- So here it is, my how-to on replacing the auxiliary belt, tensioner, and deflection pulley on my 2006 E46 318ci, I believe this guide will be relevant to all Beemers with the N42 or N46 engines. Hope you find the video helpful!
I found conflicting information on what the torque specs for the deflection pulley and tensioner should be. The general consensus was between 30-40nm, I tightened both of mine to 35nm and I haven't had any issues.

Very nice video, clear, precise, a joy to watch especially with no silly music in the background!

Thanks for your video.
Hello, thanks for the video, very helpfull! Just what i needed 👍😁
My car ( n42b20a ) started the last week with some rough idling and hesatation..
Last weeks changed the ignition coils, sparkplugs, oil, oil filter, oil filter house gasket, vanos solenoids ( cleaning and replaced the o- rings)
But still have the isseu.. so i found out the left engine mount is failing and now i see also that my pulley tensioner is really hard vibrating. Gonma change this ASAP 😁 Do you think that this wil also give the engine some rough vibration?
S.A kardesim bende herseyi degistirdim ve hala ses geliyordu auxilary belt den. 1 Hafta Sonra hepsini degistircem. Bazen direksiyonu kirdigim zaman arabanin devri (rpm) iniyor baya. Veya bazen Xenon yaktigim zaman da (rpm) bi kac saniye icin düsuyor. Ve arabadan cayik cayik ses geliyor . Sen ne yaptin bisey yardim ettimi ???
i have this engine with different tensioner which uses torx bits. i somehow broke the T60 hole that meant for de-tensioning the pulley assembly before i can pull the belt. did you have advice how should i remove the belt without breaking the tensioner?. it's still good other than that broken T60 part so i was trying to re-use it since they're quite expensive
Thanks
Hi,so what is the torque specs for the tensioner and idling pulley, thanks
is this a powerful engine
I know this is an old video, but is the deflection pulley the same pulley as the one on the belt tensioner? The pulley on my belt tensioner blew up so I replaced it and I've just discovered my tensioner has now gone bad and needs to be replaced, all replacement tensioners come with a pulley already attached but as I discovered my deflection pulley has also melted, so I was wondering if I could take the pulley off my old tensioner, replace my deflection pulley with it, then replace the entire tensioner itself with it's new pulley
No, there are not the same. Actually dimensions of the plastic pulley are the same, but mount system is different.
@@NikolaHetfield11 the mount for the deflector is still good, just the plastic pulley itself is shot, so could I swap my tensioner then take the pulley off the old tensioner and replace the deflector pulley with it?
@@FrenchyAU No, no. You must buy new pulley. Bearing inside is bad.
@@NikolaHetfield11 yes I know the bearing inside is bad I won't be replacing just the plastic I'm replacing the whole pulley
Thanks, so this engine has only one belt, mine just broke and wanted to order one while not beside the car :)
No it has the timing belt also, not just one belt
@@mattygreening6073 It has a timing chain , which is inside the engine , If you take off the oil cap you can see it inside . It also has an Aux Belt which is rubber and that is outside the engine , The Aux belt is used to turn the Waterpump, AC, Power steering etc . This vid is for the Aux Belt , If the timing Chain stretches or snaps thats a whole different ballgame.
