D&D 5e - The False Hydra Part 1

About halfway through their campaign of Ghosts of Saltmarsh, my players encountered something spooky in the town of Fogmire.

If i run this, im going to have a party member randomly notice that their arm or leg is bleeding - ocassionally having their weapon in hand for some reason, and ill have them enter or leave areas where they werent before, like they were in a tavern, then ill explain that they have wrapped up in the chaple and are leaving the chapel grounds, as they had a run in with it and have completely forgotten the encounter and moving on from it. If they happen to jot down a mark on parchment if they see it, if they happen to be near its lair, ill have the paper absolutely covered in marks on both sides.

It you play with any sort of fog of war (not sure if you're on a VTT), maybe have an are already exposed, hinting at the idea that they've been there before

One tipp: work on your audio balancing. The music was way to loud at some points

So the random potims theyre finding in weird places i understand thats theyre friend who died that assisted them somehow. But they dont remeber them. I was thinki g of running that idea in my own false hydra. But can i do that from the begining of the quest when theyre lvl 1? Im planning placing my hydra halfway through the campaign. But i want the surprise to be they always had a party member but they got eaten by the hydra when they got to town. But they dont remeber them. So all the quests b4 they just remeber finding potions an items in weird places.

That's exactly what I did and it's an excellent way to do it. I dropped this into a campaign of Ghosts of Saltmarsh, but the party was finding items way back in the very first module

@@FigNewton7 now is it them finding them odd items of this dead party member just they're memories trying to understand or place this individual but cant cause all of theyre memories have been erased "Wait why is there just random potions an items in this tent with us. Who's is this?"

@@jamescoleman1574 The latter. The lost party member was a cleric, so any time they should have remembered the cleric healing them with a spell, their memories were modified so that they just found a potion

For pretty much my entire campaign I used maps that people uploaded to r/battlemaps. This one specifically is a map I repurposed originally called "Town of Annsgate" from u/OrangeMagic05
