This is so sweet. Not approaching it from a "what books do I not want to keep anymore" angle but rather "what books/series do I want to introduce to the youth in my community". It sounds a little selfish, but it really did put things into perspective for me. I'll be going through my own collection to see if there's anything else I can share to my local library or used bookstore as well.
"I have an agenda" I can relate. My small, southern american town has 5 little libraries around by the schools and parks and I've been handing down my educational and inclusive books. Since kids and teens need an adult to check out library books and there are so many bans now in the school libraries. I hope they find their way to the people who need them.
I spent a lot of time in hospital as a kid and teen, and I can’t thank the people who donated books enough. Spending weeks and sometimes months in hospital is depressing on bad days, but also super boring if you’re having a good day lol! My children’s ward had a playroom, but you weren’t allowed to go alone and they didn’t have it open on weekends so most days I spent in my hospital room with the books gifted by kind people. I actually think I ended up reading most of the books they had there, and looking back it really made such a difference in my childhood experience at the hospital. Reading gave me something to do when I felt better, it was something to look forward to, and it gave me a much-needed escape on bad days. The same of course goes for YA/adult books, a couple years ago I went to hospital and stayed for 4 days and while I wasn’t really able to read (drugged tf up after surgery 💀) I saw most of the well-enough patients reading magazines and books. That ward had just a single bookshelf that was barely half-full, so if y’all are ever unhauling books of any kind; please consider asking your local hospitals if they accept donations!
It is so funny how once you start donating, you don't want to stop. My friends have a vacation home in a low income country. We donate books yearly. They are so thankful and wrote us a thank you note. So now I always looked to see what they need and get it for them.
For any books that your library doesn't take, I would recommend donating them to a books to prison program! I don't know how it works in the U.K, but in the U.S, most prisons have strict rules about not allowing hardcover books, so b2p can be a great way of unhauling paperbacks and ARCs!
it's so great that your library takes donations. Mine rarely takes donations, though to be fair they do have a massive and diverse catalogue. There was a series they had books 1 and 3 of and didn't want 2 & 4 because it would cost them to process and they are very strategic on what they stock. I was just sad that someone would love book one and then not be able to borrow the next one. However, their stock strictness has benefited me in that they get rid of a lot of books via library sales too so I've been able to buy them cheap.
It's wonderful that you can donate to your library! When my mother was unhauling her books a few years ago, she checked with her local library, which is in a town with a population of about 2,000 plus the surrounding farms. They could only accept a very small amount of donated books due to space considerations and library rules. They're part of a larger library system, too, and somewhat regulated, I guess. Anyway, I'd bought her all of the Inspector Gamache hardcovers by Louise Penny. She loves them and they were released around her birthday every year (and now Christmas), so they make great gifts. The library was thrilled to get them. I think there were about 14 at the time. She's probably still donating the new ones I give her after she and numerous friends have read them. And there's a new one for Christmas this year! I hope your library can accept a lot more than my mother's tiny library.
This warmed my heart so much! Another place to consider is donating the books to your local school libraries ♥️ not sure how that works in the UK but you can usually call the school librarian and ask if theyre interested. Thats where my love of reading started :)
Yes, UK school librarian here, donations can be very helpful, especially if I get a list that I can say yes or no to! I keep duplicates of popular things to replace damaged books, and anything I can't keep goes into a book sale to raise money for charity or more library books!
Love seeing you go through your middle grade shelves because, as a parent of a middle grade child, I always get good recommendations for Christmas! He’s reading Ursula Vernon’s (T Kingfisher) Dragonbreath series now and I like that he is reading an author that I also read.
as a first grade teacher, this warms my heart so much! reading is so important and unfortunately most kids today aren’t invested in it, hopefully you can anonymously introduce some kids to their new lifetime books!
Awwww, bad timing for the library donations! I am not sure what your public schools are like there, but I donate my MG and YA books to my local Middle School and High School libraries. I just dropped off around 85 books to the high school last week. Their budget is so limited for new books, so the librarian was absolutely elated. It's my 3rd big unhaul to them in about 5-years. They're so grateful. You should reach out and find out. Even if not for these books, perhaps for future unhauls
How kind! Also as someone who uses the captions I really appreciate you making an effort to pronounce words clearly. The auto-generated subtitles aren't perfect but as someone who needs them to focus it's better than nothing.
Another small thing that everyone can do is go and check out books that you want to stay in the library. If something isn't checked out for a long time It's more likely to be discarded. I've been adding a couple books to each of my check outs that I've already read and return them with the rest or just immediately put it back in the return.
What an undertaking you took! What a great thing to do. Bummer they didn't tell you before that they will be closing 😮. Hopefully they will eventually take a lot of them.
This is so kind of you-- down to the last detail of putting this in Google sheets. Your library is going to have an epic refurbishment with your donations!
Truly lovely gesture from Gavin. I can only imagine the librarian eyes when they saw the list you emailed them. Hopefully they'll take most of the books from you, they would be crazy not too.
I love that you wanted to give books you enjoyed! They are in such good condition too, that’s so important. And as a cataloging librarian… THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THE ISBN ON THE SHEET!!!
Your library will be so blessed when they get all those books!!! I hope one day you can run into someone who is checking out one of the books you donated!
Please also consider when donating to your library just donating books without thinking of what you think "should be" in the library. Curation of the library is the librarian's job because they know their patrons habits and interests. All these donations are great, but please don't go buying things just because you think it's valuable for the library. What would be best if you are going to spend money and buy books is to ask the librarians for a list of titles they need or donate a sum of money and specify that you want books purchased with those funds. I get donations at my library all the time and unfortunately books that people think we should have are often things we either already have or are too outdated to justify the shelf space. At least it looks like the ones you are donating are fairly recent and in excellent condition. I like that they ask for a list for donations. That's a great idea I wish my patrons would do.
so not only am i adding to my already extensive tbr, i'm sitting here with my coffee watching you unhaul books with a huge smile on my face. you are so generous and giving - all the kids (and adults!) are going to be so happy reading so many good books!! ♥
I am going to start a library challenge of my own next month, no videos though I think. In my county here in Sweden, which are the surrounding areas of the capital Stockholm, I found out that we have over 40 libraries! All possible to visit by train or bus within an hour from me. So I have decided to visit 1 or 2 of them a month until i have visited them all. I'm going to make outings of it. They are all connected so I can lend and return books at any if them so I can literally go like two years without visiting the same library twice. 😂
I have a similar goal and it has been really fun and interesting for the three new libraries I've visited so far. Although in my city there are only 13 rather than 40 which makes it a bit easier. Hope you enjoy your libraries.
Oh no, that ending! :D I donated two books to my library this week, I didn't even know they would take donations. I was asking about a free library shelf they had in front, and she was like: if you have new stuff in good condition we'll take it. :D
This is such a lovely thing to do and I love that it’s not just books you didn’t like or won’t read but also ones that are great that you want other people to be able to experience
I love donating books to my library! They have a used bookstore that’s open once a month, so any donations they don’t want for their collection can go to the book sale to earn money for things they need!
I wonder if maybe they could at least tell you which ones they will take so you can have them set aside from ones they won’t and you can at least find different homes for any they won’t while you wait for them to open donations again.
Ha, I tried to spread my horror agenda to my library only to discover they don't put donations - brand new releases - into their collection. They just sell them to buy more non-horror books. 😂 So now I sell them to pay for my out of state library cards and support horror-friendly libraries, whoops...
You’re a star Gavin - you’ve inspired me to contact my library to see if they will accept some of the books in my unhaul pile before I take them to the charity shop. 😊

But, does this mean you will be able to go back to your old library for a nostalgic trip? It can't seem to let you go, Gavin lol Hope you will (eventually) make a lot of children happy. And great video!😊

gavin has PLANS for that library😂
Florence, please don’t be Gavin’s library arch-nemesis. He’ll get a whiteboard and make a detailed timeline
Not Gavin giving the library ideas on how to display the books 😂
He's going to be a seasonal volunteer, coming in and doing displays and recommendation cards.

It’s so kind of you to help your local library out by donating so many of your amazing books. You’re such an inspiration 📚
Me, a blaydon resident, rubbing their hands in anticipation 👐🏻
I am also betrayed by the renovation, they’ve not mentioned it anywhere 🫠 i will have to drive to central library
Maybe you can help Gavin by requesting some of the titles on his donation list so that they take them.
