Ben Johnson was a real cowboy before he ever became an actor and was true to his roots in every film he made.
in addition to Tom Mix, Chill Wills, or even Woody Strode.
Tom I have to say it is a travesty that he was left off of this list or any other list champion rodeo cowboy and all around perfect movie cowboy. Worked with every director of any prominence and proved his equestrian skills in every moview.
Yup, in one of those John Ford/Duke cavalry epics Johnson rides Roman style on two horses simultaneous, one foot on each standing up, at speed. That's no stuntman, that's all Ben Johnson.
God love all these other guys, know I do, but they can't cowboy like that.
Absolutely

I have to say the "Mildly Annoyed" cowboy, Clint Eastwood, is my favorite of this list.
They forgot Yosemite Sam who is the rootinist tootinist cowboy in the West, East, North, and South.
As "the" duck I agree.
The original Sam Elliott
Nice one ,Ya Varmint!
I'll say, the only cowboy I've ever seen that could ride a camel or dragon as well. A hat tip to you sir!
@@billbennett9537 And he's indestructible too.
Lee Van Cleef most frequently appeared in spaghetti western.. And he made it worth to watch..
De acordo.
He was great, he is in a movie where he doesn't even talk and he stole the show lol. They didn't give him any lines, he was supposed to be the main caracter but they wanted him to preform plastic surgery to change his nose, which he refused. The man could speak with his eyes.
Lee Van Cleef deserve without a doubt to be on top, no matter what movies he plays in, he is a COWBOY, I like him in every western he ever made, Good or Bad guy, my top one will be For a Few Dollars More, Unforgettable! It doesn’t take anything away from the Bad. My second favorite of his roles.
I totally agree - For a Few Dollars More was superb, got to be my fav western of all time. LVC was simply superb in it, he set the pace and was the driving force behind the key decisions throughout. His presence was electric. When he lit that match on the Humpback's shoulder - high drama in the saloon..!
Big Gundown, imo his best.
Excellent list but you did forget the top cowboy of all cowboys, Mr. Yakima Canutt. A rodeo star, a stunt man who working with John Wayne developed the proper fight scene and also figured out how to do horse stunts that didnt hurt the horses. Even became a 2nd director in many movies
Tim, did you work at Ghost Town in The Sky?
From THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE to SONG OF NORWAY! (Watch for scenes with racing buggies or chariots--that's the Yakima Canutt touch!)
I would give this ten 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Canutt staged and directed the chariot race in "Ben Hur".
John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Roy Rogers, Audie Murphy, Randolph Scott, Gary Cooper, Sam Elliott, James Stewart, Texas Ritter
My personal favorite cowboy actor was a real cowboy, Ben Johnson
One of my favorites as well.
He's been in so many great westerns as well as the old timer Edgar Buchanan. That old Coot had a part in more westerns I believe than anybody. Uncle Joe sure made his rounds that's for sure. But Ben Johnson was a true cowboy actor through and through.
Definitely a great cowboy! "The Wild Bunch" is one of mu all time favourite movies.
Randolph Scott is definitely one of the top 5 for me. I have respect for Lee Van Cleef - he was really excellent.
"You'd do it for Randolph Scott!"
The fact that Randy Scott was widely reported as gay doesn't invalidate his legitimacy as a cowboy (even if he really wanted to ride side-saddle)
@@stephenryder1995 He ser bed during World War Teo, which is more than one of these five can say!
@@jamesmichalek5406 5 Italian, 4 to young, 3 to old injured and still worked for the film Corp, 2 to young, 1 to young
@@jefflooper6179 Italian? Dutch, with a name like Van Cleef, but so what?
Lee Van Cleef is one of my all time favorites. Death Rides a Horse is probably my all time favorite western. And a lot of that is due to Van Cleef. He gets to be the hero for once and he's a stone cold badass in that flick. I don't know how many times I've seen it but it hasn't been enough..
I agŕee lee van cleef is one of the best
My favorite Lee Van Cleef movie was The Stranger and The Gunfighter, lol
Audie Murphy
I'd like to add some honorable mentions....
James Garner for "Support your local Sheriff" and "Maverick"
Yul Brynner for "The Magnificent Seven" and "Westworld"
Eli Wallach for "The Good The Bad and The Ugly" and "The Magnificent Seven"
Robert Redford and Paul Newman for "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"
The entire cast of "Silverado" Damn..that was a great Western....
Maybe not the most prolific Cowboy actors, but the few films they made were really good.
And you can add Kevin Costner especially for his work with Yellowstone
You missed some partner: Gary Cooper; Randolph Scott; Joel McCrae I would put those three ahead of some of your picks.
While Cooper was a cowboy, Scott & McCrae were not.
Yeah his list leaves out some one great. He has missed some movies. Any guess? Randolph Scott. Better than lowest pick, for top 5.
Joel McCrae was a real cowboy he preferred ranching over acting . But acting paid better .
Joel McCray!
The first time I saw High Noon I was struck by how it was obvious Gary Cooper’s character Will Kane was actually scared and it showed. Which is actually more believable than some westerns where the lead doesn’t have any concern at all. When he threw his badge down at the end I actually cheered. A lot of real true metaphors in that movie. No one wants to help you when you’re outnumbered but wants to be your friend when you’re on top as the victor.
I think ben johnson also deserve a mention here, he's one of the best co-star ever
Sam elliot has the greatest voice for film ever, especially westerns. The Outlaw Josey Wales is my personal favourite western ever.
In Roadhouse when he rolls up on his motorcycle, Sam Elliott is 100% cowboy! Sam you were a personal hero of mine!
RIP BRO!
The best cowboy actor was Ben Johnson. He was a cowboy in the first place and a rodeo champion. Acted in many John Ford and Peckinpah movies. You can’t be more cowboy than him.
touche - absolutement!
Slim Pickens was a real cowboy. In his teens he defied his father and entered a rodeo competition. In order to not be found out he asked the lady taking all the entry forms for any suggestions for a fake name. She said Well it’s Slim Pickens around here. He may never have played the leading role. The rest where actors but you could tell he was the real deal. Plus that drawl and his riding that atom bomb down to his doom is iconic. BTW he won that rodeo.
I liked both a lot, but "The Outlaw Josey Wales" was really great.
The Duke , Ben Johnson , Robert Mitchum , Lee Marvin , Jimmy Stewart , Henry Fonda , Harry Carey .
Gary Cooper
Kirk Douglas, Arthur Kennedy, George Kennedy, Paul Fix, Gabie Hayes, Burt Lancaster, Van Heffernan, Eager Buchan, Richard Widmark, Jack Palance, Allan Ladd, Charles Branson, George Montgomery, Ell Wallace, Grage Palmer, Robert Mitchum, Arthur Hug (bull in Eldorado), Ward Bond, Jack Lord, (Stoney Burke). Antony Quinn, can't think of his first name John Mcintyre. Doug McClure, Leo Gordon,
@@michaelpower4372 All were great not to forget Fess Parker and Buddy .
An excellent list.
A honorable mention for Richard Boone, movies and series, always with classic lines from that time period like against Newman in Hombre.
The Duke,Clint Eastwood,Randolph Scott,Glenn Ford,Audie Murphy
Audie Murphy, real deal
I'm surprised Ol' Walter Brennan's name didn't appear here ... he showed up in 49 Westerns and won three Oscars. I loved him.
And don't forget the TV show The Guns of Will Sonnett! Brennan carried that show. No brag, just fact.
Audie Murphy. Just because he was a real hero, could really shoot and could really ride.
Audie Murphy starred in 45 western movies. Other than the movie
To Hell And Back, he stayed true to the western movie genre. And they were all very entertaining movies.
Good pick for no.1, but you also got actors like Randolph Scott and of course The Duke.
murphy was a drunk and a wife cheater beater...he wasn't in the same class as the others
My all-time personal hero.
Audie Murphy was a true hero, lied about his age to serve in WW2, he was only 16. Can you imagine a nowadays 16 year old doing what he did?
@@carolwarn7497 We don't seem to be producing too many youngsters of his caliber these days. Many don't even know a boy from a girl. So sad.
I can't believe you left out Gary Cooper. Yeah his parentage was a bit aristocratic; however he was raised on a ranch in Montana - Learned to ride at an early age - including relearning to ride following a hip injury in his teens which left him with a distinctive walk AND riding style. To See a great shot of Coop riding a horse, check out The Westerner 1940. Cooper DID deserve the Oscar he received for High Noon; the original story was NOT written by Carl Foreman - and the movie is "unAmerican" only when seen thru the eyes of people who wish to see such. I hate to disagree with you - Yes Lee Van Cleefe was a very good actor. You show him as the most menacing of the men waiting to murder Cooper's character in High Noon. Lee Van Cleef WAS a real hero (to me - a US Navy Retiree) as he served in the US Navy in World War II But he was not (in my opinion) a better actor than Gary Cooper. Cooper was a Good Human Being - a Great Actor (2 Oscars must equal SOMETHING) and if not a true hero (that's debatable check out his children's opinions) He was an Heroic Figure. A Real Cowboy who portrayed Cowboys (as well an many other roles) on screen.
Thank you for all the brilliant information in this comment. I love High Noon. I don't know or care much about the politics around it, all I know is that it's a great story and that themes of honour, duty, revenge and love will outlast any political trends that folks will try to impose on a great story.
He Don't Know Gary Cooper!!..thanks.
WONDERFUL 🏆🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇
High noon
Since I see the western High Noon as a great cowboy story, I didn't see the politics of it. Gary Cooper is great but John Wayne is the best.
They are all great. Among my favorites are Joel McCrea, Randolph Scott, Glen Ford, and Terrence Hill. And Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster. Hondo is my favorite John Wayne movie.
Is this movie who have a dog?
Hondo is one of my favorites too. Great movie
@@mixaliskokkinos1496 yes. And the dog has no name. He just calls him dog.
@@detroitdan8487 Thank you appreciated Greetings from Greece
I was pleasantly surprised to see the great Lee van Cleef at number one: he's a personal favorite of mine. Specifically I love the intelligence that radiates from him, even when he's in a tiny role. Sergio Leone said he wanted Cleef in his movies because Cleef's eyes burned through the screen. A much appreciated number-one.
Personally I would have included Gary Cooper in this mix somewhere: another great cowboy, who was also a deceptively passive actor, bringing out his emotions quietly, stoically, and with conviction. And Walter Brennan, a cowboy from top to toe and a great support for so many of the headliners. He had a good time in a rare leading role as Judge Roy Bean and ran with it.
You just hit the nail of the genre! I've been a great fan of him since I saw "A Few Dollars More" in the theater. I told myself that Van Cleef should be first place, but I really didn't expect he was picked. He is the only cowboy actor who looks good in black Inverness, anyway!
5.Dale Robertson, 4.James Arness, 3.Chuck Conners, 2.Clint Eastwood, 1. John Wayne. Outlaws, 1. Lee Van Cleef, 2.Bruce Dern, 3.Jack Elam, 4.Terrence Hill, 5. Bud Spencer. 2 other greats for the good were hop-a-long Cassidy, and Palliden. Now that would be a MAGNIFICENT 7
I do actually find myself agreeing with you, and may have been tempted to make Eastwood number one. Van Cleef was a legend, had a presence few did, those steely eyes, and he was a great character actor, and - in the Sergio Leone epics especially - he acted out tension, silence and short narratives immaculately
The BEST double act in Westerns was unquestionably Eastwood and Van Cleef. They were outstanding on screen together. My favourite western of all time was actually the second of the Dollars trilogy: For A Few Dollars More. It was great seeing them as competing bounty killers with very different methods and coming from different generations, and then working together to get Indio and his gang. And the soundtrack of that movie I thought was better than The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, with the deep Spanish guitar strumming, the chimes of the pocket watch, etc.
I agree
Number 1 to me was Clint Eastwood..no caps!
@@n0w3lly90Lee van Cleef was only five years older than Clint Eastwood
I watched Richard Widmark last night in The Last Wagon, versatile actor, enjoyed seeing him in a cowboy/Indian role. he made more than fifteen westerns, enjoyed everyone of them.
That was a great movie.
I agree completely!! What a great list! They're all great actors!! Lee Van Cleef is on the top! He's a fantastic actor, I'm a real fan of his!
Lee Van Cleef 👍👍👍
An actor on my personal list would be the late great original 3:10 To Yuma star Glenn Ford.
He was the fastest leather-clearer of a six-gun of any lead actor of his day or perhaps all time. He could out draw the expert who taught Matt Dillon/James Arness how to duel, by the instructor's own admission. Add to that Ford really rode horses and did a little cowboying too, to put it lightly.
That would've been Arvo Ojala. I was involved with pistolero instruction for clueless actors way back then along with him. Its nice to hear from a very RARE person like you, who knows about Glenn Ford. You are 100% correct - Glenn could've outdrawn that preposterous poser, Squint Eastwood any day of the week. And Glenn's horsemanship was something to see as well. All virtually unknown these days, and no surprise this guy didn't report it.
It killed me that it barely made the news when he died.
Burt Lancaster, Gregory Peck, Richard Widmark, RobertTaylor, Charleston Heston, Randolph Scott, Joel Macrea, Kirk Douglass, Gary Cooper ,Glen Ford , Henry Fonda,Allan Ladd, Clark Gable,James Stewart, William Holden, Ben Johnson, Victor Mature! I could go on.
Steve Scafidi You make an excellent point .
Don’t overlook Tom Sellek. He made a bunch of great westerns for TCM back in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Also Robert Duvall
Quigley Down Under is one of my favorites from Tom. Ridiculously underrated.
“Also” Robert Duvall?
He should have made the list!
Interesting point. Does Quiggley Down Under qualify as a Western? I say it does and it's one of the great classics of the genre.
@@irvingthemagnificent it qualifies as much as “The Man From Snowy River” a legendary movie.
Or “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” franchise.
Were either of them real life cowboys though?
Good selection.
For those of us watched these western movies when we were kids and enjoyed them, this video brings fond memories
I don’t think you got it wrong but it’s hard to limit it to just five.
There’s Alan Ladd in Shane and Gary Cooper in High Noon.
nah - he got it wrong
Not to mention Jimmy Stewart.
Yes I 11:33 with the gentleman who said what happened to Alan Ladd and Gary Cooper
Your pics are way too European I realized the spaghetti western kept westerns alive but your pics were on the side of horrible if you leave out Gary Cooper and Alan Ladd you have left out two of the best, high noon and Shane are this list is way too European and filled with way too much spaghetti sorry Clint Eastwood some of the spaghetti Westerns are great your list is bad 11:33
Great mention of Alan Ladd “Shane”
Wyoming west . Even the state license plate has a cowboy buckeroo riding a bucking bronco .
Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday even though it was a one of was iconic!Clint Eastwood had the complete demeanor of a Western gunslinger!Wow just his look was enough !Coolness personified! But Lee Van Cliff was numero Uno period!
Death Rides a Horse. A seriously underrated movie. Haven't seen it for years. Like most great movies these days it usually shown at 2am.
For a great in-depth analysis of "Death Rides a Horse" check out the western review channel here on youtube, "Lonesome Talkers"
Sexy parody
Slim Pickens is the best cowboy star in my pick. He was a bull rider in the rodeo. That was his real name. Slim Pickens was what he made. He got a small in a film and was history.👍.
Great choice!
He has a brother named Easy Pickens who did a little film work.
Not even an honorable mention to Gary Cooper or Audie Murphy, and I feel like the King of the Cowboys, Roy Rogers should have been mentioned. Yes he was a little flashier than many of the others on this list, but growing up he was my idol and someone I wanted to be more like. He told the story of Good vs Evil in a way that young people could understand.
We have to add James Arness and Clint Walker to that list. Great TV western heroes!👍
Finally my boy Cleef getting the love he deserves
Charles Bronson belongs on your list. He was a cowboy or anything else with a passion! Jack Elam was also a cowboy.
Like Bronson,I think he was the flavor of the hottest chilly to western movies to.
I don't think those are even that good, the westerns I mean(my opinion). But outside of that he has done many great movies, my favourite being Hard Times. He comes out of a train beats everybody up, goes back into the train and disapears, almost didn't say anything lol. He had that type of eastern europe strong man bodie aswell, total badass.
@@lordmarshall642 Hey Marco,
I finally got to see the complete Hard Times movie last month after years of different trailers only. I watched it three times in two days. As you said, Total Badass! James Coburn and the rest of the cast were great too. I'm wondering where the hell I was in 1975. Thinking back 47 years I remember now, it was called a 1969 Norton Commando 750S model. Riding hard and and keeping it in perfect riding condition kept me busy as a young man! I still have a Norton but the kick starts are a bit harder than they were in my 20ty's. I wonder if Bronson has any more that I missed? I'll be looking.
I don't have a favorite western actor, because I grew up watching westerns and I love them all.
Robert Duvall was one of the best actors of cowboy movies just saying
You are right! I love Robert Duval. His character in "Lonesome Dove", Captain Augustus "Gus" McCrae is maybe my favourite character in any western.
Lee Van Cleef is a babe
You need to make it a top 10 list and include Joel McCrea, Randolph Scott, Steve McQueen and Audie Murphy!
And Lee Marvin.
My favorite movie cowboys growing up were Roy Rogers, Tim Holt, and John Wayne.
A great cowboy most people forget is James Arness. Definitely one of the best.
You read my mind with Lee Van Cleef .
I fully agree with Lee van Cleef as number one. He had a magnetic charisma that just drew the viewer in. He could convey so much with just his eyes and facial expressions before even opening his mouth to speak. And, yes, his missing finger joint made him even that more believable.
Lee van cliff -----legend cow boy , trurly bad ass!!
I loved Audie Murphy eventhough Randolph Scott was excellent , but my all-time favorite is most definitely the Duke John Wayne
My top 5 Cowboys would be:
1) Clint Eastwood
2) John Wayne
3) Randolph Scott
4) Gary Cooper
5) Lee Van Cleef
that's a solid list
Joel McCrea, Randolph Scott, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Richard Boone, Stuart Whitman, James Agness
I always like Clint Walker he was my hero when I was a little kid! A couple of movies he did that I thought were pretty good "Yellowstone Kelly" and "night of the grizzly"! I also thought his show Cheyenne was pretty good!
As we often do. We over looked actors like Walter Brennan, Audie Murphy, Ben Johnson, Tom Selleck, and Glen Ford who could return his gun to his holster with our looking or fumbling.
Deforest Kelly was a great cowboy/Western actor for playing villians or sidekicks. He was actually going to be cast to reprise his role as Morgan Earp in the Sequel to Gunfight at OK Corrral, however he was doing a certian TV Show at the time and couldn't get free to do the movie. You might have heard of the show...Star Trek.
Kelly himself said in an interview in Starlog Magazine that his favorite roles and movies were his Westerns. He loved the shooting movies outdoors and just the whole Western genre. He also said that playing villians and sidekicks was a lot of fun. He was actually saddened when the Western Movies stopped being made over here.
People forget Kelly's earlier career in westerns. He played the shifty, mean, often cowardly professional gunfighter better than anyone.
The Star Trek episode ‘The Spectre of The Gun’ that had McCoy and Captain Kirk and Mr Spock being forced by aliens to reenact the O.K. Corral gunfight being trapped in the role of the Clantons going up against the Earps and having to use six shooters instead of phasers against them was always an interesting ST episode.
John Wayne personified the cowboy in my lifetime. He was the man we all looked up to as a boy.
That's right ! my choice also John Wayne .. he is the 1 ..
Yep
Clint Eastwood ⭐️
A great don't-give-a-dern attitude, always staring off in a distance, mildly annoyed by the world around him. Never looses his head, he's cool, he's cunning. Doesn't give two hootes what you think of him.
😍💋💘❤💞❤️🔥🔥😘❤💋
I absolutely agree with you he is the baddest of all cowboys ever since he was a young man of 22 what a great actor and a cowboy he played
Hard to make a top 5 list but I would say it's a tossup between John Wayne and Clint Eastwood for the top spot but I'd have to give it to the Duke.
A few of my favorites are Randolph Scott, Audie Murphy, Dale Robertson, Glenn Ford or even Ben Johnson. Too many to name but it's all subjective so no argument from me. Good video👍
Good choice with your top 5, but I have to say is one of my personal favorites, and quite underrated is Ben Johnson....all I can say is, he was the real deal!
I was thinking in my mind when I saw the title: “Lee Van Cleef better be on this freaking list”. Was not disappointed.
The only time I ever saw Clint Eastwood as a cowboy was in "Rawhide." He mostly played gunfighters.
1 Clint Walker 2John Wayne 3 Randolph Scott 4 Robert Mitchum 5 Jimmy Stewart 6 Eric Fleming 7 Clint Eastwood 8Alan Ladd 9 Ben Johnson 10 Lee Van Cleef
dude I like you, I'm Greg, I've been watching westerns since as far back as I can remember 1959 I was born in 57 in march. I grew up on a dairy, my dad was a cow genius who could ride rope and shoot, he new animals and he loved John Wayne, so I think I've seen every JW movie ever made, so growing up I might of been 3 we watched wanted dead are alive, rawhide, and the wagon train, we only had black and white back then but my dad had his own remote, my little brother are me, and before that my big brother, he was born in 52 and a sister born in 53, then me and my little brother Tommy, a year in a half younger than me. sad he passed in July of 2020 lung cancer, ok down to business, I like your top 5 picks but I like mine more. # 5 Steve McQueen #4 Tom Selleck, he rides a horse better than anyone I've ever seen, Quigley down under was a great movie Tom Selleck is a great cowboy, . # 3 John Wayne #2 Charles Bronson, and #1 is Clint Eastwood, he's my guy, when you spoke about his best movies, you left out Josey Wales high plains drifter. my top 5 Clint movies besides the ,3 spaghetti Westerns are #1 pale Rider, #2 unforgiven #3 Josey Wales #4 2 mules for sister Sara, #5 it's a toss up between Joe Kidd high plains drifter. so sorry about Lee Van Cleef great actor but just missing my list. there's been quit a few cowboys, some of my favorites are Kurt Russell Samuel L Jackson Kevin Costner Tommy Lee Jones. there are others, cuz I got to go to bed it's like 3:00 in the morning. take care brother keep it up you're doing great. it's just my opinion like you have yours. I love what you do I wish I had the balls to do it keep it up man good luck to you
Thank you for your comment. I did miss "The Outlaw Josey Wales", I just forgot to say it when filming. When I was putting the video together I remembered and included the clip from movie. It's fantastic one of his best for sure. I've not seen "Two Mules for Sister Sara" but I have ordered a copy after reading your recommendation. One of the great things that's come out of making this video is all the great western movie recommendations. I really appreciate all the kind words and the chance to share my passion for these movies with others that are passionate too.
My good old departed friend told, back in the day, when i was just a little squirt, Van Cleef would hang around on the streets of his home town and mine Bound Brook NJ and folks would be amazed [ and buy him drinks at the local dive bar]. Lets honor all these cool actors and all the other western actors for the past 100 plus years.
You are on the money here { cause you agree with me of course} . But these young bucks & does dont know whats good. They gotta get a little older. Pls check the old movie stuff on my channel if you got time. Regards ....Old Artist
William S. Hart--the greatest western star of the silent era!
Randolph Scott
Tom Mix
Richard Widmark
Joel McCrea
Charles Bronson (he made some cool westerns, most famously ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST!)
Jimmy Stewart (his finest westerns were the ones directed by Anthony Mann in the 1950s)
Gregory Peck (THE GUNFIGHTER was one of his best)
Robert Mitchum (the only WASP American who looked cool in a sombrero!)
William Holden (at his best in THE WILD BUNCH)
Warren Oates (ditto)
Great list!
James Stewart always seemed a city fellow to me. But everyone has different opinions
Wrong!!! John Wayne Number 1 Nobody can Beat The Duke.. Clint Eastwood No2
👍👍
Glad to see ya give Lee Van Cleef the much earned credit he deserves.
I certainly agree 💯 with your first three on your list in really no particular order.
The Duke, The Outlaw Josey Wales,
And Sabata, are the embodiment of what a great western movie star should be.
But I'll have to add that nobody could fan that six shooter and chew on a short cigar like........
The Man With No Name
These are all great actors! This makes me miss my father who was a fan of both Lee Van Cleef and Clint Eastwood!
And please never skip Charles Bronson in Once Upon a Time in the West.
Ben John is an obvious choice as well, but also a supporting actor.
Also very charming man this Van Cleef!
These are the greatest Legends of great cowboys
Lee Van cleefe
I knew it would be Eastwood, Elliot and HIM; but t gotta tell you, I didn't see this coming. I didn't know LVC had been in that many westerns.
As you may figure out by my avatar of Bud Spencer, I think Terence Hill is the best cowboy actor! I also think Audie Murphy is near the top. Take a good look at Audie's eyes. You can tell that he rode the river and he's seen the elephant!
Again Do you Know these 8- Actor's..1-Craig Hill 2- Burt Reynolds 3-George Hilton 4-James Coburn 5-Kirk Douglass 6-Guy Madison,Robert woods..and Audie Murphy. ...all they was A Dangerous!!.Actor's...thanks...
Great picks! John Wayne's ranch in Egar, AZ is close to my ranch in Concho, AZ
Don’t forget John Wayne through him out of a bar in Liberty Valance
That makes JW the best
Don't forget that Kirk Douglas stabbed and Gary Cooper shot him. Gregory Peck shot him, too. That makes them better than Wayne.
@@fritzwalter4660 nobody better then the Duke
@@jbart1411 Only Bruce Dern!
John Wayne acted as a cowboy and a WWII Navel man, always a pleasure! Clint Eastwood imo acted as a common sense badass in most of his roles or era's. Charles Bronson was a badass in all of his roles and time periods and tough as hell in real life. Many of the others were great actors and as mentioned some were real cowboys! It's 2:37AM and I'm going to watch a Bronson Movie and maybe for the n'th time The Outlaw Josy Wales again. Might be my favorites farmer and post civil war movie of all time. Loved them all after a fashion, in my years of watching our Hero's
Angel eyes
Best video you've made, thanks , and these are all my favorite from the seventies BUT one cowboy is unique and that's Terence Hill. Thanks again. Pune City Jai Maharashtra.
Terrence Hill is fantastic, I love "They Call Me Trinity".
Glenn Ford made more, excellent, westerns than any other actor . Lee VanCleef was, for the most part, a co star so if you are not sticking to the major stars then Ben Johnson was the most, authentic, cowboy out there.
And a great actor.
My favorite is Richard Boone. RIP gunfighter aka Paladin, Have Gun-Will Travel.
Wow! I respect your choices. Well done my friend. I'm not going to dispute them. All listed deserve to be on the list and it would be difficult for me to put one in front of another.
Excellent list ! Bravo for Lee !
All number one. No one better than the other, everyone has their own style and own artistic personality. Those who love the western love them all equally.
The searchers is the best Cowboy movie ever made and you can still see the locations it was filmed. When men were Men !
I agree! Excellent western movie! Loved it! Didn’t it win the Oscar for “Best Picture”??
Lee Van Cleef, my guy! Love Sam Elliot, but LVC was awesome. Great selection video!!
Thank you kindly

This is like picking the most beautiful woman in the world! With a list that goes back to the twenty's and up to date this would be an exceptional task to figure out. Yes, your choices are good, what about Gary Cooper, Randolph Scott, oh boy let's just say there are so many great cowboys and that is a good thing! I'm just sad that all the great directors and actors are now gone. Modern movies are not even close to what the movies are supposed to be! It's a lost art and I don't see it coming back ever. It will be in our generations mind forever, lost to all that follow...
You're right, there are so many great cowboys. The fact that everyone has their own top 5 list just means we all benefit from finding more. Folks have said time and time again that westerns are over but the tales of the old west keep coming back. It's a part of American folklore. The way people watch movies has changed, sure, but it doesn't mean the stories are going anywhere. That's why I put Sam Elliott on the list to highlight the great new show, "1883" to show that new western content is still being made today... and always.
You are correct, thank You.
Great decision to include Sam Elliot and Lee Van Clef alongside Wayne and Eastwood. How about expanding the list to include some TV actors such as Clayton Moore, Richard Boone, and Hugh O'Brian?
Honorable mention to Dale Robertson (of Tales of Wells Fargo), a true cowboy.
Here is my Top 5
5. Randolph Scott

3. Gary Cooper
2. Clint Eastwood
1. John Wayne
👍👍
HANDS DOWN.. AUDIE MURPHY R.I.P.
Glenn Ford in 310 to Yuma was one of the superior cowboy roles I've ever seen.
When you chose Wayne and Eastwood at 3 and 2 I was afraid you were going to go Kevin Costner, but instead you went a far better direction. Great list
Glad to see Sam Elliott in this list.
Glen Ford, top hand with a horse
Man I loved your ranking👍! I guessed the no one. His high cheek bones, angular face and his piercing eyes. He truly is the no 1.
