware Games or Cuphead or genuinely challenging games, these difficulty settings were very clearly not intended by the developer and probably had very minimal play testing. If you have completed any of these games with such settings, you truly are one of the legends and have a ridiculous amount of patience, hats off to you.

    Hey Macro. I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and I had a great idea for a game you should do “for noobs”. The game is Omega Strikers. It’s a 3v3 anime air hockey game where you attempt to fight the other team and score to try to win. There are many characters including an introverted witch, a genji wannabe, a little girl with rockets and nukes (also voiced by the same person that voices Bangalore), and even a big hamster. But the most important thing I like, is that the team running it genuinely cares about their community and pushes out updates and balance patches around every 2 weeks, the most being 3 weeks, and the monetization isn’t through the roof as you can get highly valuable skins from around $9-$13. Let me know if you play it and tell me what you think! Btw, the game is also available on every platform with cross play and cross progression. ❤

    I was thinking of this the other day, games skill ceiling should not be lost, the game having meaningful playtime and potential things to do it's great. The game should be a fun experience for the player, learning meaningful things about the game is important.
    Said that there is a breach between people who grind those games and the truly casual fans, not saying casuals are bad, they can be the ones that help the community grow, they keep the community sane and good, but the rift between the hardcore player and casual it is becoming more broad with time. I do believe that without losing the skill ceiling and not holding the player hand, there should be an intended path for those players who are truly new to gaming in general.
    Edit: I think what I'm describing is the game just being balanced, the game can be challenging but given the tools the player can always manage within the game.

    I don’t understand why someone would subject themselves to play a game like only up when it’s movement is so shitty and the only appeal is that the devs didn’t include saving

    The thing about Pokémon games is yes I feel like they are getting easier but the players are also getting better so it’s going to feel easier

    This reminds me of when people were saying that if a game isn't made for everyone it shouldn't be a game, but if you know the game is too hard for you THEN GET ANOTHER GAME GOOFY ( btw i've beaten every from soft game so i'm kinda biased )
