Hey, that funny...'Cause... Eh... 'J' nique Nicole' in French... It's mean.. 'I'm fuck'n Nicol' .. So.. Well... Eh...I am so sorry. (and yes it's not a bad joke.)
I was 100% sure i was supposed to be a sad depressed and disturbed person while playing... I certainly was. This is definitely the only game while playing that I just audibly went "what the fuck man this is so fucked up". That feeling is at it's peak during route C. NieR replicant kind of replicated that feeling a tiny bit, but I never felt so bad for what was going on as like I did in Automata. It's mostly due to how the games pace the story and how suffering is exponentially raised in Automatas story as it goes, whereas replicants plateaus early in route B. Replicants is like a sudden flip of script like "oh no what have I done" when the narrative twists itself, and automatas is more like "please I just want someone to be happy!" As it aggressively gets sadder and more depressing. Yoko taro directs his games to be very disturbing and uncomfortable in general. Zero stabbing the shit out of 5, 9S stabbing the shit out of the 2B hologram, mentally I see those scenes as the same just with different meanings because of context. Then there's stuff like 5 getting cut in half vertically, Adam getting stabbed in the top of his skull with a broken sword. Yoko taro is really good at making hurting another being feel wrong and disturbing.
That's 100% how I always feel getting up in the morning. It's been a REALLY rough 12 months for me, and it really hurts, but.. that's about all I can describe it as.
@@trevorveillette8415 This just feels like a bias. Nier Replicant/Gestalt also had that progression of sadness you're talking about, just more subtle. Not saying it's a perfect game, but it's there.
Davi would love this game. Because of his understanding of music, and the way it makes the player feel so immersed in the game, he would really feel it.
The second voice is in fact a woman; J'Nique Nicole! I recently had the honor of hearing her and Emi Evans, the first vocalist, perform this live with orchestra and man. Beautiful Song is a strong understatement. It's so much more intense and emotional in person. Loving these NieR videos!
That concert was absolutely beautiful and I was legit crying on certain pieces and this was one of them. Such a wonderful privilege to have seen them perform live
So, before the game came out, Square Enix released a gameplay trailer of this fight with this song playing in the background. That trailer and music alone convinced me to buy Nier: Automata and I never regretted it. This fight is still my favorite part in the whole game.
The Sound of the End is my favourite track. The dynamic version has that real ‘I’m going to kick your f***ing ass!’ feel. Yet they take that exact same tune for the quiet version and it has that feeling of absolute defeat (noteable playing at key moments during Route C). It truly is the ‘sound of the end’, whether that be an epic final battle, or a tragic defeat.
I'll explain the context around the character and the song, but before I do that: I very much recommend doing Shadowlord from NieR Replicant. Now: This song plays in the battle against a bot named Simone. Its full name is Simone De'Bouvoire, named literally after the French Feminist Philosopher. The bot's character is a half-corruption of the actual person. In love with another bot, who is taking after Jean Paul Sartre, Simone De'Bourvoire's real world lover, she's trying to be noticed to gain his affection. This is because, like the real life version, Sartre had many, many girlfriends. So, in order to gain his affection she starts consuming the bodies of Yorha androids and using them to rebuild and remodel herself. This is the corruption of the identity, as the real-life Simone instead fell further and further into misandry, projecting out all the flaws she saw in Sartre onto men in general. In both cases, Simone is an incredibly miserable character. It is important to note: most characters in NieR Automata take directly from some aspect of philosophy, but, the game itself doesn't make a commentary on it. Rather, the plot is a commentary on the human condition and how people search for meaning in their lives. The different tracks fall into these categories of meaning or, in one's case, the lack thereof. That track is helpfully given the subtitle of "despair".
The machine's name is Beauvoir. As in Simone Beauvoir, famous french philosopher. They lament the lack of affection from their beloved, another robot by the name of Jean Paul. As in Jean Paul Sartre, famous french philosopher. The real Jean Paul and Beauvoir were in a relationship, of sorts, and appear to have ghost-written for many of each other's works (so hearing her take on a male voice in the mix is no accident), but it seemed Sartre had a different idea of what their relationship meant than Simone. This is reflected with their machines.
Fun fact, as a French, the robot's name, in our subtitles, is Simone :) Playing the game with Japanese voices, you just taught me its name is Beauvoir in English. Maybe it is Simone in French to keep a layer of mystery about the character since Beauvoir would be terribly obvious for French people ^^
@@ManiakGrikI’m honestly not sure where the poster you’re replying to got Beauvoir as the name of this boss. The boss is also named Simone in the english translation as well.
About happiness and sadness: it runs deep in Nier. Weight of the World - the conclusive piece to the game that I'd recommend reacting to last - is one of the saddest songs I've heard, and it's purely, exclusively in major.
Without getting too much into the plot, the main characters are all machines trying to find their version of happiness. It explicitly says happiness can be sadness and vice versa - and violence can be expressing joy etc, because the characters have no basis for identity that a human would. As a big fan of nier automata. I approve of your comment. Also I might add. The song specially the weight of the world is also a very hopefully song especially. She just "a normal girl" (like we are just a normal guy) and we are all holding a little bit of the weight of the world.
So glad you reviewed this. This is by FAR my favorite soundtrack in Nier Automata and I had the pleasure of watching this live and the orchestra absolutely killed it, props to Emi Evans and J'nique Nicole for going so well together!
The song describes a boss who is being fought by the player, she was abandoned by her partner, she kept saying I'm beautiful, I'm beautiful, honestly when I fought her I cried, but she had to be killed to continue the game
I still remember this from E3 2016 showing the boss battle. The combat, the music, the mechanics, all happening in real time in the game. Reminded me of metroid prime.
I was also lucky enough to see them perform this in the Nier concert this year. As soon as this started up, the entire audience lost their minds. EVERYONE was waiting for it!
So, this theme is actually the second boss from Automata, if I remember correctly. You fight the boss at the end of the Amusement Park. And somehow, despite only hearing the music, you are able to capture the gist of the story. Fun to listen to your reaction as always. I highly recommend reacting to The Final Combat from Darkest Dungeon.
5th or 6th actually, you go to the desert and get "this can not continue" first. pretty sure it's Marx, Engels, Goliath Tank Desert, Adam, Goliath Tank Amusement Park, and then her, being Beauvoir.
@alexv1154 Ah, I thought you had gone to the park before the desert. Also forgot about the tanks and Marx being separate from Engels. It has been a few years since I've played it.
It's like an opera song. A cool thing about Automatas songs is that they use a sorta made up language I think was called "chaos" language or something. But basically it's several languages meshing together like it's something that will inevitably happen in the future. I love the nier soundtrack. Hope you look at The dark colossus which was in Nier Replicant and it was remixed for Automata.
The whole thing feels very "tribal." Having grown up in Alaska, among the many tribal groups there, it feels quite familiar. The strong underlying rhythm is VERY tribalistic, along with the changing of the emotional content. With much of the music I heard from my friends growing up, the understanding of the songs THEY grew up with, is very strongly based on the re-telling of old adventures -- whether the stories being told are of victories, or failures. When I think of the old term "bard," I often connect it in a newer way, to the hearing of those historical chants, that keep the old stories in the forefront of the lives of the newer generations. That's what THIS music feels like, to me...a warning, to be sure...that could be good or bad...depending on where the "player" is coming from. Regarding the singing ranges ... for most of my life (from the time when I was barely school-age in the early 50s, until 2006) I had just under a 6-octave range. In choirs, I often was asked to "run (teach) the parts" for all of the different songs we sang, because I could sing them all. By 2006, rheumatoid arthritis had gotten hold of me very strongly, and I was bent far, far forward, with my knees bent as if I was sitting, and my hips bringing my torso way forward--leaving me not much breathing room. For over nine years, I was no longer able to sing ABOVE a low tenor range, and was mostly confined to baritone and bass. In 2017, both of my hip joints were replaced, and now (at age 74) I am able to stand and sit upright again, and have been working on getting at LEAST back up into a 2nd soprano range. I have officially reached that again, and am now working at getting my highest register back into play. I can STILL sing bass. If you listen to Geoff Castellucci sing (with VoicePlay) "Sleeping in the Cold Below," I can sing and sustain the lowest note he sings in that song. I can HIT, but not sustain Tim Foust's lowest note in his range (A-0). So...yes...that solo in the game could DEFINITELY be either a man with a high range, or a woman with a low range. There are MANY people who can make that crossover and still carry the "quality" of the original placement along with the crossover -- your brother being one of them, of course. 😀 THANK YOU very much for this very interesting reaction to this fantastic sampling of NIER background music!
@@igrazm2437 Thank you! We have six children all together, in our "Yours, Mine, and Ours" family. Through them and their spouses, we have 22 grandchildren, who have also given us (so far) five great-grandchildren. 😀
@@DaviVasc Simple Answer? Play Nier Automata since its the best Standalone experience. Long Answer? Technically the series started with the Drakengard games and Nier is a continuation of the final ending in Drakengard 1, but not only are they rough gameplay wise but also have some really twisted themes that may not leave a good impression of the fact its all very story rich. There is also the previous Nier game Replicant (or Gestalt in the US) which got a remaster after Automata, but its still a lot grindier to get through and reach the "true" ending. Speaking of Drakengard, there are some real bangers in that game aswell since its the same composer as the Nier series but they used a lot more Guitar in it. Highly recommend "Two's Song" as a prime example of it.
@@DaviVasc Nier Replicant or Gestalt is the first of the Nier series. There is a remastered version available for this called NieR Replicant ver. 1.2274487139. I would suggest starting from there for story and writing reasons. Nier Automata is the most popular game of the series, but it is the second game. It is fairly standalone, so it's possible to start here instead. There were be allusions to the first game, but if you don't know them it won't harm your experience. Nier itself is linked with the Drakengard series, but it isn't necessary to play those to understand Nier.
I agree with starting with Nier Automata. Technically the games in the series are connected but you really don't need the whole context to enjoy any individual title. The game does a pretty good job of explaining sufficient back story to make perfect sense. The only thing you'd miss is historical lore, and I do mean historic, like things that happened thousands of years before the game starts. To get the whole lore anyway you'd have to diverge out into companion media like mangas/novellas/audio books/stage plays etc. which is a big stretch.
What I've always felt about the opera boss and her theme is all about obsession, she is chasing after her former glory and recognition, never ending suffering from loss of who she was, who she though she was, and something she'll never be the thing she wants again. So she finds joy in the agony of others, it feels like she's the doll playing with the agony of others, absolutely dreadful. It's her decadence that makes her a monster, the themes about her and how she became what she is when you fight her, how utterly terrifying she is for 2B and 9S to face her and hurt the androids, you can't help but feel pity and despair to free them from her, angry and helpless that the only thing you can do now is destroy the opera singer and end their suffering. I always break when I hear this song, it's so powerful ! And it's an optional boss if I remember correctly !
Indeed. I approve of your comment. Im a big fan of nier automata. Also what you did write makes it even more special. If you think about that the game narates this human concept and gives you the chanche thinking about the meaning of life. And this makes it very special to me at least. Not only depressing. But. Also just to find meaning in life. Which almost all important characters in the game try to find. Or found it.
1:10 I know there are really no "lyrics" to this series' music. But just listen really close A rough: Translation, or at least what I hear.) MY heart of sin. It sings a song. It sings a song of heartache.
@@kazemitsuki3325 I've been hearing that for years. There's another part that sounds Italian, during j'nique's segment. I can't remember what it was, but I believe the phrase translated was something about a pain in their heart. I really wish I could remember it properly. :(
Another amazing breakdown of Nier's song! Can't wait for you to describe Weight of the World (End of YoRHa version), also from Nier: Automata :) I particulary love that song. Thanks Davi!
This song was the first thing I ever saw or better heard of NieR and it catched my interest immediately. Since then I'm im love with the NieR games. Hope you'll listen to the "Shadow Lord" one day.
Davi is finally at the "Nier OST" level from every game music channel analysis. I love when they reach that level by the way. Always a good listen and analysis and makes me love even more this game. PLZ CONTINUE!!!
Whole Nier OST is dynamic, almost every track has 3 states: calm for exploring the world, average when something story happens, but still calm and last state that plays during the action. It smoothly transitions from one to another, depending on the situation. If you search the OST for this game, you can find each state tracks separately, or their compilation in a single one. Oh, there is 1 more 8-bit version (for hacking process) But this specific track is only 1 state (and 8-bit)
Holy shit I've been watching you for a while and I never realized you never reacted to more NieR music. Automata and Replicant are my favorite games, and the whole OST is godly. I hope you react to Shadowlord from NieR Replicant or NieR Gestalt one day (each game has a different version of that song that are both superb) and Fleeting Words from Replicant, you'd love them Cheers lad
I really like how much about the game and it's themes you can deduce just from the music. It is indeed very much a lament. And a boss fight, at the same time.
Other songs from nier automata I really reccomend are vague hope, wretched weaponry and bipolar nightmare. Also Weight of the world tho that one has actual lyrics so it is less harder to analyze
Davi you gotta review the Leviathan boss battle from the FF16 DLC. Soken adapted the Leviathan theme from 14 and used that one unreleased trailer track that everyone loved and it’s awesome.
Love your reactions and breakdowns! If you want more interesting and heartbreaking Nier songs to listen to I recommend Possessed by a Disease, Vague Hope, and Weight of the World (there are multiple versions of Weight of the World and all are top tier)
Amazing analysis, you managed to get the concept, behind this music piece, without having no game knowledge; impressive as always. Now, maybe you want to get into Sound of the End, for a more crushing composition, by far, the most emotionally intense piece.
You should really play the game (or nlisten to the song in a gameplay segment)! In game itself it is even more epic because of some game effect in that specific situation, there's this one moment where they do something with this song that gives me chills every time!
A beautiful song is absolutely amazing definitely one of the best tracks ever. The only song i like just a bit more in my opinion is Shadowlord from Nier the first game or Nier Replicant. But anyways thank you for doing this piece i love it and i hope you have a great day Davi Vasc.
This is one of my favourite track of nier automata just after grandma destruction (which has an interesting link to grandma from nier replicant, may be something you could explore in a video?) anyway thank you very much, this is by far the most interesting reaction channel!
Is that a Xenogears CD there on the background? Man that is one of my favorite games of all time and it has some of the greatest music ever. You should do a video on Flight.
Hi! Suggestion: Rostros Ausentes from Blasphemous 2. Video: So you finally listen to the most suggested track from Nier! I remember you explaining in a stream you gonna leave the most hyped track for the end. I'm happy for the Nier fans who have received three analysis (if the Miracle wants it Blasphemous will have a similar fate some day, but 'Caprichosos son los caminos del Milagro'). And yeah, the track is super epic and the second voice very cool. Cool track, it doesn't give me that feeling of beauty, but I guess the title is due to game's context. That's it! ¡Adiós Davi!
I think one thing he sadly miss was also watching the battle. Because part of the performance was seeing how Simon's attacks and movements harmonizes with the music.
"it seems like they're always playing with happiness and sadness" my friend, you have no idea how correct you are. anyway I liked this video a lot, it was neat hearing your perspective! I hope you listen to more from both nier soundtracks!
This is one of my favorite songs from Nier. So beautiful and epic. I would love for you to react to the Dancing Mad from Final Fantasy 6 but the Distant World version. I just listened to it and it is so epic.
Hey Mr Vasc I just wanna know how ur doing cuz i found u through all ur hollow knight videos through which i grew a big liking of u. Ever since then I've peeked on ur channel sometimes and i just overall hope that you're doing good cuz i think you have awesome insight and awesome personality :)
Hey Davi. I've stumbled upon your OST reaction and breakdown videos recently, been a bigfan since. Would you be willing to listen to some Persona 3 Reload OST? It's a game that has come out recently and it has some really cool banger songs, but also some tracks that seem to me (as a musically ignorant person) to be really impactful and meaningful, like "Battle Hymn of the Soul" or "Living with determination" and "Living With Determination -Iwatodai Dorm Arrange-" or almost any other track from that game. Would be really glad to hear you react to them and maybe break down why they feel that way? Anyway, really like your videos, cheers :)
I think Replicant music > Automata music, but Automata music + gameplay + autmosphere > Replicant's. Secondary quests in Replicant are such a barefaced grind... In Automata I got at least intresting theme of robots trying to copy|be humans as a reward of quests. I hope in Replicant it will change (whom am I lying to?) as I continue to play.
Man you really need to check out Apotheosis from journey, its by Austin Wintory and its just amazing. Journey is a niche game to know nowadays, especially sense its a walking sim to most. but hell its a walkin sim that made me CRY
Thank you very much for your analysis of Nier's music, this and many others that this game has are a pleasure to listen to... that's why I ask you please if you can listen to Emil's music, it is very good and beautiful to listen to :)
yoko taro knows how to break a man not just once but multiple times. Hope davi reacts to slave knight gael from dark souls 3 i really am looking for it
All people reacting to this song think the deeper voice is a male, why? I, with no music knowledge at all, instantly heard it was a black woman. Its such a recognizable kind of voice to me. Oh, and this song isnt from the first Nier, its from Nier Automata, that should be changed in the infos.
I had to take a break after hearing the Pascal Villages theme. I knew nothing good would happen to that village and I didn't want to imagine what could happen to that little robot waving the white flag. I should have stopped playing the game.....

THANK YOU very much for this very interesting reaction to this fantastic sampling of NIER background music!
Thanks for commenting, your life is such an interesting story! If you have grandchildren, I know they're very lucky^^
@@igrazm2437 Thank you! We have six children all together, in our "Yours, Mine, and Ours" family. Through them and their spouses, we have 22 grandchildren, who have also given us (so far) five great-grandchildren. 😀
Please- play Nier automata, Davi! I'll definitely watch you play this awesome game!
I'm definitely going to stream it at some point! Which game should I start with? I don't know anything about the series
Nier is the series automata is one of the games in the series. I think it is also the most popular game in the series.
But just listen really close
A rough: Translation, or at least what I hear.)
MY heart of sin.
It sings a song.
It sings a song of heartache.
I can't unhear it now haha
@@kazemitsuki3325 I've been hearing that for years. There's another part that sounds Italian, during j'nique's segment. I can't remember what it was, but I believe the phrase translated was something about a pain in their heart. I really wish I could remember it properly. :(
@@tickledpickle5671 hm, you're thinking about that line that sounds like "fa male qui nel cuore" that means "it hurts here in the heart"
@@lourensss4692 That's it! I knew it was something about hurting in my heart, but I couldn't remember 100% what it was. Nice catch!
Another amazing breakdown of Nier's song! Can't wait for you to describe Weight of the World (End of YoRHa version), also from Nier: Automata :) I particulary love that song. Thanks Davi!
wow that second solo legitimately made me cry, it conveyed so much raw emotion it was overwhelming. that singer is so incredibly talented.
I’ve been looking forward to you falling down the Nier rabbit hole (in a good way)
I'm so glad your going over nier automata. By FAR one of my favorite games of all time. The ost is so amazing. Love the vids keep up the hard work.
Oh, there is 1 more 8-bit version (for hacking process)
But this specific track is only 1 state (and 8-bit)
Holy shit I've been watching you for a while and I never realized you never reacted to more NieR music. Automata and Replicant are my favorite games, and the whole OST is godly.
I hope you react to Shadowlord from NieR Replicant or NieR Gestalt one day (each game has a different version of that song that are both superb) and Fleeting Words from Replicant, you'd love them
Cheers lad
🤣the end part.
Awesome analysis, fr!
In game itself it is even more epic because of some game effect in that specific situation, there's this one moment where they do something with this song that gives me chills every time!
your thoughts r hitting the right notes! id love to watch u play the games n see your experience m8
This is i think my favorite track of this OST
Is that a Xenogears CD there on the background? Man that is one of my favorite games of all time and it has some of the greatest music ever. You should do a video on Flight.
Завидую такой способности анализировать на слух. Люблю смотреть твои разборы.👍
Def my favorite boss fight of the game. From the music to the boss itself, everything just hits
FINALLY! I've been waiting for this tyyyyyyyyyyy
I suggest Blasphemous 2's soundtrack called 'Clavada' by Carlos Viola!
Easily one of my fave songs in the OST and definitely a great boss. I would highly recommend trying NieR games out
Emil -Despair is another great one from neir IMO
Hi Davi. I always like your explanation of the music.
This song is really beautiful, indeed!
Thinking about replaying Nier:Automata just for experiencing this soundtrack in game again :D
Me every second of playing Nier Automota "god this is so much more epic than i expected"
Very cool analysis 😊
Dovi finally laying hands on the best nier automata song
One of the rare games with a perfect ost. On par with OoT and sotc.
Awesome Davi
I love when people are excited and enthusiastic... about anything at all, lol. Davi's feeling are super contagious!
edit: 1:40 So cute!
A beautiful dramatic song
Essa quinta série no finalzinho do vídeo, socorro, hahahahah!
Would love for you to react to "The Greatest Jubilee" from Bayonetta. It's one of the most intense final boss tracks I've ever heard.
if you like nier music I think you should see shadowlord, fleeting words or one of the emile variant
You should just play it and get ending E with closing credits one of its kind.
The song that made me play the game
You need to do a vid on "Bury the light" ngl. Amazing song
yoko taro knows how to break a man not just once but multiple times. Hope davi reacts to slave knight gael from dark souls 3 i really am looking for it
Recommendation:
Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty OST - Phantom Liberty
Great analysis!
* Bro I went to youtube and seen new Minecraft 1.21 soundtrack...
I played and finished nier Automata, and the game in one word is depressing. It is an incredibly sad game.
Listen to the track "shadowlord" from nier replicant, please. Actually, I'm glad you liked the music from nier.
I still hear "ahahahahaha" and "no no no NO!" Then i remember Nines run and get sadder. Someone please look my way.
If you get a chance to check out shadowlord I know you will fall in love with how its composed
You should react to Heathcliff, the Heartbroken's theme from limbus company
I don't understand how people can hear J'nique Nicole's voice and immediately think "man"..
Anyway great analysis, this song bangs
All people reacting to this song think the deeper voice is a male, why? I, with no music knowledge at all, instantly heard it was a black woman. Its such a recognizable kind of voice to me.
Oh, and this song isnt from the first Nier, its from Nier Automata, that should be changed in the infos.
To break a bit from epicness NieR has, can you analyze Fortress of lies or Significance? Those are very different from this.
I had to take a break after hearing the Pascal Villages theme. I knew nothing good would happen to that village and I didn't want to imagine what could happen to that little robot waving the white flag. I should have stopped playing the game.....
It reminds me of Carmina Burana.
Hello, Davi. I hope you're doing well. I would like to recommend a song that you might like to react to and analyze. It's the one from Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen, Daimon's 1st and 2nd phase theme. I hope you read it
Davi Vaasc, I am here to request to you that you should do League champion theme reactions, they have some amazing things you could explain to us in your videos, My personal recommendation would be God-King Darius theme first, **He's a champion but that's a skin dedicated to the champion with its own Theme so please check it out** Much love.
I love this song.. especially if you know whats going on. So sad
13:19 - Ò_ó
Hope to see your reaction to "Weight of the world" (jp version)
I suggest Kingdom Hearts " Fate of the Unknown "
You must to react to Shadowlord and Yonah, themes.
Hello. I am enjoying your videos as I translate them.
Is it okay if I make a request? If not, I am sorry to pollute your comment section.
Do you know the game Ar Tonelico?
There are many good choral songs like the one explained in this video.
Ar Tonelico EXEC CHRONICLE=KEY
Ar Tonelico2 EXEC over.METHOD SUBLIMATION
Ar Tonelico3 EXEC FLIP ARPHAGE
These are the titles of the three songs I especially want you to listen to.
Sorry if the English is strange.
Hope you react to more NieR music, especially Shadowlord and Kaine/Escape
I hope you get around to shadowlord at some point.
