  • Something I've wanted to do for a while now - add a second NIC/network port to my EliteDesk Mini. The G4/G5 work well and the G3 is so-so - you be the judge.
    Links
    On Amazon or eBay do searches for items like "a+e I210" - the one I ordered was www.amazon.com... but do some looking. Try to find one that is shipped by Amazon or else you'll be waiting a while. The part that connects to the wifi slot has "FULLWIN G24A001" on one chip and the smaller one has WGI210AT on it.
    The 3d design for the bracket is www.thingivers... - much thanks to Casper Pedersen (casperghst42)
    I used Craftcloud craftcloud3d.com/ mainly because you can get a quote without creating an account. I have no affiliation with them.

    Another interesting video for sure, but for me I think it may have had the opposite effect of what you had in mind. It has convinced me that I would have to sacrifice way to much (aka lose a 2280 nvme slot (down to 2230) , lose sata caddy, have to 3d print a bracket and have to mod the case to close properly). Great to watch for sure though.
    Also wanted to thank you for one of your previous videos where you showed the method to lookup warranty. I did that just for fun on the (2) 806 g6 units I been messing with and was stunned to find out they are still in warranty. So thanks to your video I am now able to get both units repaired for free.
    Thanks again

      You know I feel much the same way. I think it makes sense for those cases where you get a really good price on an extra unit and decide to do the tweaks to it. I'm glad to hear you were able to get the warranty service. Feels like when I buy a used DVD and the digital code still works, a nice little benefit.

    I have no need to modify my Prodesk but just wanted to watch the video. I have two G3 600s and rarely use them, whenever I do need them, I mainly use one for a second desktop instead of my spare SFF HP Z230 or laptop. I'm currently setting up Linux Mint on one of my G3s for gaming because of Microsoft's shenanigans with Windows 11.

      Well at least you have some units you can experiment with.

    In my case, I never bothered with Intel chip and bought a Realtek M.2 A+E 2.5G adapter from AliExpress for less than $12 for my 2nd ethernet on my EliteDesk 800 G3 Mini. My pfSense with proxmox setup has been running stable for months with 500+Mbps (download) and 750+ Mbps (upload) speed. Very satisfied with the purchase.

      Did you mount the port with a bracket?

    • @johnc4929
      @johnc4929 3 місяці тому

      Yes I did. I 3D printed the bracket for the rj-45 socket and it fits perfectly in the flex io bracket.

      @@johnc4929 pleased to hear that pfsense worked with it. Were any additional drivers needed?

    • @johnc4929
      @johnc4929 3 місяці тому

      No additional drivers installed, proxmox recognized the card and pfSense had no issues with it.

      Bought from AE for $11.83
      Shipment took about 10 days from China. 😊

    Hello, thanks for sharing this video. I would like to ask Is this model of HP G3 or G4 Can run 24/7 if I am going to use as my firewall like PFsense? Thank you.

      Definitely, they are tough units made for the corporate world. You might look at my video on power consumption. Seemed like the G4 was a bit more efficient.

    The intel i225 version of this costs almost the same as the gigabit version. Might as well get that for future proof.

      I wasn't able to find that on Amazon or eBay. Where are you seeing a+e slot i225 NICs?

      Aliexpress probably

    • @casperghst42
      @casperghst42 3 місяці тому

      The i225 will not work with the wireless slot, you'll have to sacrifice one of your NVMe slots.

      @@handmedowntech sorry, you're right - I have a RealTech 2.5GbE network card. But I have not seen an Intel 2.5GbE nic for the A+E which can fit into an Elitedesk 800 G4/5.

    Awesome. Wondering if this will work with the G2, I want to turn one into a OPNsense FW

      The port itself would work but you'd have to have it dangling outside the unit. The expansion port does not have a large enough hole to accommodate the network port. I guess you could also leave it inside and snake the cable through the hole.

    hey man, ive been working with those PCs to get me a mini nas / home server with some actual processing power. i have designed a 3d printable HDD cage for two drives, but it can scale for up to 11 sata drives. it seems to me, that we are thinking in the same direction and we should have a chat. i am good with linux, programming, cad, mechanics and i have a degree in electronics. but i think you know a bit more about the different versions of those computers. let me know if you are interested in an exchange / discussion of ideas, problems and solutions!

      Not sure what you mean. The adapter used in the video has an Intel chip.
