    I remember when my youngest brother (14 at the time) slammed his arm on the armchair and went to his room crying. This was almost 3/4 of the way through the season. He's on the spectrum, too. I went into his room and told him "This is a family tradition. The Lions drove you to tears, they drove our father to tears, his father to tears, and someday, I look forward to them driving my kids to tears". Dark times for Lions fans.

    Watching this now makes me all the more grateful for the team the Lions have now. I remember this season well. Being excited that they went unbeaten in the preseason. Only to be so disappointed after the first game. Getting destroyed by a rookie Matt Ryan. I ended up in the hospital 5 days later diagnosed with Leukemia. I spent pretty much the rest of that season in the hospital watching this horrible team. Makes me appreciate how much better things now even more.

    It's impossible not to like Rod Marinelli after hearing his interviews. I think he's a good coach he just got stuck with an awful team with poor management.

    • @99jerimiah
      @99jerimiah 7 років тому +31

      Marinelli is a great coach but not meant to be a head coach. Marinelli surrounded himself with the wrong assistant coaches including Jim Colletto, Scot Loeffler, Pat Carter, Joe Barry, Joe Cullen, and Stan Kwan. Marinelli tried to run his Tampa 2 defense that failed. Matt Millen by far deserves the majority of the blame for the 0-16 season. He was in charge of rebuilding the team since 2001 and had a .250 winning percentage with a record of 31-84. Millen made bad decision after another on draft day. Joey Harrington, Charles Rogers, Kevin Jones, and Mike Williams.

    • @RuffRyder_43
      @RuffRyder_43 7 років тому +2

      Sean Wolenski Well said. It's crazy that Millen lasted as long as he did. Probably explains why the Lions haven't been in Super Bowl contention for years now.

    • @99jerimiah
      @99jerimiah 7 років тому +3

      He had a great relationship with William Clay Ford Sr. that's why he stayed as long as he did. The reason the Lions haven't been in the Superbowl yet is because of The Curse Of Bobby Layne.

    • @elcunado2926
      @elcunado2926 7 років тому +1

      Derek Ruff he wasn't a good head coach.

    • @elcunado2926
      @elcunado2926 7 років тому +2

      Sean Wolenski the one thing that's remained constant through everything: ford family ownership. It starts at incompetence at the top. Martha is better than William clay which is kind of surprising. For WCF it was the ford family saying "we don't want you near the car business, here go play with this in the corner." This being the Detroit lions. In my mind they won't win until the ford family doesn't own them anymore. Quinn is doing a hell of a job and who knows maybe he defies everything that is the lions and somehow wins a playoff game. He's starting in the right place: protecting stafford. I don't like teryl austin's defensive scheme. The one year they did really good in 2014 they were absolutely loaded especially up front.

    Rob Parker is one of the sorriest excuses of a journalist I've ever seen. Yes Joe Barry sucked as a defensive coordinator but, that was the wrong time to ask a question like this. Everyone knew Rod Marinelli was about to get fired and all Rob did is just try to kick him while he was down. How Rob still has a job about discussing sports is mind mocking. Rob gave Detroit sports journalists a bad reputation with making false stories about Kirk Cousins, Calling Hank Aaron a coward, Calling RG III a cornball brother, Hating on Kobe Bryant and Tom Brady, and Saying Kevin Love couldn't play in the NBA because he is white.

      Two statistical websites - Pro Football Reference and Football Outsiders - believe the 2009 Lions were actually inferior to the 0-16 2008 team, but played a weaker schedule (NFC West and AFC North vis-à-vis 2008 NFC South and AFC South divisions that both proved much stronger than expected when that season opened).
      The result was that the 2009 Lions were able to win by five points against a 4-12 Redskins outfit (who went 8-8 in 2008 when they beat the Lions 25-17) and by one point against a 5-11 Cleveland Browns team in that AFC North.
      The odd thing is that the 2008 and 2009 Lions were not clearly the worst team in the NFL at that time. The St. Louis Rams went 6-42 for three seasons between 2007 and 2009, and did only one win better than the Lions in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. It is certainly noteworthy for there to be two non-expansion teams simultaneously so bad in one league.

    The hilarious thing about this...
    In the 2009 NFL Draft, the Lions pick Matthew Stafford. But the reason he went down as the greatest Detroit Lion of all time is this...last season he joined the LA Rams to replace Jared Goff. He then won a Super Bowl. In their own stadium, and also won a conference championship in their own stadium.
    Thus, the Detroit Lions, for at least the 2021 season, turned into LA's Michigan-based affiliate...the #DetroitRams.

    • @guodade2239
      @guodade2239 6 місяців тому

      36:35 is useful but with Stafford retiring it becomes clear that 2009 was the worst NFL draft year of all time, or very nearly so. 2013, 1992, 1972 and 1966 might compare, but the lack of impact or even valuable players in the 2009 draft was remarkable.
      Stafford was so clearly the best player from the 2009 draft that with hindsight one might think the Rams should have traded for him back then. However, it seems to be forgotten that the Rams of 2008 were just as awful as the Lions. In fact, Pro Football Referenceʼs “Simple Rating System” has the 2-14 2008 Rams as marginally worse than the 0-16 2008 Lions and the 1-15 2009 Rams as several points worse. Thus, there was no point trading for Stafford as the Rams had nothing to offer the Lions.
      Pro Football Reference and Football Outsiders agree that the Lions and Rams of 2008 and 2009 both rank among the half-dozen worst teams since 1960. In fact, since 1978 only the 1986 Buccaneers, 1991 Colts and mid-2000s 49ers remotely compare by either rating system. It really should be appreciated how remarkable two once-in-a-generation awful teams coinciding precisely is. It is interesting though how much more people talk about the Lions than the 6-42 2007 to 2009 Rams.

But it’s not so easy for the fans who pay lots of hard earned money to attend losing games. I’m sure they too would like to know why that def coordinator was still employed. Smh. Have you not been watching the dude? His numbers are astronomical. He's tough as nails. He won a game with a separated shoulder.
      It's not Stafford's fault that the defense has been shit. The running backs have licked ass. The O-Line is almost non-existent. And the coaches that he's played under have been some of the dumbest pieces of shit to ever grace the NFL.
      Since he's come in the team has been to the playoffs 3 times. They lost to the Super Bowl winning Saints. His offense scored 28 points (not bad), his defense gave up 45 (terrible). Then they lost to Cowboys in Dallas when they got SCREWED by the refs on a non-call defensive holding that would have iced the game. Then they lost to Seattle in Seattle... yeah that happens to pretty much everyone in the playoffs.

      Stafford inherited the only 0-16 team ever. First two years he was mostly injured. So in 6 years as a starter he's made the playoffs 3 times. He's only 29 and getting better and better. Give it time, he could play another 8-10 years!

      He took an 0-16 team and led them to 3 playoff appearances in his time there, by Lions standards of the decade before Stafford, that's like winning 10 super bowls.

      I remember well the 2011 Indianapolis Colts who lost Peyton Manning to neck surgery being talked about as likely to finish 0-16 - then they unexpectedly won not one but two games. Must have been the same feeling with the 2020 New York Jets, who had exactly the same win/loss pattern for the whole season as the 2011 Colts.

    There was never a bigger example of what a complete crybaby complainer Marinelli was than this. He used nepotism in his hiring process......he made himself a target of ridicule........Parker called him out on it......and then couldn't face the music and whined to the press like he was some kind of victim!
