Since I know i'll get asked this, what SHOULD you do for the Panamerican? I haven't worn enough jackets to pick a different one, but here's what I would do:
1. Throw the liners in the trash can (Unless you are going to try to sell the jacket? for some reason?)
2. Buy a non-permeable rain suit of good quality.
3. Wear the Sand 3, or whatever jacket you like that fits you well and has good enough impact protection.
4. Little rain? cool you are good. Lots of rain? Stop under cover and put the rain suit on.
Or figure out a layering system that works for you, but definitely don't bring those useless liners.

Hi guys. I have recently replaced my Sand 2 with a Sand 3 and I don't like the new one as much! The fit, especially on the trousers is not as great. The pockets are bigger but maybe too big as things don't stay in place - but still a great all season suit if you are prepared to faff about with the linings. Probably still the best value 4 season suit.
Thanks for the honest review! All valid points, we fixed most of them in the new Sand 4 jacket. The liners are now designed to be separately wearable when you are off the bike. If you want to switch to a layering system we now have a new CE certified for road use adventure off-road collection. It is called the DIRT Series collection which features a modular layering system based on an armored protector jacket and waterproof or mesh shells that go over the armor. This collection offers more flexibitly for traveling through multiple climates on and off-road. Thanks again for the review. REV'IT!

Just found your channel and this review. I really appreciate the detail and blunt clarity of your commentary. And I agree, this is a real 'I've used it' review of its performance and what it is like to ride with and live with. Rev'it products are appealing but dauntingly expensive, and knowing what real-world advantages and compromises to expect is a massive benefit. Many thanks from the west coast of Canada.

Great review. It was practical, insightful, and ultimately helpful. Wish you had done this months ago, before I bought my Sand 3 set (a wish, not a complaint). Still, it gives me an idea about potential shortfalls and how to mitigate them. I'm a new rider (to both motorcycles and adventure riding), and the points about functional layers were well taken. I'll consider a fleece/hoodie and separate rain jacket.

Fantastic review. Really helped me to determine what to look out for on a jacket in general. Anything will be fine when you ride to work within an hour so really wanted to know what to look out for when you wear your gear for several hours non stop. Planning a 5 day trip in the UK next year. Best review I’ve seen of this jacket. I’m glad to see that the piece I ordered is able to stand up to abuse. That AA rating is nice, but nothing beats genuine experience for reassurance. Safe travels. At least as safe as one can be on two wheels.

Yep, throw em away and bring a rain jacket and thermal that makes sense when separated and the shell is decent outside my other criticisms. The issue is, is the shell worth the cost? Idk. I'm about to do the pants review and my conclusions were actually interesting all things considered

All the shops in COVID time are stunting as the Sand 4 is about to hit the warehouses. I got mine 200 dollars off ERP. They have absolutely listened, and the zip problem is gone. A button attaches the lower inner end with the inline of the jack. I removed the liners and stowed them away. I feel i need them only a few times a year in the Netherlands. Just wear a shirt and sweater. Thanks @Solo

At last someone who actually used the thing! I have spent so much time trying to find out about replacing my old DIANESE gear with a suit that fits me AND which is available in Australia! Everything from the KLIM Badlands Tiger Tank of a jacket; with the arm length of an Oranutang and a weight training program supplied free of charge and all the rest! Still looking. I will be watching all your reviews. Thank you very much and stay safe! Oops, I just noticed the post regarding the release of the 'Sand 4'. Mate Paul from Australia 🇦🇺 “ I 💯 % agree with you on the liner & rain ☔️ liner ( what is the point of the rain liner on the inside 🤔🤔 ) My go to ADV travelling 🧳 gear now is the KNOX Urban pro ( or the Utility Pro ) it’s SUPER vented , abrasion AA rated with D30 type armour . I use a compact warm jacket 🧥 over the top if required and a rain 🌧 proof over jacket and pants that I brought from a camping ⛺️ shop to put on if it rains

I bought the Sand 3 jacket and pants after getting my motorcycle license a few years ago. I've worn them for about 11,000 miles now. I haven't had any accidents while wearing them yet, but I'm glad to see how well your jacket held up and protected you. As you said, the front zipper can be a PITA if you're not careful tucking back the storm flap while zipping it. I never used the rain liners; I purchased an Olympia outer rain jacket and pants before my first multi-day trip. I leave the thermal liners zipped in during cold weather at home, and think they do a good job of keeping me warm, but I definitely wouldn't take the jacket thermal liner on a long trip, but would take a middle layer that could be worn under the jacket or separately. It would be nice if the included thermal liner was something closer to the REV'IT Core jacket. I'll probably just take a pair of long underwear or running tights instead of the pants thermal liner, when I go on a long trip.
In January, I gave notice at my job that I would be leaving to travel for a couple years. My last day was in mid-March, just when COVID-19 becoming a big problem in the US. My plans were to head down to Guatemala in October for 6-8 weeks of Spanish lessons, come home around Christmas, then spend the next year riding down to Ushuaia. Now I'm hoping that will be feasible to do in late-2021. Maybe in May 2021 I'll first do a trip up to Alaska. I've been thinking about getting the Hippo Hands Rogue for cold and wet weather riding.
Seems like you have a lot experience with this jacket. I am considering what to get for my Alaska trip this summer.
@@MotoPavilion It's what I would wear if/when I do an Alaska trip. If I was doing it over again, I think I would still get the Sand 3 jacket, although I might consider a pair of Rev'it GoreTex pants. I would prefer the additional breathability of the Sand 3 jacket over one of the GTX options, and it's not that hard to put a separate rain jacket over the top. I find that putting my rain pants on over my size 12 boots is a PITA though. GTX pants would be nice to have for light/medium rain, but I don't plan on buying any at this point.
@@pwschiller GTX is always less breathable. I was thinking to get rain jacket and a pant and use them over my regular gear
Great review…! I used to have the Sand 2 ( 35.000 km in 4 years) and I recognize your complaints with the zippers and the liners. I have had one zipper and waterproof liner replaced under warranty but had to wait for 6 weeks each. Also with al the liners zipped in its quite a snug fit and without any it’s quite a loose fit.
One major drawback is that when the outer shell gets wet it you get cold because of that heavy soaked shell hanging around your body with just a thin “waterproof” liner between the shell and your first and second layer. Also when you arrive at your destination it stays wet and dripping al over the place. The back protector only lasted 2 years or so, the layers fell apart just after the warranty. A big plus though for the ventilation. The complete Sand 2 was quite a bite out of the budget but I would have never bought again when stolen or so.
I’ve been looking at the Revit laminated GoteTex models and like the Sand they look good on paper but I just don’t trust them enough to spend a lot of money only to find out they don’t step up in real life travel and commuting.
Fantastic and credible review. Nice work. I live and ride in Colorado and we get afternoon storms. I use. Klim GorTex outer shell I just stop and throw on when it starts raining. I’m wondering what others on this thread feel about throwing on an outer shell Vs. messing with the inner liner. I am not in love with the liner on this jacket, but love everything else.

Great review. I have the Sand 3 jacket, and agree with nearly all your points. Never had any issue with the front zip.
I've binned the rain liner. Completely useless, as the jacket gets soaking wet. I use a GoreTex rainshell over the top. Everything stays dry. It takes 30seconds to pop it on.
The thermal liner is a waste of space too. Same point, you can't wear it on its own. I pack Craghoppers Venta Lite jacket, at least I can wear that as a destination jacket.
That combination gives me the greatest flexibility on tour. Of all my jackets, the Sand 3 is the one I'll pull out first.

Thank you for your honest review. I think too that most of the thermal liners e waterproof liners are useless and just add price to the jackets! I use to take them off and use rain coats and real thermal cloths instead! Keep up with to good and honest reviews.

I agree 100 %, what kind of genius put the rain liner inside of a heavy jacket instead of outside? Clearly in heavy rain you'll get totally soaked in water, plus getting a very heavy garment until it dries. Best to have a liner inside of a pocket to put outside of the jacket when the times call. The same with the very cheap thermal liner, no better than having a common polartec sweater inside.
You did a great review. As well as making great points. Honestly I think you would be a multi-millionaire if you can design a three-layer usable jacket. I am now thinking about buying my 3 set trying to figure it out!
From what people tell me the Klim jackets are worth it, they are just 1000 bucks. I feel like there has to be on the market layering gear that will actually work as intended with any existing shell, I may try to figure out a cheaper way to do just that.

I have run a Sand 2 for the past 5 years and haven't experienced these problems. Well ventilated for the south of France at 36 degrees C and waterproof and warm travelling around Scotland in freezing snow. I carry a Rev'It Cyclone over suit for emergencies but seldom use it. I totally agree about functionality of the layers which is probably why Rev'It no longer use thermal liners in their top range adventure jackets. I have washed my suit a couple of times with NikWax which restores the outer shell water resistance. Never had issues with the pockets although the velcro is starting to go and don't have an issue taking the liners out or replacing although it is a pain having to take your pants off in a village square - hence the Cyclone.
Seems like it's working for you! What kind of rides are you into? Ventation was not a problem for me, just probably not as good as a mesh jacket
I've the same Jacket and rode about 45.000 kms in it, wich is close to 28,000 imperial. And I do agree on a lot of the stuff you dislike about it, like the liners.
My biggest trustration is with the thermal jack. Because is it not fully zipped in, and only have 2 short zips on the top en 2 buttons on the bottom end.
I wished it was zipped in like the rain liner, from top to bottom. Because the button always come undone and you have to re-adjust it every time you put the jacket on.
I don't have the same problems with all the flaps as you do, but maybe I am so used to it that I don't notice it anyone.
In the cold I actually really like it, it does keep me warm in -4 C. And I don't think it is that cold.
But I again agree that is pretty useless if you don't need it, and for traveling I wear a puffy jacket under it instead. So I have something to wear in camp.
That is what the Adventure Spec layer system which you mention does too, or Mosko Moto. I think their layering system is spot on for traveling.
And that is the big difference, the AS and MM layering gear is made for traveling, the Rev'it! gear is mostly designed for commuting. Because that is what most people will do who are buying a Rev'it! jacket. They only chance the layers maybe once a day tops.
And about the front pockets, I think they even state in the specs that those are not waterproof, and only the inner napoleon pocket is.
I was thinking there were some drain holes in it even, but after checking I noticed only back pocket has those. I wonder why they left those out of the pockets on the front.
Overal I think I have pretty similar experience with the jacket as you do. I think it's the perfect jacket for commuting and maybe small weekend trips. Since you get pull of all the liners in 1 go.
But not so much for light weight traveling.
This is all spot on, I didn't actually hate it in the cold, but cold was definitely not the intended use case. This is a warm weather jacket, unless I was doing a desert trip, I would wear something else or carry a rain suit. I wish it worked better as an armor layer but it's just so thick and bulky that i honestly may retire it from my travel setup, which is a shame considering the cost! I even bought this jacket twice because the first one got stolen out of my Van when it still had the tags on! Such a waste of 1000 bucks...

It's super expensive but if it really works as advertised I'd say it's worth it 100%. Same with advspec.

I've also got a few tens of hundreds of miles on some gear and i agree with what you say. Nothing will ever be 100% perfect. Not even gore tex that, like it or not, makes you sweat like a pig when things get hot.
For me the best compromise is a ventilated jacked, a hoody for the cold, and real rain gear for the rain. And I've tried all the best gear.
Simple is always better, even if you sometimes don't look so cool in photos...
This is probably the only honest review of the jacket on the internet. Everyone else is so afraid of mentioning the faults because they will be blacklisted from further reviews and lose out on that sweet sweet YT money.
I have the Sand 3 jacket and pants and agree with everything said in this video. Leave both liners behind, no, throw them away so you don't mistakenly pack them. Use a light weight puffer under and Frog Toggs over your whole suit instead. Who puts a "waterproof" liner under the shell? I'm going to stop and take my jacket and pants OFF and get more wet to put in liners to stay dry?
Yeah like I think I said in this video it's almost like the people who came up with the standard issue adv setup have never actually gone on an adventure of any magnitude.

I have the same jacket, the warm liner I dont use it replaced by a fleece "jacket" and the rain liner I put it over the jacket because the jacket wont be soaked in water and take a long time to dry.
Yeah I tried that and had decent results.
When the sky really opens up though (like when I was in the cloud forest in Costa Rica) it doesn't really matter what you do lol 😂

Just one point on the rain, been from Brazil, where the rainy season is also the hot season, there is no way were a jacket can mange both (rain + heat) at the same time. You will need to wear a dedicated rain gear over the normal gear, espeacially because when it rains, its pours...
Wish I would have seen your actual review BEFORE buying mine. I was angry because I actually chose the jacket for the waterproofing capabilities. Well I was not served. I wrote to them and they responded but I would have to buy another jacket and pants and I am so hesitating. I mean, should I just buy an outer rain shell… and keep on with my life!? Whatsoever, I totally agree with the zip it is so frustrating and sometimes it takes me about 10mins to unzip it since it is so hardly stuck! Thanks for your honest review, really enjoyed !!!
Hey thanks a lot, yeah the consensus seems to be that this is the problem with pretty much all of these style of jackets. I tried putting a rain shell over the top and more often than not I just wore my rain shell under the jacket.
Neither work in a central American downpour or Patagonian Christmas storm but the shell on the outside was clear winner between those two options. 99% of the time with a normal level of rain for a normal duration the jacket was acceptable, I'm not getting hypothermia. However it seems like unless you go full goretex, it's either live with that reality or carry and put on a rain suit.
I may go into this when I build out my new setup and even do some layering tests.
Great review. Next time get a lamiated Gore-Tex jacked - I've been riding with a modestly priced one through pouring rain for days in Norway and was considerably dry for the whole trip.

I have had a Revit Eclipse jacket with me for around 2.5 years, its a black one, so its color is faded, I was expecting more from a jacket like this (not cheap)...
I am planning to buy a new one and I was considering the Tornado 3 or Sand 3 (ride in warm weather the most of time) models, but now that I have been checking more reviews I am not sure if I really want to continue with Revit.
What other jackets do you recommend guys?
Honestly I think most of them are really similar, they all have the same flaws. Bad weatherproofing, stupid useless liners, poor usability... I'm most intrigued by layering systems like Adv spec and Mosko Moto, but the price points are rough. I think I may try and build my own system using soft armor and durable outerwear, and see if that works out. It can't possibly be worse than what I've already purchased over the years and dual sport riding is a lot more forgiving from an abrasion and heat resistance standpoint. I'll keep everyone up to date on any tests I'm able to do!

@@SoloSouth Me too I want to build a light flexible dual sport gear for my 250Rally. Offtrack seems to suite it better cos the Safari 3 is heavier and more rigid
Yeah the sand 3 would be more jacket than you would want on that setup for sure. I really want to find a comfortable and easy to clean armor layer that I can add rain or cold or abrasian resistant jackets on top of depending on the situation and all things that function equally well on and off the bike but so far anything I've found in that hemisphere has been priced pretty ridiculously or looks like Chinese garbage. My next setup should look a lot like an enduro setup.

I had this jacket and am looking at going to the klim badlands pro now, but about the zip, yep its shit, but if you hold the zip with your thumb and forefinger and run your middle finger up the inside while zipping, its not an issue...
My Revit jacket (have about 40k miles on it over the last five years as a commuter, so it mostly just sees highway miles), the rain gutters leak across my chest. I did a three hour run in the rain last week and I froze my ass off (shopping for a new coat, so it’s nice to hear somebody had the same problems).
I have to agree, the insulation layer is worthless (I rode at 20F and I was shivering and miserable by the time I made it the 30 miles to work, but it starts getting cold to ride in at anything under 45F... I think I remember it being slightly better when the coat was new), I constantly have to keep resealing the rain layer. I’m warmer when I put a hoodie under my coat versus the rain layer/insulation layer. I have other summer-weight coats I wear, so I never wear the Revit once the temperature comes up as I didn’t think it vented that well.
My Speed and Strength ‘Off the Chain’ is a great late spring/summer/ early autumn coat. The Revit I bought for autumn/winter and I was disappointed compared to my old Olympia jacket (better insulation, better rain layer. the Revit has lasted longer, but the Olympia was $200 cheaper).
That said, the entire back of the jacket is stained red (cat knocked over a coat tree and it landed on my wine glass). So light colors can stain.
When I stop for gas, the Velcro on my pocket is so shot that it doesn’t seal anymore (lost my wallet on the road, thankfully noticed and recovered it, but I’ve been paranoid ever since). The phone pocket has done a decent job of keeping the rain out. (Mostly).
The sleeves are kind of annoying as if I put my arm down, the rain drains into my gauntlets.
I ride the PNW, so rain is pretty much a daily deal. I have to separate the layers every time I come home when I spend more than a half hour in the rain or it gets that mildew smell that haunts heavy coat. I might suggest getting a Scuba diver’s hanger for the coat as it handles the weight and opens the jacket up a little bit so it can vent.
Ironically, for pants, I’ve been wearing the same pair of FirstGear riding pants for almost 8 years. I spray a little sealant on them about twice a year and they have held up better than any other piece of gear I’ve owned. That said, I kinda hate they way their coats look. 😓
Yep, this is a pretty standard real world experience with these jackets. Ironically I also had little to no issues with my (cheaper) pants! I'll make that video
Great and much wanted review. Perhaps the Revit Horizon 2 would be more up the alley with its extra big airvents and - more importantly - being laminated so it doesn't soak up all the water to freeze you to bits.
I'm a bit miffed that it's so hard to find proper reviews of these kind of vests.. Like you said: almost none have actually used them.

Hi, I've got one of these jackets and have put about 15K miles on it. Everything you say is spot on. I tend to spray the jacket in Nikwax a couple of times a season rather then use the liner. I have found the thermal liner poor in all year UK riding as well, so used another thermal jacket inside. It is still a good jacket though because these faults are common to this type of jacket: the liners are made to a price. I haven't come off whilst using it but it is well built and I have bought a good quality and large back protector. I've only used it in hot weather up to 32C and had I not been wearing a Kriega rucksack with camelpack, which covered the front and back vents, I can see it would vent well. Can I ask the type of temps you were using it in hot weather? I want to use it in August in a Balkans tour, rather then buy any specialist hot weather gear. Thanks mate.
Hey thanks man, ahhhh worst was probably mid nineties full humidity in El Salvador or mid hundreds in Colombia (less humid). Doesn't really matter all that much what you are doing in those conditions, it's gonna be hot and gross. In el salvador you would be covered in liquid walking 10 ft in the shade. Venting is also pointless you just have to get used to it lol. The jacket did well in the heat IMO
One thing is for sure no jacket is perfect and waterproof material does not make a jacket waterproof, there are so many places water can get in.
The one problem I always have is the water coming up from the bottom of the jacket, I think it is mainly because of turbulence and some bikes are better than others so it makes little difference to the jacket.
In over 40 years of riding the biggest game changer for me has been Gortex, by a long way, expensive and does leak over time, I am so impressed by my Klim jacket and pants, they have finally thrown in the towel in the waterproof department but that was after 4 years of wearing nearly everyday for up to 10 hours a day.
As for the liners I am with you throw them away, you need to stop the water from soaking into the jacket material, it makes it heavier and takes an eternity to dry out, definitely have a light waterproof jacket over the top, same for the pants, especially in heavy or constant rain.

Yeah my friend Clayton has the Klim Goretex jacket and he stayed a LOT drier than I did, and he says he has no complaints with it... So maybe we all need to wear 1000 dollar jackets? Idk but someday I'd love to test the theory. Thanks for the great comment!
If you live in a tropical country and the heat index can hit as high as 50 degrees celcius, forget the liners, you won't even wanna wear a jacket or ride at all.

Tbh the heat wasn't actually that bad at any point. I wore a tank top and the jacket opened up all the way to the bottom buttons and it was fine. All 5 of my every day items I wore were pretty solid, the pants I have a video on, the others were my forma adventure boots, klim nak pak, and scorpion at950 helmet.
Thats why I've separate raingear only(gloves,overboots,rain jacket and pants) Saved me plenty of times.
I just bought the sand 4, and you can actually wear the rain liner on the outside of the jacket

Very good review. Ich wear the Sand 3 for a few years and ich like the jacket. Yes, the thermal liner is thrown away at first and the front zipper problem is always a point. But if it´s a maximum anoying problem for you, why don´t you fix it by yourself?
Why I also be very disappointed ist the back protector. It is a certificate of poverty for all the manufacurers, to sell it separately. It´s a shame!!!

@@SoloSouth Im going in the dry season, so yeah, there will be 1 day of rain / per month. I will do some more research, but yeah mesh jacket+ rain coat + warm fleece in case it gets cold at night is my current plan.

Outer rain shell is fine but enjoy carrying around a huge item for months or years that you almost never use. That's the issue there. I didn't have a big problem with heat even in el salvador where the ocean is 89 degrees... As long as you have vents and you are moving you'll be fine I'd say

Perfect product would be like the revit sand 3 with all the protection but a gortTex outer shell. And than a seperate jacket (very small patagonia e.g) to have in the saddlebags for every day and off the bike but also for underneath when riding in cold conditions.

Haven't done a ton of research yet but I am actively looking at layering solutions that don't cost an arm and a leg. I think a solid shell like the sand 3 and a rain jacket and packable down layer is totally fine. It's really the reliance on the stupid included layers that sucks ass. Whatever I come up with before my next tour will be posted here and laid out.
I have a similar jacket to the Sand 3 and I also thru away all liners. I rode up the Alaska Highway in pouring rain late last summer and just used an extra large cheap rain jacket that I would wear over the top of the jacket. Worked like a charm! It even kept water from spraying up my arms, so my torso stayed dry, which was good as it was about 3-4 C temp. I just stored the jacket with my tent bag. Weighs nothing and is a life saver when needed. In regards to liners I use a thin Patagonia synthetic jacket. When it gets cold I put on a down vest and then when it gets colder I put the rain jacket over the top of everything. For wind protection I carry a windbreaker that I wear as a liner that weighs a couple ounces.
I like the aspect of your review that demonstrated the excellent protection of the Sand 3. Gonna look hard at getting that jacket as there are good sales on it currently.
One of the most interesting reviews. I agree with you that most reviews out there are worthless. I am 55 and I have changed more than 10 touring jackets in my motorcycle life. All your frustrations are the same as mine. Inner layer for water proofing does not work! Inner thermal liners like this one does not work! The only jacket that comes close to your needs (and mine) is from the Italian brand Tur (part of Tucson Urbano). Check it out.

It's a very "euro" cut, I'd almost call it slim fit compared to other jackets I tried on and owned. I'm a small, and that's what I normally wear and this was perfect.

Living in a country with crazy monsoon downpours, we hv long accepted the fact that nothing will ever keep you dry in heavy torrential rain. All that weatherproof gear could ever hope to do is just keep the worst off you. That's how we all roll in the rain.

I have similar, multi-layered jackets and have learned that taking 3 seconds to zip them up is better than trying to take 1 second, experiencing failure and raising your blood pressure to 300psi. Take some deep breaths and accept that 2 seconds aren't much time.

I live in Nha Trang, Vietnam and I need maximum ventilation and (occasionally) rain gear. Separate rain gear makes more sense and is inexpensive. I've got Oxford Rainseal which kept me dry crossing from Dalat to Nha Trang in the mountain rainstorms that are almost always there. I've heard good things about Scott Ergo rainwear. For the same reason as not liking liners, I'm not interested in laminated fabrics (waterproof/windproof) that you find in high-priced "Adventure" gear. No, thanks.
It's your video but I wouldn't give the jacket 5 stars for safety. It should lose one star for not including a back protector, for sure.

@@SoloSouth well, you were probably riding all day, right? I was just in the rain for maybe 1 hour, so I stayed dry. When I used to ride in Saigon (daily, all year). I'd just wear beach clothes and a plastic poncho. I'd still be soaked in 15 minutes but my clothes were minimal.
Yeah I was riding all the time but I shredded a few of those ponchos and broke down and got a vinyl rain suit and it was awesome, still have it! Not gonna lie I was probably in flip flops half the time and the rain was so warm I didn't really care. Those were amazing times, I cried when I left ha giang, it certainly planted the seed for everything I do now.
