A much much better choice for Linux users right now (mid 2020) is any of the companies that sell a Tongfang Ryzen chassis as opposed to the Clevo one. From what I undestand Main advantage is that it comes with a whooping 4600H or 4800H processor that's able to run in both low wattage and high performance mode with 6-8 cores depending on the model, is entirely linux optimized and best of all comes with insane 91wh battery. These are known as Tongfang PF5NU1G and there are several companies selling them already (MRSP of about 700USD) and they are absolutely mind blowing in comparison. As someone that's run Linux on laptops for work for nearly a decade, this is a huge jump in performance/use and would replace most thinkpads even.
Anton is always dropping knowledge. I love all your content I just stumbled across your channel just a few months ago. If you have alot of Linux tips/info on exploring and optimizing the OS please make a video on things that it has to offer. I am currently looking for a new computer and have always used windows, but now that I'm into IOT projects it seems linux has more to offer. Any advice you can drop in a 5 min video would be awesome!

@@FinnBaygan I'm sure if they had a larger R&D budget they'd develop their own chassis. As it stands, they're a boutique manufacturer and take what they can get. If people buy their stuff then I'm sure in the future they might develop their own chassis, but remember that that stuff's expensive man. You gotta get your own tooling, pay more engineers and basically build your own production line (or iron out all the kinks of having it manufactured by someone else).
The best guys out there are the ones so excited about their interests and hobbies, that they make you excited too. You know what I mean. Anthony is the best.

IF I'd have the money, and the need this is the laptopt that I'd be looking for. Hell I would even bought one for my mom, even though she needs it only for e-mails and bills.
@@deathbornium they wouldn't make an Android phone -- they'd make an Ubuntu phone, a PostMarketOS phone, a Plasma phone, or they would roll their own distro. This is because Android doesn't fully align with the philosophy of the company -- it is not **quite** fully open source, and it hides away a lot of its configurable parts. Tldr; see the Purism Librem phones and the PinePhones, they would probably be similar to what System76 would make
The people at System 76 are amazing too. They literally called me to thank me when I bought my laptop. They called me a couple times after I'd received it just to see how I was doing. Pretty amazing really, super personable. I'm really impressed with them as a company and love my Gazelle. I'll buy an Oryx one day. I love them and it's easily the best computer I've ever owned.

im also just getting through the touches of linux my self im currently dual booting manjro and windows 10.. its such a shame that adobe does not support linux otherwise i would of said good bye to windows a long time ago :(
In that same vein, it would be interesting to see him review the upcoming Purism laptop (Librem 14). I would be curious how it compares to the Oryx. Just looking at specs, it has Coreboot as well, though the keyboard controller might be less customisable, but you do get hardware that requires no binary blob drivers, and those lovely hardware kill switches. Both Purism and System76 are definitely trying to target an Apple-style or ex-macOS customer.
I think of it more as the "paying more to get what you want". Apple users want the Apple ecosystem, where everything is apple and all works together, and they are willing to pay for it. I’d really like someone like him benchmark systems for applications like deep learning etc. I know it’ll be a limited audience but there are people who are looking for portable AI development machines.
Doing AI/DL work on a portable device is a pretty bad idea, all things considered. Most professional DL/AI work is done in clusters and laptops aren't thermally cut out for just intense tasks. At least if you're planning to do anything beyond tutorials lol Best is to buy a cheap laptop and train AI/DL models on the cloud. GCloud offers dedicated tensor professors for such jobs
lol you actually take this channel serious? Its fun but definitely not a channel for some in-depth pc utilization in real world applications for research and business.
@rex Yes, it’s a bad idea to train large models on a laptop. However a lot of pre processing can be done on a sufficiently powerful machine and then you can carry out small scale tests immediately. There’s obviously some benefit to having offline processing capability. Not everybody lives in an area of high bandwidth net connectivity.
@@kanaadpathak Why would you need benchmarks for light pre-processing and testing tasks? Also, I'm not sure what part of the world you live in but how do you do AI/DL work professionally without either a cluster or a cloud subscription? There's no way around avoiding laptops for real life DL tasks and if you live in an area with insufficient bandwidth to carry out tasks on the cloud, I doubt you'll be able to get this laptop shipped to you without being extorted at least. Trust me, I'm a Consultant and guiding clients on decisions like these is my job lol

Pop’s edition of Gnome desktop is the only one I HAVENT had issues with... there’s always tons of bugs in default Gnome, especially trying to use a non-US keyboard layout. This is why I always prefer Plasma :p My next laptop will be from System76
minitos1 It’s a bit of work to move away from Gnome, cause you have to change some configs and such. But pretty much any Linux distribution will have ISOs for other desktops or none. Linux is really great!
I still don't get it why GNOME people thought it was a good idea to design a touch-first interface for the use on non-touch devices. GNOME would be great for a tablet but I'm yet to see a tablet to which it would be easy to install Linux with GNOME. So my favourite is KDE.
@@Ross6041 no, as I stated, the base config is 8GB of ram. The GPU is a RTX 2060, which is good, but there are comparably cheaper alternatives when talking about laptops. At least they are pushing Linux and are active developers, I guess their target customers are the people that still use those ol Thinkpads as UNIX machines.
@@Belgarathe I've been researching laptops recently, specifically Clevo and Tongfang laptops, which are rebranded by XMG and Schenker (in EU) and others. I don't remember who manufactures System76's, but I believe the ram isn't soldered, as they give various options, which is difficult when reselling soldered RAM laptops, and they offer no LPDDR4 or LPDDR4X, which are always soldered because those have tighter electric constraints.

@@StarkRG The difference today is that the laptop is running Coreboot, a completely open source firmware. From what I understand, prior to this, only closed-source firmware was capable of that.
Agreed. I think there is a large enthusiast / prosumer market that has a need for luxury linux based machines. Plenty of techies who cant be bothered to build and configure a system themself but need it for whatever reason. While the design language isn't as AESTHETIC as an Apple product, you can tell they are design focused and constantly iterating their style. Cost-wise it is expensive but still well within range and honestly about 30-50% cheaper than a similar based Apple product (especially ram and GPU costs).
The keymap remapping is super interesting. As someone who builds custom keyboards, seeing a QMK-like configuration option is real selling point. I don't know any existing laptops that allow key remapping in a similar fashion.
5:35 Anthony forgot to mention that, if you want to encrypt, you can use a technique called *Full Disk Encryption including /boot* that is only possible on systems with open source motherboard firmware like coreboot, osboot and libreboot. The potential benefit is complicated to explain but, briefly, removes a potential attack vector and makes it easier to completely secure the device against physical attackers (the threat encryption defends against)
I purchased a gaming laptop around x-mas, from Walmart. A brand named Evoo, my chassis looks similar to the one you have in your video. It came with Windows installed without bloatware, only two apps, one to control rbg backlight, and fan, the other is TXH, for sound control. but the app is temperamental. I'm a Linux guy that's taught himself not to rely on Windows, during the Win8 flop, I can do everything in Linux, but a majority of my games only support Windows. I got a idea from a UA-camr to game on a Virtual Machine. I just purchased a 256GB, nvme drive and put Mint on it, and I'm really impressed with the level of control I have over my hardware. I love the Nvidia option to switch to integrated graphics by selecting a checkbox, although I have a button that changed performance options on Windows. I'm going to max out my memory, change all my drives to TB's, and get rid of Windows for good on this machine. This last episode I had with Windows broke the straw, I rebooted and the machine never booted back into Windows. I had to reset the machine, it wouldn't even restore, it took me a week to get to peak gaming performance. I can't begin to explain the headaches I've have with Windows and gaming performance, but updates seem to cause issues. I've already installed Steam, downloaded Payday, and Linux is loving my hardware. I don't have to install third party software to get my devices to function like my PS4 controller, it just works. It recognized my 144hz panel, in Windows settings would reset on their own. Although I like Gnome, in Fedora it just got too cumbersome to navigate, my flavor is Mint Cinnamon. A much much better choice for Linux users right now (mid 2020) is any of the companies that sell a Tongfang Ryzen chassis as opposed to the Clevo one. From what I undestand
Main advantage is that it comes with a whooping 4600H or 4800H processor that's able to run in both low wattage and high performance mode with 6-8 cores depending on the model, is entirely linux optimized and best of all comes with insane 91wh battery.

Most professional DL/AI work is done in clusters and laptops aren't thermally cut out for just intense tasks. At least if you're planning to do anything beyond tutorials lol

I'm just amazed how well my gaming rig is working with the Linux Kernal, but not surprised. Love your vids, and your cameos with my other tech UA-camrs.
