I have never driven on a track because it looks too intimitating. The higher gear advice, coming from a racing legend is extremely valueable. Simple but valueable. Thank you, Mr. Tsuchiya.
Neither have I but the simulator gives me a lot of confidence. Also trying basic concepts on street cars just to understand weight transfer thru brake, throttle and steering input improved my confidence for that day I get to go on track. I don't condone any dangerous driving but just simply ways of understanding how each input makes the car behave on turn in, exit and straights . My best tool on UA-cam is the Driver61 channel. Study all of his teachings... God bless.
Usually for first-timers, instructors DO recommend you to drive in 3rd gear only (same for my motorcycle track class). There's a lot going on to take in regarding just the track itself, so the more you can ignore about the car, e.g. gear, rpm, etc, the better. Focus on just getting comfy driving around w/o having to fuss with other things inside the car.
As always, quite nice. I remember my first lap in Nürburgring (tourist), I was so excited that 1 minute after start I forgot 80% of the 100+ laps I had driven on videogame and I was driving on eyesight only. So frightening, but at the same time so cool. Then, for next laps, yes, heartbeat reduced and memory came back a bit more
Now that I think about it, taking it slow and making sure to be safe was how I learned to drive in the first place so it makes sense to take that approach on the circut too rather than going all out and probably having a crash.
Mr. Tsuchiya is my fav racing driver by far. Always entertaining, informative, and still enjoys the ride after all these years. And on top of all, he seems to be down to the ground. Great driver and it seems a great person as well.
Woooo gonna watch this religiously Omg a heart again thank you so much. If I may ask mr. Tsuchiya. Do you have any tuning tips for an aspiring hachiroku owner? Specifically ae-86 I’m a massive fan and your a huge inspiration to me
@Ryan Wing Wo This is a great advice upgrading the fluids like oil, coolant and brake fluids. But i realised this late my engine over heated and brake vaccum gone not sure whether brake vaccum gone due to not using proper fluid but good to have.
His definition of rythm is your heart beat... This will slow you to properly brake release and shift into a smoother transition into the Apex A former race student
Thank you for the translation! I struggle with understanding more instructional Japanese, so it was very helpful. I'm sure this information will also help on the track :)
This is a great video for people totally new to driving on a track, or if you've been doing it for years. It's always great to get a fresh look at the fundamentals. Keiichi always has some great advice to give.
Hey guys, at around 18:19, he mentioned that he lowered his final gear ratio. I'm just curious why he opted for a lower final gear when the car naturally lacks torque? Does this mean DK's preferred set up is a GT86 with low torque but higher top-speed? Is this the ideal set up for a track oriented GT86? Thanks guys!
Driver position is the most difficult for me. In my 86, the seat is all the way back and with the wheel as close as possible, I still risk kicking it when using heel and toe
You know there was never a video from anyone teaching track etiquette. Also a guide for noobies to understand the other type of drivers on the track. Yes you can be thought to drive in fastest lines and all. But only in ideal conditions and when you are alone. But real world situation means there would be many people on the track and you are just playing dodgeball with people driving faster and angrier than you.
True. All it takes is one or two pricks to cause a red flag and misery to all drivers. I wouldn’t attend a track session unless there are mandatory etiquette briefings before the track opens.
"But real world situation means there would be many people on the track and you are just playing dodgeball with people driving faster and angrier than you." Unless you have driven several track days to the point that the group you signed up with allows you to pass anywhere on the track, this is not true. You are not in a competition. Instead, you are just out in the track and have a good time. The first couple times you head for a track day, you will only be allowed to pass on designated long straights when the person in front "point-by" you to pass them. Where and how you can pass will be mentioned in the driver's meeting. If the person ahead of you is holding you up, he/she will be blue flagged, black flagged if they hold you up for too long. Once you have more experience, you can move up to the next group where you can pass without "Point-by" at certain places. If you can demonstrate you can pass and tell people to pass you safely after a couple dozen track days, you may be approved to drive with passing anywhere on a track.
@@stubbarn Yes, as a drift technique ai knew of it, but on straight line after exiting a corner... I.suppose it is just to give a little "bump" on the powerband, I don't know if it has so real effect, as while the clutch is pressed the engine doesn't push the tyres (although that is an instant, fraction of a second, I don't if it pays for it). On turbo'd cars or big displacement NA cars, with more torque and accelerative power out of corners, no need to do anything
Happy New Year Tsuchiya san! Excellent strategies in approaching a new track!! I will try your advice & hopefully be able to shave off .001-.500 seconds on track. Here's some drifting since you incorporated some during your time attack!->ua-cam.com/video/zUN8ayoY8fk/v-deo.html

Tsuchiya is like a father to all of us, teaching us how to love cars and how to get to love Circuit driving and not be afraid of it. Thank you!
I guess I won't be lonely during new year's eve. A wonderful way to start 2022 with DK's new video

Keiichi "DK" Tsuchiya
I've been watching videos with Tsuchiya-san for 25+ years and I'm still learning new stuff.
Me too since JGTC....He gets better and better each year.
The reflexive clutch kick around 16 minutes in was glorious. Long live the King!
I have been waiting for this for so long. I’m so excited! 😁

Great video! I loved the foot camera, I actually now understand how to downshift while braking into the corner with that heel and toe.

I think he mentioned in another video that it was a 4.5 final drive, thats probably what he meant
Thank you for the video DK and Carprime!! Very helpful!!!
His driving is pure art
@3min48sec.
I agree
I would down shift to third gear with brake control to keep from under rev to handle the apex exit...

Seems like another Drift Bible again but grippier. Religious stuff

Awesome I'm more consistence in Asseto Corsa Competizone after this vid.
Jackie Stewart always says the same thing, go one gear higher and the car will be less nervous

Great video. How did he get a lap timer on the entertainment system?
Imagine some dude in a Porsche didn't know they were filming and starts bullying the Slow beginner car driven by Tsuchiya.... Eurobeat Intensifies.
15:58, why clutch kick? I think I have seen it in some other hot version video. Is that to mitigate a bit low engine torque entering a straight?
It could also be used to provoke the rear tyres into a spin.

I'm pretty sure he just clutch kicked out of habit to drift lol. Hard habit to beat when you're DK.
to keep the revs from dropping
Finished watching this and now I can go against expert AI on Assetto Corsa
"On track" yeaaaa about that
What shoes is he wearing? I like the lowcut for driving
sempai is the best sensei
Why is he breaking right in the corner? I thought the best way is breaking when wheels are heading forward so you can easily transfer weight.
Just noticed he has his blood type and Rh on his belt.
This is the equivalent of Tom Brady teaching you how to throw a spiral.

Is the DK wearing a Richard Mille?! That’s insanely baller.
Anyone know the model?
Looks like it isn't an RM. Potentially a Cvstos Challenge. Also looks like he has been wearing it for a few years! Very cool.
He kicked the clutch lmaoo
👍

Holy shit he got old....
