A fellow Rose Madder reader thank god they do exist. Any of his books without movies has me thinking that they were not popular enough to get a movie. So mostly not read.
I ended most of my bullying early on when I just Punched a bully in the gut as I was walking by with an upper cut style punch... and those that still did pick on me I ignored or joked along with at my own expense. So yes I was bullied badly in kindergarten and 1st grade but the bullys learning that they'd be attacked back or at least get a reaction they did not find fun made them focus on others quickly. Plus I think I hung out with the popular crowd in elementary without realizing how popular they were. Point is the way Carrie and many others handle it; is the wrong approach and can lead to mental snaps. Bullys are trying to control you for entertainment or to prop themselves so if your boring or don't let them feel superior then why would they pick on you? That was my philosopher and it worked for me.
The bullet for teleken positive in Carrie even ties into other books. Not directly but in that some books you could see Carries story being apart of the back drop.
@GavinReadsItAll 'Salem's Lot has been the creepiest I've read so far. Just so much atmosphere and I kept having nightmares about someone watching me sleep for like a week after I read it.
After reading the shining, I understood why King HATED the movie. The Shining feels so personal to his struggles with addiction and I can see that theme in the book. I feel like Kubrick strips away those layers to Jack and just makes him an evil monster for no reason instead of someone possessed by addiction. Also RIP Shelley Duvall you are an icon 🩷🩷🩷
YES! I agree with this so much. I loved The Shining because Jack's descent into that madness was so well done and you could follow and feel his struggle. I understand translating it into movie form can be hard, but when I first watched it and Jack had that evil/unsettling vibe from the beginning, I really didn't like it because that's now how he came across in the book to me. The movie can be enjoyed if you take it as is, but I'll always stand by that as an adaptation it is NOT a good one.
@@billiep1603 i read a quote in a review which was something along the lines of “the book is written by a man who has struggled with alcohol and can feel the evil corrupting him and the movie is directed by a man who grew up with an alcoholic for a farther and can feel the evil in the air” and honestly that changed my prospective on both the book and film
I remember going into the book after having watched the movie and expecting to hate Jack but when I read the book I found myself feeling bad for him. It made the ending much sadder. The movie definitely did Jack dirty. Have you read the sequel that follows his son as an adult?
I was doing it this way until I started a UA-cam channel and it derailed that plan. Read straight through Carrie to Tommyknockers then fell down the Wheel of Time rabbit hole and here we are. I admire this project idea.
When you read King's 'On Writing', it is really crazy to think that Carrie was his first book published. The fact that he was a school teacher at the time too. It is so impressive how his first book is a horror classic. It almost makes me sad that we don't get the opportunity to be surprised by the story now since it's part of pop culture.
I was bullied relentlessly in school and my family were extremely religious. Reading Carrie was so difficult and honestly a little triggering. I just wanted to give her a hug the entire time. I feel you girl
Gav, have you heard of the podcast “Just King Things”? It’s a pair of dudes reading King in pub order and they do a deep dive into each book & it’s great. Gives some context for the time of publication and some of the reception of the books as well. A couple years ago I started reading King somewhat in pub order and that podcast was my fav way to close out each book!
I finally read The Shining in January and it effected me way more than I thought. I was in an 8 year long relationship with someone struggling with alcoholism and I saw so many things in that book that Wendy did or thought. It truly was so sad to me. But I really did like the book.
I really loved ‘Salem’s Lot because I loooove how King can write characters so well! This man wrote characters for a whole TOWN of people and each one felt unique! They seemed like real people instead of copy and paste of each other. I also felt like this book was a metaphor for how ‘big business’ comes in to destroy small towns. We have this wealthy man come in and inhabit the most iconic place of this hometown. Then he basically takes over, killing off the original residences of the town and sucks them dry of their resources. This is reminiscent of how a big business will come in and drive out the people who lived there first to make way for their own gains, and in return sucks the land and people dry.
Have you read the Tommy Knockers? It’s a similar vibe where a whole town is taken over (in some sense - no spoilers). I just finished it and I LOVED it

I love Salem's Lot as an exploration of the theme of the evil in small towns that King likes to go back to a lot in his horror. Just, how we know everyone in town so well and know the cruelty and darkness they're all capable of prior to the vampires descending on them is so good.
I loved hearing your empathy towards Carrie. It’s definitely a big theme that makes the story special to me too. I was bullied a lot in high school and a story like Carrie honestly gave me a lot of revenge fantasies when I was a kid. But now I look at the story with so much empathy and sadness for Carrie. The way you describe it really shows the different levels that story has. Also the made for TV version with Angela Bettis is one of my favorite adaptations. So I’ve read interview with King and he touched on it in On Writing I believe as well. He wrote as Bachman because he wanted to see if his name was what was selling the books or if he was really a good writer.
I really dislike Kubrick's adaptation of 'The Shining' because it turns Jack into the villain although he's just mentally so unstable that he becomes an easy victim for the overlook which is the actual villain. Also, what I feel with a lot of King movie adaptations is that they cannot convey the characters in the same sense the books do. What I love about King are his well flushed out characters and really round characters; as you said also they feel very very real and every time I've watched a movie adaptation of his books they do not live up to that. And that's something that especially happened in the shining. Kubrick rid Jack of all his traits and though it is amazing visually, the sense of the story and its characters is somehow lost entirely. Salem’s Lot is the only one of those that really interests me, but I can remember Carrie being in my PRIMARY school library waaaaay back in the late 1990’s.
Excited for you to get to Doctor Sleep (sequel to The Shining)! Honestly preferred it to The Shining, BUT the movie for Doctor Sleep was even better! Mike Flannigan, the director, poured so much love and respect in the movie to tie in The Shining movie and book together. The Shining movie by Kubrick was said to have been hated by Stephen King cause of how Jack was portrayed in the movie and how things ended.
I swear you read my mind about Carrie! I wrote a really in depth review of Carrie years ago, during my aspiring booktuber days. And you hit like every point I had outlined in that review. GET OUT OF HEAD! 😂
I also started reading Stephen King’s books in publication order this year! I’m skipping ahead to Doctor Sleep after finishing The Shining since it’s the sequel and I want to see how they fit together and I’m also stalling on figuring out how to get Rage as I didn’t really want to purchase it. I’m very excited to follow your videos and opinions while you’re reading these!
I’m so excited for you to discover the connections between all these books. And you made the right choice to leave all the Dark Tower books for last. You’re going to love this journey!
Love your videos! My favorite from this selection was definitely Salem’s Lot. But also I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on The Long Walk. It’s one of my favorite King’s novels I have read so far!
You should try the anime/manga Shiki, it's basically an adaption of Salem's Lot and it's really good!! Also love watching your hour-long videos ❤ always make my day
Gavin? Your videos rock!! I love watching u. It's like being with a comforting friend. Since you've done CARRIE, how about reading THE WEIGHT OF BLOOD (Tiffany Jackson)? I'd LOVE to hear your review .... take care!!
OMG. I have never commented but I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and now you are reading my all time most favorite author Stephen King. I have been reading his book since I was 12 years old and love to see other people read them. Can’t wait to see all your reactions to his books.
This is so fascinating, I love it 🥰 I haven’t read any of them. The Shining looks like the most interesting read to me. I can’t wait to watch the next episode 😊
The Shining is one of my favorites. IT is still in my top ten books. I cannot wait for you to get to it, please watch the mini series! Tim Curry does Pennywise so much more book accurate, sarcastic and mocking.
I'm planning to do this next year. I've read about 60% of his books so many will be rereads, and I'm still reading a few King books this year, that will be rereads for this project when I get to them again. I'm also rereading the Dark Tower series in its own month, possibly April depending on what readathons happen next April. I might reread the Bachman Books bindup with Rage, but I gave my copy to my sister already. Anyway, it'll be fun to see how our impressions match up over our King reading projects.
I have read over half of Stephen Kings books, from all over the place (publication order wise) and gonna read along with you, but only the ones I have not yet read. This means "Dead Zone" is up for me and maybe "The Long Walk" in its original, because once upon a time I only read the german translation... So happy with you vlogging this experience and most of all enyoing his books.
I think the convo around these books are more interesting than anything. Even if you are not into scary. Horror or spooky things. I can appreciate the convo these books spark
I don't think people nesecarly view 'The Shining' as a scary book. It's appreciated for its realistic and compassionate (but not condoning) portrayal of addiction. As someone with family members who have struggled with addiction, this book resonates with me very strongly.
I'm so glad you enjoyed Salem's Lot! I read it over 15 years ago and it still sticks with me and it's still one of my favorite Stephen King books, along with Cell and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
I didn't love The Shining either. That was the last book I read of Stephen King then I felt like I had enough. But hearing your perspective on Carrie makes me want to reread it and I am so excited for this series. You actually inspired me to read the rest of his books as well.
You not loving The Shining, one of my fave King novels, breaks my heart just a tad. Not too much because I get your perspective on the book and because I ADORE you. I like the book better than the movie because of the way Jack is more flushed out and not immediately crazy like in the movie. I agree that the exposition in some parts is just too damn much.
I am so sorry 😭 I really wanted to love it, but there is SO much to like about it for sure and I could still talk about it for hours and hours which is a sign of a great book :)
@@GavinReadsItAll Completely agree! I can’t wait until you get to Misery as that’s one of my faves too and I love hearing people’s thoughts on it. See you then! 💕
So, Ben Mears lived to be 55 years old. He wasn't 55 at the time of Salem's Lot. He was born in 1948, so yeah was 30ish during the events of Salem's Lot.
So excited for this series! I attempted all the books in pub order along with adaptations and made it pretty far before getting derailed by buddy reads but this will motivate me to get to the few I've missed! ❤
I love this idea. I read most of my Stephen King books in the 80’s (im showing my age😆)and now getting back to reading him. I think this will motivate me to go back and read them in order then follow along with your videos 😊
What perfect timing. I'm not really a Stephen King reader but I just recently finally picked up and started reading the old copy of The Colorado Kid that I got a few years ago and hadn't gotten around to.
One for the Road is two years after 'Salem's Lot, and Jerusalem's Lot is set around the 1850s. Also, King publishing under a secret name had more to do with the rate at which he was finishing books. His publisher was concerned that his fans would be fatigued by too many King books coming out so frequently, so he came up with Richard Bachman.
I'm SO EXCITED for this series, and so impatient for you to get to all the books. I'm like 75% of the way through his catalogue and it's taken me 15 years 😂😭 Well, it could have taken me a lot less time but I've been parceling them out like 4-6 a year. For me, there have only been one or two stinkers in all the books of his I read. I cannot wait to see what you think of The Dark Tower.
Soo excited for the next episode! The Long Walk is my favorite Stephen King book :D and I also never finished The Stand even though I liked it? And its my familys favorite King book, so I might have to reread that with you!
i remember someone saying the shining was written by an alcoholic but that the movie was made by the child of an alcoholic, i find that reading of it interesting
I wanted to do this too but I keep jumping around so not necessarily keeping to publication order but I’m trying!! Glad to have you do this along with me!
A lot of the Stephen King's books that I've read have a bit of build up to the scares but Desperation hits the ground running and is intense from start to finish. 😦😬 was my face the whole time I was reading it.
I've just printed out a list of all the Stephen King books so I can read them all. And now you are coming through with this series 🙌. Stephen King feels like the weird and a bit scary grandpa who sits in a chair telling stories while the wind is howling around the house 🌬

I swear you read my mind about Carrie! I wrote a really in depth review of Carrie years ago, during my aspiring booktuber days. And you hit like every point I had outlined in that review. GET OUT OF HEAD! 😂
I think ‘Bag of Bones’ is underrated. It’s not talked about enough.
Oh yes that book is underrated I really enjoyed the book the miniseries not so much
I just read it this year and I liked it more than I thought i would
@@victorialindblad6673 Bag, Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and Needful Things would be my three way pick for Most Underrated King.
Please read his memoir “on writing” it’s so good.
I need to get reading if I want to watch these! 😆 I’ve only read Carrie and 11/22/63 so far but I’ve been collecting them
Love your videos!
I'd LOVE to hear your review .... take care!!
Loved all the indepth thoughts on each book. It was really interesting to hear
OMG. I have never commented but I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and now you are reading my all time most favorite author Stephen King. I have been reading his book since I was 12 years old and love to see other people read them. Can’t wait to see all your reactions to his books.
Thanks so much for supporting
This is so fascinating, I love it 🥰 I haven’t read any of them. The Shining looks like the most interesting read to me. I can’t wait to watch the next episode 😊
Ooo if you read The Shining, I hope you enjoy it!
The Shining is one of my favorites. IT is still in my top ten books. I cannot wait for you to get to it, please watch the mini series! Tim Curry does Pennywise so much more book accurate, sarcastic and mocking.
I'm doing this as well! I am currently on The Eyes of the Dragon, so I hope I can keep pace with you!!
I cannot wait for your next Stephen King video.
Great Vlog series and wonderful commentary. Salem's Lot was my favorite as well, followed by The Shining and then Carrie. Have not read Rage.
Well, this pushed me to read Carrie for the first time. Wild how different it is from the King I know.
I'm so glad you enjoyed Salem's Lot! I read it over 15 years ago and it still sticks with me and it's still one of my favorite Stephen King books, along with Cell and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
This is so exciting!! I started my Kronological King reading in 2020 and have made it through 27 novels so far with soo many to go 😅
I didn't love The Shining either.
Thanks for the schedule ❤
I have 3 books to read for next time. Especially excited for The long walk
I'm so excited for this series! I myself am making my way through all Stephen King's books and am enjoying every minute! 😊
I'm not for sure if you read The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D Jackson but it is a Carrie retelling and is soo good.
Ooo I haven't but now I want to
So, Ben Mears lived to be 55 years old. He wasn't 55 at the time of Salem's Lot. He was born in 1948, so yeah was 30ish during the events of Salem's Lot.
So after you read the Dark Tower series you should definitely read Black House. Its kind of a Dark Tower side quest, he co wrote.
So excited for this series! I attempted all the books in pub order along with adaptations and made it pretty far before getting derailed by buddy reads but this will motivate me to get to the few I've missed! ❤
One for the Road is an excellent story!
I love this idea. I read most of my Stephen King books in the 80’s (im showing my age😆)and now getting back to reading him. I think this will motivate me to go back and read them in order then follow along with your videos 😊
I can remember Carrie being in my primary school library! I’ve read IT and I own Pet Semetary, Misery, along with IT and Fairytale.
I'm doing something similar, except I'm focusing on reading things that are in the multiverse, it's so cool to read his different lengths of writing.
Godspeed 🫡
Oh I already know I am going to love this series! I can't wait to hear your thoughts on some of my favourite books of his! Great work Gavin!
To quote Dominic Noble "HEDGES ARE NOT SCARY!"
I HATE SCARY MOVIES AND ETC BUT LOVE HEARING PPL TALK ABOUT THEM AND I'M LIVING FOR THIS SERIES.
What perfect timing. I'm not really a Stephen King reader but I just recently finally picked up and started reading the old copy of The Colorado Kid that I got a few years ago and hadn't gotten around to.
Hope you enjoy 😄
One for the Road is two years after 'Salem's Lot, and Jerusalem's Lot is set around the 1850s. Also, King publishing under a secret name had more to do with the rate at which he was finishing books. His publisher was concerned that his fans would be fatigued by too many King books coming out so frequently, so he came up with Richard Bachman.
I have been waiting for someone to do this because I plan to do it. I’ll be following your journey. You got a new subscriber
I'm SO EXCITED for this series, and so impatient for you to get to all the books. I'm like 75% of the way through his catalogue and it's taken me 15 years 😂😭
Well, it could have taken me a lot less time but I've been parceling them out like 4-6 a year. For me, there have only been one or two stinkers in all the books of his I read. I cannot wait to see what you think of The Dark Tower.
I am so ready for this Gavin! I was in your reading livestream last week it was so fun. Please do more!
I absolutely will, I loved doing that live stream!
Excited for this series! Seen so many of his movies but have only read Cell myself. Hopefully you have a good time with the books 😁
Omg I am so excited for this series, Gavin!
My favorite booktuber and my favorite autor! This os going to be an amazing journey!
Great project! ‘Salem’s Lot is my favorite King book!
His book, "On Writing" is very good.
i've been waiting in anticipation for this since you first mentioned the project! this is so exciting & i'm so interested to hear your thoughts on such a huge & iconic bibliography
Thank you so much for being here and watching, I appreciate you ☺
New subscriber! I started reading King when I was a kid, I’ve been reading / rereading his books one a month ❤ just finished his new one You Like It Darker
I am so excited for this series. King is my all time favorite and this will be fun. I just finished Billy Summers and loved it. I also finished book 6 of the Dark Tower the other day. Gosh I love King.
