    why does this flight chose such a long route?

      It can depend on winds etc but they normally choose the shortest route so track north in a great circle. (Top of the earth is thinner).

      @@bellagio1066 also noticed few flights from doha and dubai fly over the same path rather than usual over atlantic ocean , probably too much traffic on eastern USA.

      It's also because the earth isn't flat so but heading north and flying in a great circle then back down is the shortest route. If I fly to the West Coast USA from London we normally fly more north than if I fly to the East Coast from London.

      It is to do greatly with the jet stream as well, flights travelling on the oceanic tracks towards the UK will want to make the most of the jet stream, whereas flights to the US will try and avoid it
