- These 4 phenomenal guitars were in the studio recently - two by Michael Thames and two by Glenn Canin. Didn’t have time to record a proper comparison video, so I’ll just call this a quick little demo. The music is an excerpt of Mallorca by Albeniz.
In order of appearance:
2020 Spruce/Maple Michael Thames. Solid top. La Suprema body (3 days old in this video)
2018 Cedar/Indian Rosewood Michael Thames balsa core double top
2017 spruce/Indian Rosewood Glenn Canin balsa core double top
2019 cedar/Indian Rosewood Glenn Canin balsa core double top (1 month old in this video)
Bravo, Matt! So many guitar comparathons in our histories. What did we learn? Certainly that Thames can't make a non-great guitar (Canin sounds real good, too) and that they all sound like us. I once made an album for Yamaha. I played 17 guitars, from the $100 plywood one to the $15,000 model, even one made from bamboo. Tragically, in the CDs printing, the producer got the tracks labeled wrong. So not only are the titles wrong, but all the guitars are incorrectly identified, rendering the CD worthless for its purpose of promoting Yamaha guitars. The CD's all ended up never being distributed and another incredible career break for me ended up in the dumpster with those CDs. The point is, years later, not knowing what guitar is on what track, they all just sound like me. Ha!
That solid top recorded the best! Awesome playing man.
the first one is my favourite
Everything sounds so beautiful!
Loved the Thames double top cedar.
Hearing those Canin guitars makes me wonder why I play a spruce top.

Matt, tell us what you think. I'm with the guys that liked the solid top. My limited experience listening live to double tops is they are louder and the trebles are usually sweeter or more open but the basses sound a bit flabby. Similar to old bass strings. I heard the same guitarist in the same hall play a Ruck and a double top by David Schramm. The Ruck sounded better to me but needed a mic. The Schramm double top cut through the lousy acoustics of the hall but I didn't like the sound as much.
I really like Canin’s guitar, but after such comparison, I have to admit, Thames guitar was well balanced with musical trebles, while Canin’s guitar basses were over powering trebles.
what number is that 2019 cedar Canin?
I'll go for the solid top
