This song breaks my tear barriers like anything. The moistness in the eyes and the lump in the throat makes me want to scream out the grief so loud till my lungs tear up and burst. It used to be sung by my long dead mother and was her favorite. I miss you my dear old woman. It has been nineteen years but it still feels like yesterday. Rest in eternal peace wherever you are.
Oh Lataji, you are the Goddess of music! The melodious voice that God has gifted you is rarest of the rare! You infuse life into every song through your voice with immense range, flexibility and extreme sense of Sur and Bhaav, which no other singer can ever do!!! Your songs are an institution in singing for aspiring as well as professional singers! There can never be another Lata Mangeshkar, as that is what God willed! This song is based on his own original bengali song of Salilda Na Jeona rendered again by legendary Lataji!!!
Salil Da was once asked in an interview "which is your favorite song?" The Indian Mozzart replied "Songs are like my own children, all are very dear to me. However if I were to choose, it may be a song like 'O sajna barkha bahaar aayee'".!!

Lata Mangeshkar, with her mellifluous voice, soothing and captivating singing and exquisite renditions enthralled music lovers over the last seven decades. Lata's haunting melodies and timeless classics have given tremendous pleasure to my heart, mind and soul. After all these years of listening I still cannot stop playing those songs and hearing them over and over, and the thirst remains unquenched. No wonder Lata is referred to as The Nightingale of India. Lata Mangeshkar has ruled the hearts of all music lovers with her beautiful voice, melodious songs, and exquisite renditions. Listening to Lata Mangeshkar's songs gives one the feeling of spending time on the banks of the river and watching the magic river water flow --- smooth, gentle and serene. The enchanting voice of Lata Mangeshkar has produced some timeless classics, captivated the connoisseurs of music, has given lots of pleasure to the body, mind and soul, and enhanced our lives with nostalgia and sentimentality. I just cannot believe that the person who stamped her indelible imprint on me with her renditions has left this world. I wonder if there is any music lover who would not get this sentimental feeling. Lata Mangeshkar's death was to me like the clanging bell of a departing train. It was like the deep hoot of a ship leaving the shore. We are forced to reconcile to the idea that she is no more. But Lata lives on with her songs.........

It's Surbahar, not Sitar instrument. Surbahar was favourite of Respected Salil Chowdhury ji. Ravi Shankars wife ( Annapurna Devi) played Surbahar, not Sitar.
Surbahar (pronunciation:[s̪urbəhɑːr], सुरबहार, سربهار; lit. Springtime of Notes)[1] sometimes known as bass sitar, is a plucked string instrument used in the Hindustani classical music of the Indian subcontinent. It is closely related to the sitar, but has a lower pitch. Depending on the instrument's size, it is usually pitched two to five whole steps below the standard sitar.

Not in solo but in a number of duets her art of micro voice modulation is clearly noticed, it is the greatness of Latajee's art of singing. Ex: O sanam tere ...Aayee Milan ki bela, Tere Hushna ki kya...Leader, Kajra Laga ke....Apna desh, Tumko kitna pyar hai....Goonj, Agar me puchhu jawab....Shikari etc so many duets.
No words to comment. Just listen the voice of didi and music of salil da and enjoy. Many many salutes to all such legends. What a emotions put thru in each word while singing by lataji . we have not seen saraswati maa but have truly experienced with your voice from heart. Jai lata maa. Rest in peace. I have listen your lots of music since so many yrs and it gave me real joy.
I have to just close my eyes while listening to this song and I am immediately transported back to my childhood days of good memories , of this song being played at the radio from our neighborhood houses , at evening to dusk time , fresh food being cooked in kitchen and we children either finishing off our homework or ready packing our school bag for the next day , A complete feeling of peace and serenity takes over when think back of those days !!
Cannot get over her passing yet. Lata ji was always part of our ethos/consciousness, as her career began more or less at the same time as Independent India. Even as children our earliest memories are sounds and not visuals and so these songs which were playing in our homes and which helped put us to sleep made us believe that Lata ji had been around since the beginning of time. It's hard to imagine a world without her going forward. My heart feels so heavy and I feel a part of me has died.
All the comments on this song are just amazing. After having read all of these comments, I am speechless, nothing to add. I can simply say, it is divine singing. Equally fantastic is the beautiful face associated with this song. The combination made this song a" kaal jayi" song. Hey Bhagwan, ek aur Lata Ji ko paida kar de. Duniya me jeenay ka jeetay rahne ka bahana to rahega.
Lataji + Sadhnaji + Salilji + Shailendraji = Legendary composition of o sajna, which can't be forgotten for ages and ages. Today's composers like Tony kakkar should learn from those days composers and lyricists.
Ohh mannn...I have been listening to lata ji since i was 8 yrs..n till today after 19 years, I get the same effect full of mesmerization, respect n admiration everytime I listen her songs
one of the most remembered songs from my childhood. the tabla accompaniment is glorious. Only Salil Chowdhary could have composed such a great song. I also remember with fondness his songs in Madhumathi from the same period.
Lata ji had revealed in an interview that when she saw this movie first time she mostly liked the picturisation of two songs. First one was "O Sajna Barkha Bahar" and another one was "Mila Hai Kisi ka Jhumka". LOVE U ALL WHO MADE THIS SONG POSSIBLE. 💛💛❤️❤️😊😊
A few days back some jackass on Twitter invoked a debate that Lata Mangeshkar is an overrated singer. Entire Twitter divided. Oh God! People like Lata Mangeshkar, Salil Chowdhury requires recognition? No one can create this kind of music in their lifetime. Salil Chowdhury? Perhaps India's most learned musician. Lata + Salil is a magical combination, simply made in heaven!

There are very few comments on lyrics which is soul of this song. Please remember the singer and composer can exhibit their talents only with good lyrics as base. I am not undermining the talents of Lata or Salil chowdhary but the lyricist need to get due credit. I do not see the name of the lyricist in most of the titles including in this. See the beauty of lyrics of great Shailendra which fits the situation like a glove. How beautifully he brings in the pathos and feelings of the character on a monsoon afternoon in his lyrics.

It’s not mere song actually. It’s nothing but nectar for an authentic song lover. I've been overwhelmed in an extreme manner after listening such an amazing song.
Lataji is evergreen.. can any singer of that time could render this song so beautifully... Many people claim that she has destroyed other singers careers, I belive it isn't true.. what a variety, range and class .. I am not demeaning other singers , whatever they got in their kitty they have justified that.. I believe she is a real fighter whi has blossomed for over 60 years of her career..

Salil Choudhury was one of the most talented Music Director of Indian Film Industry.

Lataji, the more we hear u Today the more we feel what depths music has sunk to now!!!!
Rest in peace!
May you find patience and peace too.
Ohhhh.. So so so sorry to know about your big loss.. Even if 19 years back. The memories can never grow old.
Regards from Delhi.

🙏🙏🙏 Wishing you peace dear dear brother.
Is gana suntehi maay rone lagte hun, kinu kon jane!!
It's my favorite too! Nothing to beat it!
In the opening when Lataji first sings ' O sajana', that itself is worth listening 100 times after rewinding it.
True 🙏😍
Very true
Oh Lataji, you are the Goddess of music! The melodious voice that God has gifted you is rarest of the rare! You infuse life into every song through your voice with immense range, flexibility and extreme sense of Sur and Bhaav, which no other singer can ever do!!! Your songs are an institution in singing for aspiring as well as professional singers! There can never be another Lata Mangeshkar, as that is what God willed! This song is based on his own original bengali song of Salilda Na Jeona rendered again by legendary Lataji!!!
Immortal song
Salil Da was once asked in an interview "which is your favorite song?"
The Indian Mozzart replied "Songs are like my own children, all are very dear to me. However if I were to choose, it may be a song like 'O sajna barkha bahaar aayee'".!!
i am generation of 90...and this film was made in 1960......but i dont know why this song touch my soul. Really timeless music, unmatched and unparalleled singing by the living legend Lata mam....and last but not least this song reminds me my mother ....

Wonderful composition of Salil Choudhary and beautiful singing by Lata. I'm listening to this song for more than 50 years and will listen till my lifetime.
They way Lata delivers her emotions brings me to tears evertime I listen to this timeless treasure!!

Sitar and Tabla and beautiful, sweet and melodious lovely voice of Lata. A magic no one can duplicate.

Kaal jayi?????
Lataji + Sadhnaji + Salilji + Shailendraji = Legendary composition of o sajna, which can't be forgotten for ages and ages. Today's composers like Tony kakkar should learn from those days composers and lyricists.
Ohh mannn...I have been listening to lata ji since i was 8 yrs..n till today after 19 years, I get the same effect full of mesmerization, respect n admiration everytime I listen her songs
one of the most remembered songs from my childhood. the tabla accompaniment is glorious. Only Salil Chowdhary

Salil Choudhary casually introducing western notes in a hindi classical 50s/60s song.. how classy can one be. What a composition 😊
perfect combination of meaninful lyrics, divine voice n melodious music
There are very few comments on lyrics which is soul of this song. Please remember the singer and composer can exhibit their talents only with good lyrics as base. I am not undermining the talents of Lata or Salil chowdhary but the lyricist need to get due credit. I do not see the name of the lyricist in most of the titles including in this. See the beauty of lyrics of great Shailendra which fits the situation like a glove. How beautifully he brings in the pathos and feelings of the character on a monsoon afternoon in his lyrics.
I always consider the lyricist and the composer as real artists. The creators. Singers are performing artists , the executioners 😀
