  • Clubhouse recording Day 07/12 w/ Win Without Pitching Manifesto author Blair Enns. This call, we focus on the proclamation "We Will Build Expertise Rapidly”. Make the claim of a specialization before you are 100 percent comfortable. It's okay to be aspirational.

The unspoken foundational tip he doesnt mention here is "know thyself"

One thing that Blair says in the WWPM (or one of the blog articles) that wasn't mentioned here is that the temptation of staying a generalist for the sake of a richer creative life is often based on an assumption that is not necessarily accurate.
At its root, the dilemma stems from the desire to spend one's time doing an assortment of creative things - it's the reason most creatives go into that field after all -, and the assumption is that once you specialize, your time will be spent doing mostly that one specialized creative task. However, this fails to take into account that by specializing, the professional can charge more for the time they spend on that specialized work, which in turn frees up more of their time to work on those more varied creative endeavors. So there's a conflation of the professional's "billable" time with their physical time, when in reality the time gained from being able to charge more for the billable work can be used much more freely on work that is more fun and meaningful as opposed to more client work that is underpaid.

Not necessarily More Work, but the Undesirable Work. There is a hustle culture going around, but being busy may not mean confronting your fears, doing what is needed to change your circumstances. That's the uncomfortable work. Some people just do more comfortable work to keep themselves distracted from the uncomfortable work that would change their circumstances.

One thing other than Blair's insight that everyone should take note from this video is the attitude Chris showed and maintained during the session. No matter how expert you might be, you still listen when people talk. The value of a talk comes from the speaker, but whether someone "get it" or not eventually comes down to how attentive he listens. That "lifetime learner" mentality fam, is one of the most important determinant , alongside grit attention and discipline, to determine your futur potential

At the start of the buyer journey consumers overvalue the creative and the possibility of success
Towards the end, they overvalue the cost of failure and the risks associated with the project.
I know this is one loose paraphrase but that content really had my mind like 🤯.

(In)tolerance culture in the sense of being the best in class is an interesting thought and goes against the norm in most industries. In my opinion, many organizations have the tolerance culture with the hope of everyone keeping up. The unfortunate problem is more resources and time could be wasted in just getting by and not striving for excellence.
Another interesting takeaway is the sticking a flag in the ground as being the best among others. This sound almost like Sun Tzu’s Art of War strategy of surveillance of the territory or market, being first, and dictating the rules of engagement. Regardless, it is spot on as there is a need to differentiate and stand apart from and ahead of the crowd or competition.

So when it comes to tolerant vs intolerant culture, I feel that the aspect of time has been omitted. For example, in the 'intolerant' culture, how much time do you give an employee after you invest in them in order for them to catch up and give their best performance? If this time is too less, the culture becomes one of constant fear. If the time is infinite, then it basically is a tolerant culture.

Thank you for the valuable and inspiring content. Interesting point and very “American” if I may say so. Try it in risk-averse Germany where you need at least a complete degree, certificates, work experience and proven examples of work to even start talking, not mentioning the claims of expertise. I guess your audience is mostly US-based but it would still be interesting to hear about comparison across cultures from people who worked in different countries. Especially when we talk about finding clients early in the buying cycle.

Interesting perspective, but very focused on one and only goal. There are so many motivations behind work that he only covers the desirability of making a career as a reference and thought leader. Some people would go for it. I can't. Because I know most of the time thought leadership is BS. Thought leadership has also two motivations: self-promotion or educational. Again, the first one is basically creating followers for $$$. The second one actually has a purpose. You can mix both, but claiming leadership just to claim is same as selling snake oil.

Very informative.. I searched for the book everywhere, I couldn't get the physical version for less than $41😅😅 but there's one question, I still didn't get whats the best option for any company's environment? To maintain a tolerant Or intolerant behavior? Or it depends on the goal of the company?
