It is incredible to see a video of him when he was younger like this. What fire to his playing. He is in complete command of the phrasing, articulation, and colors to bring this piece alive.
@@tileformilesTake note of the changes in timbre, tone colour, the phrasing. Hence the applause you see at rhe end. Over the decades up to 2010, a uniform sound had been prefered, with the result of having guitarists with a superficial technique, no strong apoyandos and a lack of sound quality, that they try to fix with the use of reverb... This is the best I have heard so far on a classical guitar
well i think he plays in the key of G, which is the piano version’s original key. didn't he retune the two lowest strings onto D and G? you find other arrangements in A major (lower A) or D major. his sound ideal is excellent, glass clear and a little naily.
I think that's the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard. I can't imagine how one writes such a piece or rather how one can imagine all these voicings and positions on the fretboard, but I suppose you write the music and then let the guitarist figure it out. Just remarkable. I was playing it on my LP--his Espana on Decca--and wanted to be sure it was just one guitar, no overdubs. Found this.
fingling8, indeed the man who wrote the piece, made it for the piano. just look for the Suite espagnole par Albéniz. also other parts of that suite got far better known by their arrangements for the guitar, like Cadiz and Asturias. sounding very very guitarlike, still composed by a pianist for the piano, not caring about just six strings or just nineteen frets.
This piece made me fall into a wormhole of classical study for almost 6 months when I was 17. Second favourite piece after a particular Sor study that I still playt to this day kn 2021.
Soooo beautiful. Doesn't matter much about the distortion. I've listened to this over 10 times this week. So musical. My favorite performance I've found of it. His early record of it isn't as good as this in my opinion - it's too fast. This is right on.
I think classica guitar is the rocket science genre of the music world. I love it but I think one got to be some sort of genius to play this well. I'll stick to my 3 to 5 chord rock playing. Thanks for the video
wow!! i'm very glad to see this Seville by Andres Segovia i thought the video on you tube all of Segovia music was done, here it is!! 1 of classic recital by the maestro.. my friend if perhaps do you have recuerdos by him? ! so far, thank you for uploading, i'm a huge fan of the maestro Segovia
When I was a kid developing an interest in guitar, we said someone who could pluck the strings with their fingers had "nice licks". I now know classical guitarist condition their fingernails with enamel and the best of them just barely "lick" the strings with their fingertips. Nice licks Andres.
Is it true that this is originally a piano piece and that Segovia himself arranged it for guitar? If so, I am just completely blown away by such genius.
It's a pity that the wax cylinder wasn't properly preserved for posterity. Italy, after all, a very hot place, and the wax just wasn't up to it! He was an all time great Guitarist, and the audio really does him a great injustice. It's a lot better than nothing, though, and it does communicate his virtuosity and passion.
I seen a little snippet of him doing chaconne in color, like it must have been restored and colorized or something. But it was just a two second clip in the middle of some other thing. I can't remember what they video was and I don't know what performance that part was from but I really wish I could see the whole thing like that! This is cool though! I'm just looking for the other thing again. You can't just go out and ask about Segovia around these parts, your just get a funny look... My first guitar teacher lives him though, but he still isn't aware of what in referring to.
Great post! I've seen a a little snipet of him doing Sevilla, i mean, it was like three seconds worth buried in some documentary, in color with better sound. But i mean...where the heck is that one at!?!?
Gabriel Mondragon Yes and i still i believe it as much as i like his playing. I would say the same about Segovia and his sometimes cristal and naily sound, and he is the one that made me love the guitar. The good tone production is very important and difficult thing to tame, so if the listener doesnt play the guitar can be ignored. But if you play it you already have some prefferences.
Julian, I was using a shitty pair of headphone and just got a good set. Believe me, it makes all the difference with these "potato" (ha, ha) recordings. This actually may be pre-potato. Also, putting the setting on the highest quality. This is pretty amazing as is that first movement of the Torroba Sonatina, which I always come back to when I think of what you said about personality in music.
At the time the only way to capture TV footage (almost all TV was live back then) was to put a film camera in front of a monitor recieving the live TV broadcast. It's called a kinescope, quality depends on the film, age, and storage conditions.
He displays his characteristic tone here quite well. Some parts are enjoyable but I find some of his phrasings and and exaggerated rubato quite awkward, especially in the B section.
Before the Segovia fan boys lose their shit, I think Segovia is a legend of classical guitar. However: No doubt the Bream version is influenced by this, but to anyone objective: Bream takes it to another level. Even accounting for the sound quality differences, the Bream version is just more expressive and tonally beautiful, and the middle section is streets ahead.
Segovia plays so beautifully, like a true Master, like a Maestro. But the old recordings and videos of his astonishing performances are so distorted with terrible sound quality. His legacy needs to be remastered with clarified quality recordings. Because he is a historical treasure of the 20th century. This is a request for a great "recording engineer" to begin an extremely valuable journey. Who wants the job?
2020 and still the best Version!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is history .....seeing el maestro like this is fantastic...........thank you
I love the key he plays it in! It seems sharper than the usual, and I actually really like the distortion. Mr. Segovia shall always be the best.

Is sharper because it's sped up
Grande Segóvia! Peça dificílima! Divino!

Bream is better

or just four grasping fingers
This piece was actually written for piano it is a transcription

meraviglioso!
the best version!!
This is how it is done!
Maestro.
Wonderful! See also Raphael Rabelo playing Sevilla. Fantastic too.
incomparable.

The best
I wish i had this sound guy for my performance
poor sound quality, but still charming, that proved something to me.
Grandmaster Andrés Segovia
THE MUSIC
+Alvaro Munoz-joy It's not a video problem, It's old and was recorded on reel lol, I'm also surprised this is still around.
master the master
Er spielt richtig gut
Live 1956 in Italia.

Como que um inseto dá deslike nisso
Is it true that this is originally a piano piece and that Segovia himself arranged it for guitar? If so, I am just completely blown away by such genius.
Yes, piano. Tarrega had done it, too, previously.

W O W
The loch Ness monster.

the distortion is so "rock-n-roll"
omg what a fucking god
At the height of his game.
Omg what a pitty the sound quality. Were they recording with potatoes at that time or what? come on! -.-

You like fools then? lol Then that's because you are also a fool hahahh :)

sabe todo los arcanos de la guitarra
No FEAR !!!
His time had long passed in this recording.
Really?
When was it recorded?
i dont believe there is footage of this!
i meant, i cant believe there is footage of this, because it's amazing
I knew what you meant
there's a problem with the quality of the video... that's for sure.
Anyone know the year this was recorded? Thanks for sharing!
He was playing a Ramirez, so at the beginning of '60. The concert was broadcasted by Italian television
1956
What are the size of those frets? They look huge for classical.
no just short fingers haha
