I wish people talked more about how the Aborigines were abused and colonized along with the cruel injustices that they faced--by the Dutch, Japanese, and Chinese. My father was born and raised in Taipei and he said that he wasn't taught about how the indigenous people were oppressed. They deserve to have their history and struggle be fully represented.

I am a Native American, so from my point of view, the first " foreigner intrusions" were the Han Chinese settlers and then the Manchurian Empire. ( That's why the Han called the indeginious people "barbarian" in other words foreign.) The Dutch were the third after the Manchurians. Indeginious Formosans are Austronesian. Not Sinitic ( Chinese) or Tungusic/ Altaic ( Manchurian) . Related to Filipinos, Malays, and other pacific islanders. No linguistic or cultural relationship to Han Chinese. I was listening to this as I was in Chinatown getting a haircut. The barber spoke to me in Chinese she said, "I was not sure if you were a foreigner or not" . I was smiling and I answered back in Chinese with a smile " How can I be a foreigner? I was born in America. I'm a Native indeginious American. You are the lao why". To us Navajo, everyone is a "lao why". We both laughed. Han hegemony because of the language is insidious. People will call you a lao why on your own native land. Much like they have assumed the mantle and distinctiveness of the Manchurian Empire and relegated them into an internal ethnicity. The autonomy and distinctiveness of the native Taiwanese is relegated to only being a chapter in Han Chinese history. Would love to hear the Native Taiwanese perspective. I studied Chinese in Taiwan by the way, and the Han Chinese there always treated me like I was a "Hua Chiao". Fond memories.

"The Kingdom of Bulou" all over the country desperately resisted the invasion of the Qin Dynasty, but it was ultimately defeated. After the fall of Qin, the "King of Fulou" was free again, but the time limit was short. Soon Liu Bang's army invaded the border of the Kingdom of Fulou. Due to the great disparity in power, the "Kuo Lou Kingdom" was defeated again and became a dependent country of the Han Dynasty, and was renamed "Min Yue Kingdom". Very interesting! My family have been in Taiwan since at least before the 1850's. We always thought we were 100% ethnically Han but my family recently took a DNA test and found lots of Southeast Asian DNA and even a bit of middle eastern. Anyone from Taiwan found such anomalies?

Don't think this is an anomaly. There is an old Taiwanese saying, 「有唐山公,無唐山媽」, which means your ancestry from male side may come from China, but female side may come from indigenous people. This is due to the fact that early immigrants from China were mostly males. Also due to Taiwan's history in the 17th century, it is not surprising that some Taiwanese has foreign (i.e., non-Asian) DNA. I do not know about middle eastern specifically though.

Japan did not cede Taiwan to the Republic of China. They simply gave up their claim to sovereignty over Taiwan. No treaty or international agreement has settled the question of sovereignty over Taiwan. The United States gave the Republic of China administrative control over Taiwan, but this arrangement was something like a trusteeship.

Truth be told the Han (aided by my countrymen, the VOC) robbed the Taiwanese aboriginals of their demographics. A part of them were assimilated and the other lived in primitive conditions in the mountains, where obviously birth rates will be low compared to the Han farms in the plains of Taiwan. The VOC respected the Chinese (and Japanese) as "fellow civilized peoples", and they brought Han settlers over because they were known to be hard working, industrious and good merchants. You can easily imagine a completely native Taiwan with a 20-30 million population like today, if perhaps one of the lowland tribes came into contact with foreign technology and then conquered and fortified the coasts. Or perhaps if instead of the Qing, a western power kept control. It might have been like a smaller Philippines. I can recommend a fun and accurate book on the VOC/Koxinga period of Taiwan: Lord of Formosa.
Thanks for the book recommendation. The story of the pre-Han years are fascinating and I hope to write more about in the future. The link between Taiwan and the Netherlands is interesting and I hope to write more in the future about it as well.

A more correct history of Taiwan after WWII is: Japan didn't cede Taiwan to Republic of China. Japan simply gave up its ruling of Taiwan. Since it's USA that defeated Japan, there were three legal options for Taiwanese then: 1. As the winner, USA took Taiwan as its nrely obtained territory. 2. Taiwan became a country by itself. 3. If Taiwanese didn't want to make their own country, they should be given a vote to determine which country they want to be part of. Unfortunately USA didn't want to take a new land and didn't bother to let Taiwanese decide their own fate (a moral mistake). Instead USA just asked Republic of China "take care of" Taiwan. And ROC took care of Taiwan by slaughtering tens of thousands Taiwanese (most of them highly educated elites) in the first two years, followed by decades of martial law rules that again excecuted or prisoned tens of thousands. This less known (to western people) history of Taiwan explains why Taiwanese don't have very fond feeling towards China. It's very much like how Ukrainian feel about Russian.

For the narrator, the word Aborigine is latin in root and you need to pronounce the 'e' at the end "/ˌabəˈrijənē/". Might as well use 'Indigenous' instead which is in vogue today. The Polynesian languages have their root from Taiwan's indigenous peoples, shown by linguistic analysis. Also, peoples have been crossing the Taiwan Strait for tens of millenia, since human migration had many peoples crossing the Taiwan Strait, where long distance ocean going vessels and navigation were devised within the safety of the large waterway. Chinese history shows exploration in the 3rd century CE. If it were left to the western world to deal with the indigenous peoples, they would had ended up only on Penghu, just as Ni'ihau is a indigenous reserve within the Hawaiian group of islands. The push of Christianity onto the indigenous everywhere in the world has profound negative effects on how they exist now.
Left up to the western world. From what read, the Dutch seemed more sympathetic than the Chinese and Japanese. The indigenous people on Taiwan are less than 10%. Similar the Ainu in Japan, who at one time were the ruling class till the Chinese arrived in Japan. Seems the Japanese and Chinese colonizers behave exactly the same as Western or middle Eastern colonizers. And for the Christian. Christians are the only reason natives exist anywhere the Western merchants went. If it wasn’t for missionaries who went along, the merchants would have enslaved or killed everyone, because that’s the nature of merchants. If you want to see real religious damage, look at Malaysia. The Muslims to this day force the women to wear layers of cloths covering their whole body in the super hot humid climate while working.

In a nut shell the aboriginal peoples of Formosa are the various tribes of the aboriginal peoples of Northern Vietnam, Laos and the "Cantonese" speakers of southern "pre China", called the NAAMAN. They ranged as far North as Shanghia, but by Genocide by the Han were chased out of China in what would become Viet Nam (Naaman) and onto Formosa aka Taiwan. From there they spread north to Okinawa ( becoming the "dark skinned population" of Japan) and also south as the Aboriginal population of the Philippines. From both Formosa East "island hopping" these people became what we refer to and the Polynesian people spreading as far east as Eastern Islands and South Anerica. The question is... does the Japanese aborigines are also in some kind of bloodline with the Taiwanese ones as well? And also, why does PRC not recognise these people? Is it because, they assume that they should or ought to be related to the Siberian Hans Manchurian bloodlines, or do they not actually assume that, they are aborigines? Cos if China claims aborigines... THEN.. what does that mean then ? The current people are not "chinese"... but the genuine "real chinese" were the aboriginals ?....Cos the current day "hans" are basically a mixed race individual... from all sorts of races. Actually. (And some of the "causians" were from the Ottoman Empire as well... which are classified as Turkic today.. however.. its roots are from the Eastern European areas as well.. and ties back into like the Greeks.... !!) Indigenous peoples in what is now called Taiwan are NOT 1% of the population. The numbers will continue to grow as state recognition of the Siraya comes into effect, as mandated by the courts, Cheers, Guy
When I watched the “warriors of rainbow” movie, the Taiwanese tribes and it reminded me of my native tribes in Southeast Asia. My ancestors were from the South china and they migrate there to the Southeast Asia and they arrival somewhere during 7th century and they settled in apart of Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and south Vietnam. They used to colonized by the largest dynasty, Britain empire and Japanese empire, including nowadays they were occupied by the communist regime in their land.
Technically the ancestors of the Igolot or Igorot people in Philippines are from Formosa Island the dress tradition culture are the same and historically the people in Philippines are Austronesian they come from Permosa ( Taiwan today) island to Malaysia Indonesia before the Han people go to the permosa
People are so obsessed with black white relations in America but really indigenous people, especially in the global south, have been encroached by light skinned northern races. You can see this in Taiwan, the Phillipines, India, Africa, Cambodians, etc...the original populations were dark and some very very dark
There is, indeed, much more that needs to be done to improve the lot of indigineous peoples in most nations of the world and in Taiwan you can find openness and willingness to discuss their achievements and challenges ahead. By contrast, the secrecy of the China CCP authoritarian regime's deeply disturbing persecution, genocide and organ theft of non-Han minorities in China today, is stark. Crimes against millions in the minorities like the Tibetans, Uighur and Mongolians have been documented with great difficulty and condemned by The UN Human Rights Commission and Amnesty International in 2021. The China ultra-nationalist authoritarian regime refuses to cooperate with investigations into their heartbreakingly cruel behaviour. Although a contemporary contrast of indigenous and minority treatment between the democratic nation of Taiwan and rather vile and secretive authoritarian China CCP shouldn't be framed to excuse the challenges still facing Taiwan's indigenous peoples, it can nevertheless also provide some regional perspective.
Because the majority of "Formosans" are mixed race with Fujianese. Single men who came as laborers on the island during the Qing Dynasty married island women.
It's too bad that the imperial Japanese were unable to fully colonize the island and in the process fully free Taiwan from Han Chinese rule as it should be noted they were the catalyst in initial attempts but now that the Chinese have a big organized military fleet... it's back to being subservient to the Han.
This was an outstanding and unique episode. Strangely, it lacked Asianomety's usual smooth, deliberate style, almost as if someone had a gun to his head.

A more correct history of Taiwan after WWII is:
Japan didn't cede Taiwan to Republic of China. Japan simply gave up its ruling of Taiwan. Since it's USA that defeated Japan, there were three legal options for Taiwanese then:

The natives of the Americas had no immunity to dirty eurasian diseases that arose from urban living
With the introduction of those residential schools in Canada some hundred years ago it did a lot of harm to culture as it was a way to force First Nation children into European culture and society making many forget their own language and culture
Aborigine is pronounced like "a-bo-ridge-uh-nii".
Otherwise great video. I'm intrigued now. Subscribed.
Indigenous is more appropriate. "Aborigine" is a bit of a slur
Can you imagine how the CCP will oppress these indigenous people in Taiwan? All the more reason to keep Taiwan independent.
The whole island will get flattened if anyone tries to intervene. The u.s. even threatened to air strike the chip factories themselves if p.r.c "invade." Which is very odd to even think about because the u.s. officially recognizes Taiwan as a part of China yet at the same time backhandedly sends weapons and even worse an uninvited Nancy Pelosi. This would be like China sending diplomats to instigate and weapons to Texas behind the U.S. back but to its face saying oh yes Texas is a part of the U.S. of course. The multi layered long distance air defence system on the coast of the P.R.C. is literally bristling with obscene amounts missiles/artillery. Not only would the island and people end up getting anialated, but we could also expect to lose several aircraft carriers full of u.s. sailors. And then what we sustain a war thousands of miles away from us directly on another super powers coast? It's not worth it everyone loses but especially the ppl of Taiwan and the U.S. navy. Pretty sure most Taiwanese dont want to end up as another Ukraine being used as a sacrificial proxy Fronteir fortress/battering ram.
So Taiwan is not china
It is not
Taiwan belongs to the aboriginal Taiwanese
Very good short doc. Thanks for the good work!
Paiwan people never been Chinese though -.- the majority of Chinese people grew over in Taiwan during the communist and democrat war in china .. fact !!
It's absolutely sickening that the aboriginals/indigenous are never or rarely even mentioned when discussing the Taiwanese/ Chinese situation!!!!
Your channel is a god send, these are the kind of topics we love to here about, the less frequently mentioned
Look up " Harlem to China: One Woman's Quest to Find Her Family " on yT.
Insightful......
The roots of the island peoples of the Pacific and even to Madagascar go back to at least some of the peoples of Taiwan. For example, counting from 1-10 and terms for mother and father in the Paiwan language are pretty easily recognizable to speakers of Polynesian, Micronesian, and Filipino languages. In relatively “recent” times (1970-ish), one of our traditional (= no navigation instruments) canoes from Satawal in the Caroline Islands voyaged to nearby Okinawa, kind of a visit back to the motherland area, for Ocean Expo ‘75.
You missed a great opportunity to identify the indigenous Taiwanese as the ancestors of the Polynesian people.
Fun fact President Tsai Ing-Wen is 1/4 Paiwanese
Tsai's grandmother was Paiwanese from Shizi, Pingtung.
Add Hakka too lol
Historical cause
At that time, the Xia Dynasty had not been established, and there was no concept of a country. Before the Xia Dynasty, some brown races in Fujian developed slowly, and the Central Plains culture did not involve the Fujian region. Around the Spring and Autumn Period, the first slavery country, the "Kuo Lou Kingdom", was established in Fujian. Until the early years of the Qin Dynasty, after the Qin destroyed Chu and Yue, it continued to invade the Fujian region. At that time, the southernmost point of the Yue Kingdom was Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province, and further south was the category of the "Bulou Kingdom". "The Kingdom of Bulou" all over the country desperately resisted the invasion of the Qin Dynasty, but it was ultimately defeated. Part of the brown race fled to Taiwan, and the remaining "Gulou citizens" accepted the subsidiary rule of the Qin Dynasty.
In the period of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Minyue State was abolished and became a county. Since then, Minyue State has been destroyed and became part of the Han Dynasty.
In order to disintegrate the survivors of Fujian and Vietnam, Emperor Wu of the Han killed their nobles and elders. Some of the survivors fled to the Taiwan area, while the remaining part was isolated by the northern races, and finally disappeared in the Fujian area due to various reasons. This is why modern Fujianese contain a large amount of O3 in the north and a small part of O2 in Baiyue, but not M1 and M2 in the South Island.
Today's Fujianese belong to the yellow race, the descendants of the fusion of the northern Han and Baiyue people, but not the descendants of the Austronesians. The Austronesians belong to the brown race or the brown white race, and their genetics are different from the modern Fujianese.

The people are dying on that island. Their l;anguage and culture are almost gone.
Warrior of the rainbow is a movie about the Taiwan aboriginal
You did another video on it, but it's important to mention that Taiwan is the Proro-Austronesian homeland, making the aborigines a hugely important culture on the world stage.
taiwan was connected to china - every one every thing on taiwan belong to china - taiwan aborigines are tribal chinese not han chinese
Some Indonesian people share same DNA with indigenous people of Taiwan.
Now they have 3nm chips
The original inhabitants of Formosa/Taiwan are Austronesians.

Proto Polynesian a Malay origin
Customs, traditions and even language in pre-historic Taiwan resemble those in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.
the Taic peoples come from ancient proto-austronesian. the proto-austronesians just left the continent earlier and so in china, they remember Taic speakers since those persisted later and spread further to indochina peninsula
lmao, han tribe calling austronesian tribe lazy. typical han.
austronesian people laid-backness seems to be genetic. really interesting.

Any body has a story regarding native Taiwan sailing outside from Taiwan before anybody sailing.
Check a dictionary for the pronunciation of 'aborigine.'
How come the aboriginal Taiwanese is almost the same as the people living in Luzon Philippines?
Austronesian
many taiwanese aboriginals are the ancestors of filipinos and other countries in south east asia
Maybe the aboriginal Taiwanese and the aboriginal Filipinos of Northern Philippines are of the same tribe since Taiwan which is used to be Formosa Island is so close to Northern Philippines in which you can see it on a clear day.
"Austronesian" just search it. That's the correct term. It explains why people in the Pacific Island nations look the same.
@@kapitansino9718 well look similar i wouldn't say the same.
If China fights to reclaim Taiwan, will life become better for the indigenous people of Taiwan?
probably not. They lose either way tbh
The indigenous people of Taiwan are more pro pan Chinese party than the separatist party in elections . But the Hokkien Chinese dominate in numbers.
so many asean peoples doesnt know they come from taiwan. 🤣🤣🤣
One of the greatest legacies of the researxh done on the human genome is the discovery that none of us quite appreciates how diverse our ancestry actually is.
Fun fact: Xinhua News (Chinese State Media) forbids the use of the name "aborigines" or "indigenous" (原住民) on their press and recommends "Taiwanese ethnic minorities" instead. That is because the official discourse of the CCP denies Taiwanese aborigines are Austronesian, claiming they are descendants of the "Chinese homo erectus", therefore "Taiwan is tied to China on flesh and blood".

!!) Becareful what you wish for !
Indigenous peoples in what is now called Taiwan are NOT 1% of the population.

¿What of the aboriginal population in the ROC standing military? (See FLY INTO THE SKY by the Air Force Tiger Band!)
People are so obsessed with black white relations in America but really indigenous people, especially in the global south, have been encroached by light skinned northern races. You can see this in Taiwan, the Phillipines, India, Africa, Cambodians, etc...the original populations were dark and some very very dark
Show me the document and quote where Japan ceded Taiwan to ROC, please.
Wow..... best historical aspect of Taiwan and near Canton that I have ever seen....
The pronunciation of aborigines is not correct. Aboriginees is more phonetically correct.
I dont see the same outrage in the comments towards the Chinese who colonized Taiwan and displaced the natives as the Dutch merchants. Why is that?
Because the majority of "Formosans" are mixed race with Fujianese. Single men who came as laborers on the island during the Qing Dynasty married island women.

It's too bad that the imperial Japanese were unable to fully colonize the island and in the process fully free Taiwan from Han Chinese rule as it should be noted they were the catalyst in initial attempts but now that the Chinese have a big organized military fleet... it's back to being subservient to the Han.
