- Alden 9901 Shell Cordovan Plain Toe Blucher in Black review. The plain toe blucher is a staple shoe that is as versatile as it is stylish. It can be worn casually or formally and looks great in black shell cordovan. It's no nonsense clean design makes it's a great all around shoe and one of my favorites.

The profile is just perfect. Its simplicity is just a beauty.
Just a great all-around timeless and non-trendy shoe. I own both the 990 and the 9901 (many people avoid black), and I ended selling a well-worn Allen Edmonds Leeds in black shell cordovan because no matter how long I wore it, it never fit properly due to the lack of toe room. I have a high arch, and I prefer the support of the steel shank on the Aldens.
Over and over I hear people say you can wear this or that with a suit and it looks equally as well. Yes to the untrained eye but traditionally oxfords are worn with suits and imo look much better because their design allows the suit pants to lay a certain way and also the sole is thinner, not a double leather sole like you see on alden bluchers and some of their boots. A double leather sole gives off a more durable, casual look. When purchasing these higher end shoes its good to know the difference between an oxford, blucher, etc. because while all might "look good" with a suit or jeans, the right shoe will make an outfit look more polished and complete.
Yeah you'd have to have a heavier, more rugged suit on in a thick flannel or tweed, for these to really work with a suit, and being black you'd want the suits to be charcoal or grey. As far as Alden shell goes, the oxford straight tip bal 9071 in black or color 8 shell is the shoe you want for a suit. Or any of their single soled oxfords. I also personally wouldn't wear black with jeans, as black is too formal, but it can be done.
I’ve seen too many experienced, well-dressed, wealthy, powerful, high status, etc. people who wear suits every day and who wear open laced shoes with suits over too many years to buy into any no bluchers with suits rule. Sure these particular shoes are on the casual side, but to a lot of people a suit is not in any way formal, it’s just what they put on in the morning.
Yes, the BB one was too large for me so I recently sold it and decided to go Alden. The AE Leeds I ended up returning due to a defect and AE gave me a refund.
Wow, thanks for making this awesome video...very informative. I think that this particular shoe will be my first pair of Aldens. Hope you keep making these fantastic shoes videos.
Hey Tristan, can you showcase your collection and try some of them on with dress pants? Dude, you made me fall in love with Alden shoes! Especially Cordovan!
Wish I could afford a nice beautiful shoes like that. Very sharp.
thank you, you made a lot of things easier for me
Thanks for wearing jeans in the video, not everyone wears suits 24/7
I only have this pair currently.
You and me both. Cigar and Whiskey shell cordovan are very rare and not even being made right now.
Great review! You seem to like black a lot however and I was kinda hoping this would be in cigar or whiskey
I just bought a burgundy pair and paid over $800! Inflation is actually scary.
Wow.
Great vid! Do you own the black PTB with the commando sole? They look nice as well. I like to put colored laces in them to make them pop. :)
I didn't get that type shoehorn... Beautiful shoe.
Does the double sole and cordovan leather make the shoe heavy? What is the advantage of the double sole? I have been wearing inexpesnive shoes for casula wear, but now being retireed, want to upgrade. I wionder if a black cordovan and a color 8 cordovan would be appropriate for casual wear.
Ah, I understand now. Regardless, beautiful shoes.
Can you wear these, as well as the color 8 shoe, with a completely informal setting, say wiht khakis and a polo shirt? Which is more informal- the black or color 8?
hows the sizing compared to nike sneakers?
May I ask the purpose of having three different pairs of black cordovan PTB? I'm not being a troll or anything, I'm just curious.
hi, i was thinking about buying some cordovan loafers, and i just wanted to know if you prefer allen edmonds or alden cordovan shoes, you know, in an overall sense.
the shoes were shinny at the first? my alden were not. why?
oh, I see, you resold the Alden for BB and the AE? I've been there.
Have you ever seen the shoemaking process?
Both colors are equal in my opinion.
LOVE IT ! my US shoe size is 7.5E, if i buy alden 9901, which size should i choose? they said they donot have size 7E now ,so size 7d and 7.5d, which would fit better ?thank you !
You gotta try both.
the best fit is E
are those shoes ever on sale? i wanna get the burgandy version
Rarely, if ever.
Alden.
I like this brand despite the fact that they cost more that louie vuitton

Louis Vuitton is nothing against Alden.
Nice shoes. The jeans do not fit to them at all. Looks somewhat odd.
I never heard anyone pronounce blucher the way he does.
Both ways are fine: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blucher_shoe
phototristan It's the same with the word worsted. It's not pronounced worsted, it's woosted. People today have little to no knowledge of proper gentlemen's attire. I was lucky. My Dad taught me the rules and his knowledge. I always tell people if you want to learn about men's clothing, read Allan Flussers first book and ask questions. Gone are the great men's stores like FR Tripler, Chipp, Frank Brothers, Herzfelds. Brooks Brothers seems to have more stores than Wallmart.
