    In this video I demonstrate how to prune watermelon plants? There are some nice benefits to prune the watermelon plants. Pruning will increase the size of the melons and focus the energy of the plant to the melon. When there are some many melons on a vine the plant will not be able to provide enough energy for every watermelon. Another benefit of pruning is to keep the plant from running over other plants in the garden. The use of pruning can make the garden area neat. Some people are nervous about pruning watermelon plants because of disease issues. As gardeners we prune many plants and trees so I don't worry about it. Pruning keeps the plants healthy and happy just look at the watermelons in the video.

    I’m glad you posted this today. My watermelons are putting on fruit and this is just what I needed to learn. Man I’m hoping for a successful harvest, I’ve got one sugar baby coming in nice and a few black diamonds and royal goldens. Out of all the stuff I planted this year I feel like my watermelons get my constant attention 😂

      @@block4565 pretty mixed bag. I had a real big black diamond coming in that I was excited for. I picked it probably a week too soon. I tried to do all the different ways to check for ripeness but I still fumbled the bag. My royal goldens produced a good bit of melons but none of them got very big. Think this year I’m going to up what I feed them and how often.

    This is my first year growing melons, didnt know i'm suposed to prune them but relieved to learn this bcz they've taken over! I cant even see where all the melons are it's so dense. I planted pumpkins among them as well! 🤦🏻‍♀️ maybe this is fixable now that I know its ok to cut vines. vines look healthy in spite of the competition for nutrients. Zone 9 (or 10 not sure)CA, long growing season so i hope theres time to still grow to full size.

    • @GrowSomethingTasty
      @GrowSomethingTasty  11 місяців тому +1

      HELLO BLUEBIRD, you don't have to prune them. I just do it to keep it cleaner, but the main reason is that the melons get larger when I do this. Big-time farmers don't do it because they have too many plants, and they fertilize heavily so they can get away with it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      HEY Lora!!! I'm so sorry to hear that. Did the plants get some type of disease? Did you notice any bug damage like squash bugs. The guy told you that so you don't transfer disease from plant to plant. I did not do that for my melons. I do take wipes to clean my shears for my tomato plants. I really don't know. I would try pruning a couple of plants this year and leave some melon plans alone to see what happens. If all of them die, then it's something else. Please let me know what happens. I received a lot of comments saying a lot of gardeners had their best melon season ever. I'm glad you love the videos!! That means a lot. I talk to you later, I'm going to be outside for 8 hours in a rain storm fishing a tournament.
