    Please be advised, the “dots” seem to be where fretted basses would have them.
    You best off blotting them out and finding the actual point where these intonation guide-dots belong

    I own a fretless Glarry, and the tuning keys are fine. I have heard that this is a hit or miss issue with their whole product line. But, it is a relatively inexpensive fix, so it is still a good value. The only thing that I changed are the strings. Fretless basses require good flatwound strings.
    All in all, I absolutely love mine.

      @@CIRCLEOFTONE I've been playing fretless and fretted basses for gigs for nearly 30 years--can you GUESS which brand is among them? Do not knee jerk-subscribe to the "must-have" flatwound hypothesis...but if you prefer a somewhat darker, duller sound, flats R cool. I've used rounds successfully for the entire span; they work just as well if not better (for coaxing that celebrated "mwah"). (I would stay away from "half-rounds" or "semi-rounds" because, for me, they almost felt like sticky sandpaper, if you can imagine what that must feel like.) What leads me to believe that many who automatically insist on flatwounds are applying or parroting, but not specifically stating, a well-known fact that flats wear through the fretboard at MUCH slower rate than rounds.
      Furthermore, if I want to create specific tonal spectrums, well I've got a GREAT amp for achieving that effect.
      If you're a DIYer, you can follow any number of UA-cam instructional vids about how to apply layers of cyanoacrylate, aka "Superglue," to a worn fretboard and sand/buff/polish them until you achieve a super glossy, pretty much impervious finish. OR, if you don't like committing about a week to this task, at the price, consider ordering a NEW ONE! [:^) Which is what I'm going to do tomorrow. btw, I'm buying one of those "burlywood" basswood models tomorrow!

      I got the fretted P-style bass at least 6 months ago, and the tuners are fine so far. I love the strings it has, and plan on buying some more sets for my other (fretted) basses.

      @@FenderBassMan I recently bought a lined fretless 5 string (they didn't have any unlined models). It came with roundwound strings, so I was expecting that 'mwahh' I always hear about, but it doesn't do that, the roundwounds aren't smooth enough, so I was disappointed. I can't wait to try flatwounds on it, but I won't waste these strings, so it can wait a few months. My main bass is an unlined Fretless Jazz made in Japan, and I have another unlined fretless. I am so used to fretless, when I play a fretted, it feels weird and slow.

    I love fretless bass in metal, it just has a texture that is so nice. There is a learning curve with alot of muscle memory involved especially on an unlined fretless if you don't want to autotune the shit out of it and half the time the side markers are wrong anyway. You gotta trust your ear on this one.

    Asking an important question for fretless beginners:
    Are the fretdots at the right place? Like where the tone is intonated proper?
    On my Fenix the fretdots are on the places you would expect it on a fretted bass, nearly impossible to intonate right for a fretles beginner.
    They just took a neck that was supposed to get fretts and screwed it to a body.
    I am fine with this, the old Fenix is a wonderful instrument, but a beginner may be verry confused with that.

      In the beginning I just held another neck to the one without spots and made signs on the neck of the fretless. For every fret a mark.
      So I learned proper intonation (again, had a Squier Jazz fl in the '80's), until the handmade markers were wiped off by my hand.
      To be honest, I had to refreshed the marks some times until I was able to use the bass in live situations.
      Highly skilled players don't need fretmarks or -spots. But I for myself needed the spots about the first few month.
      Btw., MusicMan adds fretlines on their fretless basses.

    • @Terrible_Peril
      @Terrible_Peril 4 роки тому +3

      Often on a fretless with no lines, the dots are placed where the fret would be (where the note is). On a lined fretless neck, the face or side dots are typically where you’d find them on a fretted neck and the lines replace the frets.
      There are different models and manufacturers that do it differently, but I’ve found the above observation to be by far the most common.
      Then of course there are models with no marks of any kind. If you have one of those, I’d recommend putting a strip of tape along the back of the neck in at least a few positions (maybe 5th fret, 9th fret, 12th fret?) to at least get you in the ballpark. Use a tuner to help you get close.
      Other fretless beginner tips: GOOD FORM. Keep your fingers curved, wrist under a bit more, so your fingertips are hitting dead on at right angles to the string path. That will help with note definition and intonation. And most importantly, stick with it. Autotuned (fretted) basses can’t mwah. You know you need more mwah in your life.

      @CIRCLEOFTONE  4 роки тому +1

      @@Terrible_Peril great info. I may need to re position the markers on this one.

    • @EpictheEpicest
      @EpictheEpicest 4 роки тому

      @@kongandbasses8732 What you can do is take a small drill bit and drill into the side dots, then use a screw to pull them out, and fill in the holes with wood filler (you want a color similar to the wood of your neck). Then take it to a tech, have them intonate it and mark the new dot positions with a pencil. Then you can simply make new dots for cheap with a black marker or phosphorescent paint. The advantage of the paint is you can see the markers in the dark when you are gigging. Playing with good technique helps intonation a lot, but it's still nice to have the option of seeing where the frets would be on occasion.

    Having played fretless bass for over forty years I can tell you the side dot markers are in the wrong place. In the higher register the strings buzz like mad. You will need to level the upper register of the fretboard or live with the buzz (this is NOT mwah or growl, it's tone/volume killing buzz). That being said if you can fix the side markers and level the fretboard it's good for the price.

    This is going to be my next purchase,my only thing about these GLARRYS I just ,well I'm figuring it out now,I swapped the pickups of my 5 string,it sounds great with the Wilkinson pickups I put in,only problem is,their both on full,the front pot quit working all together and the rear pickup now functions both pups and it's backwards,I'm guessing it's my error I never wired a jazz before,all I did was attached the negative and posative where I took them off at. Like I said it sounds great though. I'm still sticking to buying a Glarry now is an investment like buying a fender in the 60s,call me crazy all you want on that one

      A 5 string fretless is a usefull instrument. You are able to find patterns that are easy to use, especially when you are able to use, lets say, low C or D.
      I play 5 string basses 80% of the time, and I would love to have a 5 string fretless.

      @@alanredversangel
      So lets mention the low B. ;) Actually there are 4 half steps below the E. And a 5 string is usefull for all of them. Even if you play a song in E you are able to play a walking or cromatic line up to your E. You are able to use 3rd, 4th and 5th under your main note.
      5 - bangers are useful, trust me. So is the G on the 8th fret of a fiver much fatter and much more mighty as the G on the 3rd fret of the E string.
      But I recommend my students to tune down a 4 string to B for checking out, if low tunings are any good for them, and not buying a instrument that ends as a wallhanger.
      My first experiences with the low B have been on my Warwick Streamer stage I. It sounded so good and felt so right that I bought a 5 string bass shortly after.
