A bit late to this. Solid review, if colored by your anti-Bee bias. Bumblebee was used as the kid-friendly character - the stand in for the audience (at least until Hot Rod and Hot Shot). He was also the character to make contact with the humans in the comic, and one of the first two Autobots in the opening scene of the cartoon. It is hard to write stories about dozens of characters at once so someone gets the spotlight. The animated series had enough episodes to rotate the spotlight, but it is harder to do with the comics and films, so the first one to get in the spotlight locks in as a the "star" in the audience's mind. Couple that with the low price point of the original toy, and it leads to a self-perpetuating cycle of Bee popularity. As for the toy itself, it is pretty solid for when it was released in 2005. It is easy to forget that at the time fans were kind of starved for G1 content, and the last Bumblebee figure had been released was ten years early, as a redeco of Go-Bot Highbeam. And much as I have affection for my G1 pre-rubsign Bumblebee, this was really the first good figure for the character. Fans weren't as insistent on hardcore G1-accuracy back then. The first wave of Classics were meant to be modern updates of the characters, not slavish homages like we see in WFC. The toy was also designed at a time when Volkswagen didn't want to have anything to do with the franchise, and the Bayverse was only a twinkle in Spielberg's eye. The only Bay-homage is the black stripes, which look better and make more sense than the white from the original. As near as I can tell, the flight pack (which also seemed odd to me at the time) was a nod to the ActionMaster, who came with a heli-pack. Most likely it was included because he was the smallest toy with the least exciting alt-mode in the first deluxe wave, and they needed something to up his value.
I can totally relate to your feelings about the over-glorification of Bee. He's a fun little character, and certainly important to TF lore since (as the smallest) he was meant to be sort of the go-between for our human protagonists and these massive alien monsters. Like, I love Batman, he's my all-time favorite superhero. But for crying out loud, DC, he's not a GOD. I like the idea of Bumblebee having flight. Considering he's one of the shorter Autobots, using a jet-pack to get up to eye level with the taller Autobots or other transformers would be both appropriate for his name ("Bumblebee") and honestly kinda cute.
After losing the rights to the names for Hot Rod and Bumblebee, Hot Shot was made. Hot Shot was the human friend character like Bumblebee but he was destined to lead like Hot Rod and when the rights to bumblebee’s name were (re?)acquired Hot Shot’s role went to Bumblebee and that included the Hot Rod destined leader aspect.
As a ''true'' Bumblebee fan I understand you feelings a bit that I think I prefer Bee as a just a simple sweet kid, not a leader, like I go the Peter Sam from TTTE, Takato from Digimon Tamers, Megaman, Sailor Moon or Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls route, which I protray him like that in my headcanon. Not the hotheaded leader like Tai from Adventure or Lloyd from Ninjago. I should give that to Rodimus in my opinion, it's just like treating Mimi the leader of the team which I think does not work for me, even she's my favourite. Just I think these writers need to put him back to the sweet simple kid route or even heck make an insecure version of him who's prone to tears, that's much better then being a leader, well for G1 atleast or new incarnations, that's fine.
I just watched your review of the Siege Datsuns where you bring up Alternators Smokescreen, and I got an ad with a thumbnail that had a _very_ similar car
The black racing stripes are to make him look like...well...a bee, I would assume. Like the door-wings in the movies and in Prime. Honestly, it's not a terrible concept. He was originally a 'bug' after all.
man all you guys from 2018 get to look back on the first 100 videos and go "I have that" haha thanks for reminding me, and for helping me out from way back 4 years ago!
I liked the original of this figure, feel free to judge, but I do like it better, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, this is a repaint of a Bumblebee figure that had lighter yellow and white stripes, which was later repainted into both cliffjumper and bugbite
I think the whole push for “Bumblebee is Optimus Prime’s Protege” is because that role originally went to Hot Rod, and we _all_ know how people felt about Hot Rod back in ‘86. So, after the heavily Bee-focused Bay movies, Hasbro gave that schtick to Bee, because to this day, they _still_ think we all hate Hot Rod. Edit: Anybody know of a good CHUG scale third party Hot Rod?
Loved the figure when it came out. Having an updated bee with accurate head sculpt was such a novelty in 2005, also the lack of a gun doesn’t bother me. I mean he’s usually a scout in the cartoon so why would he carry a gun?
I recommend the thrilling 30 bumblebee that comes with a target master but is super small or the other thrilling 30 figure that has a mustang as it's alt mode. He sort of is a little too badass if you're looking for a bumblebee that is more like a squeeker that everyone hates.
Great review, btw if you don't like him as bee you can convert him into hubcap using the renderform head and weapon upgrade kit, I plan on doing that to my rts bee when I can.

Well hey at least with the earthrise cliffjumper we're getting bumper before bumblebee and you do have to agree that prime bumblebee is better than most of his other incarnations
I don't really have any qualms about this figure. I don't know if I would go as far to say Bayification, since he does have a normal looking headsculpt. The Flight of the Bumblebee skit was funny. Keep up the reviews! :D
True, but Jazz also had a G1 head, but was given Pontiac Solstice headlights on a Porsche like vehicle. That was my point anyway. Classics bee was sunshine yellow with a white bumper. Wen RTS came along they reissued it, but gave him Michael Bayified Racing Stripes and a Macaroni and Cheese semi-orange. That's all I meant really But thanks! And will do!
actually that was when I was introduced to Transformers as well. I was really eager for Revenge of the Fallen, but then I watched it and I haven't been much of a fan of the series ever since. I looked up G1 around 2012 and was hooked = P

Why Bumblebee? One word: Pikachu. If you are looking to copy a successful franchise that has endured for decades to copy Pokemon. And if its yellow mascot is shoehorned into every expansion guess what Bee you're in Beast Wars, Combiner Wars and everything else war or war adjacent.
The Lazy Eyebrow Reviewer yeah, and then the reprolabels set can come with herbie-bot! me personally, I will get the toyworld version cause it looks to be the same mold but smaller and hopefully cheaper. In all honesty, Bee should have had a gun instead of an undersized jet ski.
Martin Serrano Yeah, well thank God for Fansproject!
That's a pretty terrible reference, seeing as how it looks nothing like it. But a nod nonetheless.
I completely agree with Martin though
I moreso wish that the jet ski is a target master.
I'd prefer the Cliffjumper repaint. I too am kinda tired of Bee in the spotlight.

Good thing Earthrise has an original Cliffjumper figure that looks good. I hope that they also make a bumblebee that looks like the beetle
I used to have this figure. I miss it

I think Bumblebee looks good with stripes... Gives him an actual "bumblebee" look instead of being plain yellow.

The car mode is a old citreon rally car. Hence racing seats and stripes

This review is very much hard to look at nowadays
Cuz I feel as though this review just represent the whiny personality of fans back in the early 2000s as a direct response to the Michael Bay and align continuities characters
That we wanted accurate versions of these characters and for them to never get past their initial character growth
Yes I understand completely about some people just wanting some characters to stay in their lane did not try to do anything outside of them
But I kind of feel as though like this is a poor man's thought of thinking
Yes bumblebee and any other yellow themed autobot in the past was always meant to be the kid appeal character but I think after beast wars they really showed off that despite some characters only existing for kid appeal material that they could still mature and evolve beyond their archetype
I love what they did with both cheetour and hotshot
Them being recognized as the youngest members of their group to ultimately becoming competent heroes and warriors in their own right
Even so with bumblebee during the Prime, cyberverse, earth spark, and to a lesser degree the war for Cybertron trilogy
I love to see characters grow up and evolve past their own faults and heck especially after transformers one
I love the brand new characterizations that we got for a lot of classic generation 1 characters especially the one that seems to never get any form of character development or change optimus
I know that the lazy eyebrow reviewer doesn't think this way anymore about this stuff
But this still serves as an interesting point of how we got into the over glorification of generation 1 and how we want things to go back to the way they were with characters
And I feel as though we're still paying the price of that kind of fan mentality because nowadays we actually want something new from these characters instead of just the same old same old
this is a really interesting response to this video. thank you
