- The Nikon FG comes at the tail end of what I think is the classic Nikon era, mostly manual cameras. They start to introduce some automatic features while still remaining loyal to the design aesthetics, in 1982. .

In the 80s I did wedding photography nearly every weekend. I had a medium format for the wedding itself, and my FG for the reception and couples and family shots. It was very dependable, worked great with a flash and NEVER gave me any problems. I would like to have another one to do my darkroom BnW work. I loved that camera. Well worth it and very durable.
Thanks for sharing! I love hearing stories like this.
* A battery saving tip for when the Nikon FG is not being used * I know that Nikon has a timer on the meter display, but to switch off any accidental current draw from the batteries - move the shutter speed dial to either the M90 or B position. I do this when I put the FG away for the day.
How the timer works?
@@jaysssi4821 Jay - You may have missed the intent of my post - which was in regards to storing or transporting the camera. - When the shutter speed dial is adjusted to the M90 position all the electrical circuits within the Nikon FG are switched off. At this shutter speed setting, the FG becomes a 100% mechanical camera.
To answer your question: Whenever the shutter release button is partially depressed, the light meter will remain active for 20 seconds.
Thanks
Thank you SO much for this. I have been sitting here for hours trying to understand how to change the ISO. Who would have thought the ring lifts? lmfao
Lol, people ask me if they can use both color and black and white films in the same camera. Covering all my bases 👍
Yay I got my FG today..in 'excellent plus' condition. Still has the JCII inspection sticker on it. Seems like I'm going backwards in terms of Nikon camera build quality level: I also have an Ftn Photomic circa 1971, and an FM circa 1980. I bought the FG primarily for sentimental reasons: my wife had one which I passed on to my granddaughter a couple of years ago and I miss the thing so much I decided to get another one. Oh and to take advantage of the off-the-film TTL flash metering capability with the Nikon SB-15 flash unit. As to the battery draining issue: we had that issue with my wife's FG: on several occasions we pulled it out to use only to find the batteries completely drained. The FG meter is activated by pressing down the shutter button lightly about half way down. Due to the tight fit of her camera in her camera bag, the padding in the bag was pressing down on the shutter button thus the batteries were drained in short order. Previous comment about setting the shutter dial to the M90 position for storage is a good suggestion. Also if the batteries do fail: if the shutter sticks just move to the M90 position and the shutter will fire. All in all a very handy little camera.
When you got to the end and said that camera is only 30 bucks... man how times have changed lol
right?!
The pandemic really drove up prices
To me the design is the most complete mirror reflex camera ever. Don't know why, it just looks very good.
If you dial it to M90 it's able to wind without batteries.
Thanks for that info.,
I just thrifted this for $8. The view finder goes black on A or P modes, only working on B or M60, do you happen to know what can cause this?
Sounds like a dead battery or bad electronics. A and P modes definitely using electricity to control some camera functions. B mode lets the user more fully control the shutter
I have one of these but don’t know which series it is exactly could you help me
Very useful, could you recommend a video or make one yourself about how does the exposure matter when taking a picture?
Just got this camera in mint condition I love it!
Glad you like it!
Couple of points not mentioned: (1) The FG used in AE or P mode with AI lenses or lenses converted to AI employs the TTL metering system used the next year in the FA, giving more accurate metering than the earlier style FE meter. It uses diode readouts rather than the mechanical meter of the FE. Overall, FG has more accurate and durable metering compared to the FE. (2) The "Series E " lenses sold for the FG (and EM or FG-20) are single coated [less contrast] and generally of inferior design [less sharp] to regular Nikkor lenses. The better lens for the FG is a 50mm 1.8 NIkkor, making a superb user camera in the Nikon line.(3) The motor drive for FG is quite slow, about 1.5 frames/sec, not stated 3 framers/sec. A bit rare to find and about $50+ to buy. Not worth it and makes the camera too bulky and heavy.
No but i have little experience either. Have you had a problem relating to lack of mirror lock-up?
Really great video thanks! I have the FG-20 and would love to see anymore tips you could offer on using the camera
Glad you enjoyed it. Do you have a specific question in mind?
Why is your 28mm F/3.5 Non AI not converted to take the FG properly? Right there on time frame 4:31 is showing the AI cam at a 3 to 4 stops & a half over??? get the lens converted
Hi! I just bought this camera at a flea market, in a very good condition, it was working just fine. But when I got home, I tried things out, removed the batteries and put it again (bunch of times now with newer batteries), then it went off. The view finder is black and the film-advancer lever(?) is jammed. Do you have any idea why and how to repair it?
It may not be the battery and could just be a jammed shutter. You may need to take in for repair or reach out to Fix Old Cameras channel and drop him a request. Not sure this repair is worth it if it cost more than 50$.
Shawnee Union I turn the mode to M90 and it's not jammed anymore! Thank you!
It was $99 dollars for the shutter at the camera store. Lucky it fixed itself after hearing the price
@@fyndyn Thanks for the help! I had the same issue and found this video trying to fix it!
Is that lens converted to Ai or did you just damage your camera ?
literally blew up off screen after takes.
Mine does not reset the film counter completely.
It stops at 16.
Any idea how to fix this?
how does the light meter work?
you said your Advance is jammed? mine is too! do you know how i could fix thhat?
Could be easy or hard, you can sometimes remove the bottom plate and 'reset' the gearing mechanism. Other than that it can get pretty tricky, check out fix old cameras bit.ly/2aXhlnY
I fixed mine by changing the battery!
I don’t know much bout camera but I got a FG20 from my grandfather. How did you open the battery holder on the bottom?? I can’t figure it out
leah nadi I can’t believe I didn’t think of this 🤣thanks!
Use a nickel. Actually their designed for japanese nickels, but good ol' Jeffersons do fine.
Hello How do you fix the advance?
Thanks for the info:)
Not an easy fix, may want to take to repair shop.
Where we get the roll
What lens is that?
I think i am the only person thats 15 and has a film camera
Asalamoalakum. I have this very camera in good and working condition. It has a made in Japan HAZE 52mm (UV) lens as well. We have albums full of excellent quality photos taken with it but the era of light weight digital cameras has put this veteran to rest in a shelf. If I plan to sell it what price should be a reasonable demand?
Anything above $20.
Non ai lens ? I think that might damage the camera no?
Yes it Would plus the exposure will be OFF! on the way his camera is set up. Always use AI lens or get the Old NON AI converted to take Nikon models that takes AI lenses, like the FM, FM2, FE, FE2, Nikon ELW, EM, FG, FG20, FT3, F2A, F2AS, F3,F4, F5, F6, and the Nikon D2 through D5 & D600 through D800 series DSLR models that HAS the AI Cam ring mounted.
Still have mine think I bought in in 1984
I have one of this brand new and it comes with a flash on a leather bag.
I just came up on one and idk how to use it!! My 1st camera ever
I have a large collection of 1980s and 1990s 35mm SLRs for my collection mainly for nostalgia. I have an FG in the collection. For its time, it was a decent and good value SLR. It has TTL flash, a programme mode when sued with AIS lenses, and viewfinder metering when in manual mode. I would say better than the Minolta X700 of the same time period. Things really off with the arrival of the Minolta 7000 AF SLR in 1985. From then autofocus was the norm, though manual focus SLRs were still available.
I have the same camera, sadly i don't have any clues on how to use it... internet will help
There are numerous videos up on UA-cam about how to use..along with the full manual on the internet that can be downloaded.
Hola!
Maybe low battery or bad electronics. Try using another mode to see if it clears the block.
My FG every time I take a picture the mirror stays up and I have to put the shutter to M90 in order to flip it back down. When I take a picture with M90 the mirror does not have this issue. Does anyone know what’s wrong with it?
Your Batteries might be dead, this had happened to me twice. replace the batteries
What is this "M90" setting? All help greatly appreciated! :)
A paid $120 is that too much?
If everything works I think it’s fair. This videos pretty old now
i paid $300😭
You should script yourself, you wander too much.
