Zach Braff (A Good Person, Scrubs) joins us in person this week for a deep convo about the passion and catharsis that went into his film ‘A Good Person’ alongside the emotional rollercoaster that came with its production.
Zach opens by reminiscing about belly laughs and good times with his cast mates during Scrubs and the life changing experience that the series was for him.
We also talk about the intricacies of directing legends like Morgan Freeman and Harrison Ford, his Emmy nomination directing Ted Lasso, and the chip on his shoulder that drives him to constantly be creating.

ZACH BRAFF: Stressed When Still, Missing Scrubs & ‘Garden State’ Chip on the Shoulder #insideofyou #zachbraff #agoodperson
I do a Scrubs marathon every couple of years. The episode where Brendan Fraser died in the beginning and Dr Cox is just imagining him until the end is absolute gold. All the emotions this show brings is fantastic.
Nice way to spoiler it for people who have never seen Scrubs. 😂
I only have seen random episodes but I was listening to men at work and my husband perked up and said he knows this song (overkill.) he then talked about the episode. I think that show is one of his faves.
EAGLE
if you want that same pain but don't have the time for the episode, just play the song "winter" from joshua radin.
@@ryandeffley7652 granted its 20 years old now so not really his fault if he's spoiling it, however that was the most unhinged way to give away that episode.
Scrubs is such an amazing show. That whole cast was crazy talented.
Scrubs was one of the greatest shows, it had everything. You'd go from dying laughing to broken and crying. Those Brendan Fraser episodes are still top tier to me.
Zach Braff is just a genuinely pleasant and talented individual. And as always Michael, you're killing it with these!
DIRECTOR: "All right everybody, that was a great first take. Let's do another one."
MORGAN FREEMAN: "Why?"
lmao
I was a massive Scrubs fan. "EAGLE!" Also Garden State is an amazing film. Love Zach!
Betrayal Five! Miracle Five!
Scrubs is one of the very few shows that still holds up so well today. Rewatching it only makes it better. I genuinely believe it's one of the best shows ever made.
Scrubs is one of my 'comfort' shows that I can put on when my head is not in a good place and it can drag me out, make me laugh, cry and feel.
Scrubs is the one show I can rewatch and laugh every time. It's my favourite.
Garden State will always be a comfort film but right next to that is Wish I Was Here. I love both dearly as they really are different points and perspectives of life.
Thank you Zach for everything and giving me a place to lay my mind while I put back pieces when needed
Listening to this episode now and I am learning so much about Zach. He is such a talented actor, writer, and director. I am glad that y’all got him to come back on the podcast.
The music on garden state is on another level. One of the best soundtracks
It was nice to see Zach back on the podcast, he definitely seems much more relaxed than the last time, life must be treating him well. I will definitely check out his work especially ”A Good Person” and “Garden State”. Thanks for another interesting and informative episode🤩
I just finished listening to this episode and it is delightful. Zach definitely opened up and had so many great stories. I definitely agree with him about things that you can’t control. I was sorry to hear about the loss of his dad. Have a great week everyone.
Ah Scrubs kept me sane during a very difficult period of my life. Laughter always.
Back in the day I only caught random episodes of Scrubs when it was on TV. About 4 years ago I found the entire show available for streaming so I decided to watch it and ended up watching most of it in a span of a few months and it became one of my favorite shows ever. You could tell they were having fun making it and the writing was just great and extremely funny.
Zach can pick songs for his projects like no other!
Scrubs is my happy place. I can quote it all but enjoy it every time

Every podcast with ads and intros needs a commenter like you.
Why post this crap? This awesome podcast needs its revenue to stay alive. Shame on you.
@luckrequired5382 lmao. Yes they need to do it for the money to keep it going but I hope you realize us either skipping 10 seconds at a time through the video til we get to the interview compared to clicking these time stamps, makes no difference to the uploader. Without people like this, people like me would be more likely to just say F it and listen to something with less bs. So stfu.
@luckrequired5382 - It doesn't seem like you understand how marketing revenue works. Rosenbaum gets paid for plugging the services regardless.
This would be like you trying to shame someone for fast-forwarding through commercials and claiming that effected a show's budget. 😆
@luckrequired5382 - I mean, please tell me that you don't think you have to sit through every ad because that's paying into the marketing revenue? 😆
Zach was such a great guest! I was a big fan of Scrubbs and Garden State back in the day. His podcast with Donald allowed us to feel like we really got to know him, and he seems like a pretty great person. I enjoyed this podcast episode so much.
Garden State is one of my all time favorite movies. Thanks Zach and inside of You.
My Dad has 5 phrases that are daily reminders: 1) Be amazing 2) Do something that sucks everyday 3) Do something at your expense that benefits someone else. 4) Change your routine 5) Be amazing!
I love Zach. Scrubs was one of my favorite shows of all time and still re-watch it all the time. Thank you for a wonderful interview!
For anyone reading, Garden State is a great grief/romance movie! SERIOUSLY Give it a chance!
Natalie Portman is really great in it.
That was really entertining to watch. Thanks for this podcast, Michael!
Wish I Was Here was an absolute blast. I helped Kickstarter it, met Zach and Adam at the SF meet & greet, and it was the best date I ever took my wife on. Definitely see that if you haven't.
Zack Braff maybe would make a great Plastic Man for James Gunn-Peter Safran's DCU. James Gunn's style of whitty humor I feel Zack Braff would understand well. He can nail that performance if given the opportunity. When he speaks he sounds like Plastic Man.
I discovered one of my favorite artists from the Garden State soundtrack, Imogen Heap (Frou Frou). Love Scrubs, it was one of a kind. Thanks for your body of work, Zach!
Yesss!! Looking forward to this interview. Zach is always a great guest! Thx for getting him on the show!
This is gonna be epic! I was introduced to Zach Braff in Garden State and I hated him. I gave him a second chance in Scrubs and I fell in love with him! Scrubs got me through medical school and residency!
This is my favorite episode, love Zack, on one level with Kevin Smith, great episode as well.
Need to rewatch scrubs again
Wow he got to direct Morgan Freeman thats just awesome.
i love him in chicken little
Yesssss
The sky is falling
Speaking of productions that’ve made me cry;
When you were in “Smallville” and your father had you committed. The shot was of you suffering in that horrid place with your father watching you through (what I assumed was) a two way mirror. Then they played the Johnny Cash version on “Hurt”. I-BALLED. I mean, full on, ugly face cry, balled.
I used to hope for Zach and Donald to guest together on Psych.
Wow. Zach is a huge get. I love FDRF podcast. Just started listening. Zach is great to listen to, ehen he doesn't have to rein in Donald. Lol.
Thanks for the upload.
52:00 "Do something every day that sucks." Mate, that's everyone who has a job they hate. We get eight solid hours of that shit! 🙂
Gotta remind Zach about what his patient said in scubs.
Even if it’s just taking the time to lie in the grass and think about all the things you still have left to do.
I know have a list of movies and shows to watch. Thanks guys!
Never seen Scrubs, but I really enjoyed this conversation! One of my favorite episodes
I haven't had an ad yet? that's weird! great interview so far!
Seems like a good man.. good interview. Thanks
I even like Zach in that cheaper by the dozen remake with Gabrielle union as his wife.
Ooooh this is gonna be good!
Thank you for this.
Much love from South Africa.
Never actually been a fan of his but I have loved his latest projects. I've also never seen him interviewed before and he seemed really down to earth and nice.
Great episode 👏🏻 👍🏻
Its would be cool to get michael in as a guest if they do a scrubs limited reboot
Everybody loves Garden State and Scrubs, but Wish I Was Here is one of my favorite movies!
I just listen to this Episode yesterday I was at the doctors going over surgery, got you a few more listener to the podcast while I was there. Didn’t realize my headset wasn’t working oops 😬 😊 loved the Episode you Rock Michael!!
Michael, THANK YOU for having Zach Braff on your show❤
Missed opportunity for a perfect Nord VPN segment about the movie not being accessible in the us
This episode was a hand blast!!
great actor, great episode !
Garden State the movie and soundtrack is something that has stuck with me since it came out, I was 19 at the time and something about just hit and started with me. I know Zach said about "Wish I was here" that movie and soundtrack is also another one, it always gets to me. The one movie of his that is also my favorite and also has an amazing soundtrack is "The Last Kiss" he was great in that as well and he just makes you feel what his character is dealing with in that movie. Overall a great episode , I enjoyed watching and listening, oh yeah just one thing I wish you guys would have talked about is music because from the soundtracks to his movies he has a great taste in music and thanks to him I was out onto a lot of different artists, Rosie you have great taste in music as well, so I feel that's something you guys really could have had a conversation about. Thanks again, can't wait for next week's.
I've got "The Comeback Trail" Zac is awesome in that movie 🥰
I'll never forget the episode of Punk'D where he got Sooooo pissed and this kid for spray painting his car! 😂😂 Dude was livid haha then Ashton comes out...classic episode!
But scrubs was quite possibly one of the best damn shows of its time. Bar none. Loved it..and can still watch it today.
I loved scrubs
ahhh love JD from scrubsss
Who else remembers him in chicken little?
Very happy that you’ve received the talented Zach again, Michael, fascinating IOU, thank you so much 💙💙💯 , Ryan 💖🙌 !!
Braff and Dax Shepard need to do a movie together. They have similar characteristics to me.
watched The Comeback Trail (in Canada); really enjoyed it
Great episode!!
Such a great guest 👌 thank you Michael 😊
Exorcist III is the top of my list as well. Watched it twice in the theater back during release. The sheers scene freaks me out even today when I know it's coming. Not a big fan of jump scares, but that scene was expertly crafted. Brad Dourif is fun as Chucky, but in Exorcist III he was freakin' brilliant.
Garden State was very similar to my life as it is right now. I saw it when it first came out and bought it on DVD and it was fantastic but mirrors what's going on in my life today. Fantastic Movie.
Thanks to Rosey, Ryan and Zach! 🎙
Really liked Garden State and Going in Style. Both such lovely movies.
I could listen to Michael do a whole show as Morgan Freeman. Fuck, i loved that!😅
Where are the timestamps?
聽到終端機叫人不要行來行去呀!
Michael 'Midroll' Rosenbaum
I love these podcasts, but boy do I find myself wishing they were timestamped into chapters!
Ripley is sooo good!
Starts at 3m 55s your welcome
Майкл Розенбаум 🤣🤣🤣😁😁😁👍👍👍
How "Good Person" isn't up for an Academy Award is BS. Those other pictures that were up this year paled in comparison. Great work Zach. Much love from Jersey!
Wish I was Here was great. I'm due for rewatch.
What a lovely guy
MSG for a Rangers game ! Cant beat it !
Other than my best friend who is a horror movie buff, nobody else has ever loved Exorcist 3 like me. You guys have great taste.
Another awesome guest 💙🤘
The Comeback Trail blu ray is available in Australia and if you and zack are interested id be happy to send yous a copy each.
Good interview.
I checked three times to see if he was writing ZACH BRAFF or if I was hallucinating. I was so happy that I will watch it tonight (it is 17:42 in Istanbul) with a quality bourbon, otherwise I would not have been able to do justice to this conversation.
I don't know why but would love to see a movie with Ken Jenkins Morgan Freeman directed by Zach Braff ,i know its a odd combo (great name for a movie btw) but allways thought it's a pitty theese two legends haven't to my knowledge shared screen just once :)
The ads in this are increasingly feeling like something you would see on an Alex Jones show. Starting to creep me out.
I enjoyed garden state I do miss scrubs
I need that cap in my life.
Hey Judy is on the Podcast....😂
We're going stake night🎶We're going eat it right🎶🤓🍖
By the way, are these this janitor Shorts JD wear?!😂
I want to meet Zach on the street…run up to him and yell “eaggggglleeeee”
Sorry I STILL think Scrubs is the funniest show that was on tv. Rivaled by only Brooklyn Nine Nine
Gosh I find both unfunny😮
I never got into either. I tried, but I just never took to them.
@@TheRetroManRandySavage are you from UK? We have different humour. I don’t find the Simpson funny either! Friends I do..hilarious laugh out loud but family guy, Simpson etc nope they just don’t get a laugh from me!
@@darnitthelma4247 Yeah, I'm from the UK.
I never liked the Simpsons either.
Well, not since my youth.
Love the arcade game though, lol.
Friends was ok. It was funny enough. I'd watch it if it was on, but I wouldn't call myself a fan.
Seinfeld, Cheers, Taxi, 3rd Rock from the sun, and Frasier were/are the American sitcoms I still like to watch.
@@TheRetroManRandySavage oh I loved the Simpson on my Nintendo (I still have it…sad 42 year old mum I am apparently 😕😂)
But yes friends, fraiser, cheers, Roseanne still make me belly laugh 😃
Somebody has had some work done!
You draw.
TRIANGLE , don't draw! they are the got!
Michael Rosenbaum, do you like the idea of doing a sequel to Smallville called Metropolis, where it follows Superman's early career, similar to how Smallville followed Clark's journey?
Zach was great. He had it right about the career advice. (paraphrasing) If you aren't going balls out...there are thousands that are. It may not be applicable to every profession, but ones I am familiar with, athletics, programming, analysis... it is exactly right. But I am sorry to say, it is still very hard. lol :(
ZACH!
Sometimes when I think I don't like someone it takes an interview like this to make me put my bias away and admire them. Not a fan of Zach or Scrubs, but this was a very good episode. I promise I'm not a total bitter bish! 😉
This is the most likeable/least contrived I've seen him be.
Michael can you please have Lori Petty on your podcast?
Seems so wildly sensible for someone who spends time in Hollywood.
