I can't tell you how many times I have come back to this video. I have to keep getting new computers for work and each time I need to fix my VLC player. This is always my go-to video. THANK YOU!
Thank you. Good, strait to the point video. Worked great. Just remember when saving this file to choose "All Files" from the drop down menu as apposed to (default) ".txt" for the file to be saved in the ".lua" format.
hey, new comment on an old vid but: anyone else having the issue where this worked temporarily but after a few days, the issue is back? uninstalled and reinstalled VLC, and tried this method again on the new install but no luck :(
On Apple Mac, with VLC Version 3.0.16 Vetinari (Intel 64bit), this worked. First, I found "youtube.luac" inside the VLC.app file (as I guessed). In macOS, .app files are packages - which are like file systems in their own right, presenting to Finder (the mac file browser) as sub-folders of the folder the app is located in. With VLC not running, one can (as administrator, at least) gain read and write access to items inside it by app-file > right-click > Show Package Contents. On my Mac, the location of the "youtube.luac" file was [/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/share/lua/playlist]. There, I pasted the new "youtube.lua" file, then renamed the existing ".luac" file to "youtube.NOT-luac". I was then able to play the YT video just fine.
The strange thing is, I only started using VLC recently with the newest update and it streamed a number of UA-cam videos before it suddenly stopped working. Tried your fix, to no avail. I even tried installing an older version of VLC, and unchecked the automatic update option. Looks like someone doesn't want VLC to play UA-cam videos at all.
i think it's a vlc version thing, auto-updates ruined the functionality. haven't looked into it again since the last fix was found, haven't been needing to use vlc for streaming youtube videos. hope there is an updated fix somewhere :/ would hate to have to downgrade vlc just to keep being able to play youtube videos on it. i think it also depends on the video settings, only some play (maybe some sort of DRM against people downloading stuff with copyright music or not publically listed)
@@psenough I'm a teacher struggling now that this doesn't work. Do you have any suggestions for downloading UA-cam videos for PowerPoint? I'm trying to avoid having to screen record seeing as it's so time consuming. VLC was my go to and now I'm lost! Thanks for any info you can provide!
A very big THANK YOU. This solved my problem. Your instructions are perfectly clear and very precise. It is difficult for a student to fail when the teacher is very competent. Sincerely, your Padawan.
You're a legend my friend, been off and on trying to solve this for a week, watching videos on my browser; in pain. I'll name my second born after you. In all seriousness thank you! Much appreciated, to the point 10/10 video.
Still applicable on 3.0.18, sadly. Thanks for the fix! In my case only the .luac file was present, but as you said, deleting and replacing with the .lua file from the latest github source worked.
Nice thx it solved my problem, too. If someone using scoop (a command line package manager for windows), There you just navigate to your scoop installation and pasting your file inside "...\scoop\apps\vlc\current\lua\playlist\"
I tried this and it didn't work. I think youtube's done something new because videos ive watched on VLC yesterday don't work today. Maybe there needs to be a new fix?
Read the comment at the very top here; it doesn't look like it will be fixed anytime soon: github.com/videolan/vlc/commit/90dcfa0e78081770ecbd0a072b96a277aea4a214
Still works... partially. I had to install the nightly version of vlc altogether and then replace the youtube.lua. The regular version just didn't worked anymore with ir. Thank you so much.
Excellent video, however I am with the other person who commented; save the file type as "All types." I had to troubleshoot this step myself, and reviewed the comments after I fixed it.
VLC seems to have stopped working for any UA-cam music videos that I try to play. This has happened before and music videos started working again. Also maybe 1/4 of other random non-music video don't work. Much more than usual.
this tutorial is informative, short (thumbsup), mostly precise, and the result works on my PC at the moment, although it's not pro, I wish I could do some at least half as good as yours
Works great except now I'm having issues with buffering. The youtube video plays a little, buffers a lot, plays a little, buffers a log, plays a little... tried to change the network caching but it still doesn't play without mucho pauses.
I wasn't able to get it to work. I followed all of your instructions and copied the code to notepad. One thing I noticed differently from yours was the youtube.lua file I created in notepad shows up as a text document when I copied it to the playlist folder instead of a LUAC file like you have. How do I copy the code into a LUAC file format instead of a Text Document format? I'm using Windows 10 home version. Thank you for your time.
I had the same concern but solved it. For me it was a simple save mistake. When you type in youtube.lua at the "File Name:" there is drop box just below called "Save as type:" and make sure that reads "All Files". Hope this works for you as well.
1. How do you choose what resolution the youtube video plays at in VLC? 2. Does the title of the video appear in playlist after adding it , without me needing to click on the link for the video to start playing and only then the title appears? 3. Does a thumbnail picture appear for every video youtube link after adding it(again without me needing to click the video link)?
humm. did not really fix the problem. I have vlc Version 3.0.17.3 Vetinari (Intel 64bit) on mac. when I pasted the URL and clicked open it just went to the drop media here and never played. I did the lua thing (on my mac all he .lua files are .luac and are inside the actual application) and it now shows the url as a playlist but it says the duration is 0:00 and I just can't get the file to play. my search continues sadly
After searching for a solution for an hour, this method indeed worked. However, I first had to change settings such that renaming of the file truly changes the file type. Without it the .lua file remains as a .txt file and won't work.
Hey, this was working fine for me but all of a sudden i wasn't able to get network stream at all, no errors or nothing. If you have a solution please tell me
I used notepad saved it and put it where you said but yours turns into a LUA file when you hit save even tho it just said txt file how do i get it to change to a LUA file?
In the normal programme files, when I clicked on VideoLan it showed empty folder. And also after doing it in the programme filex86 I m still not able to stream
YT works diligently to always come up with new cryptic algorithms to break VLC playback of YT content. it seems to break every year, going back at least five or six years if memory serves me.
@@dragonlord0666 Ermmmm from memory the issue I had was the filename and type of file it was being saved as. Once I had managed to change not just the file extension but the actual type of file to pure TXT it worked for me. Hope this helps.
The reason some people arent getting it to work is because OP doesnt specify the file save as. DO NOT save it as txt file. Click drop down below save name and save it as All Files.
Didn't work for me...Followed each step just as you did but it still won't do anything when I try to play youtube videos. Is it possible that I have a program like an antivirus or my ISP is able to block it? It used to work fine months ago but I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it and what you showed in the video. I had the same issue with Any Video Converter, it just stopped connecting to youtube.
@psenough :I can't save your video. It plays. I try to download your video. While your video is playing on VLC, I go to Tools, Codec information then copy the location and past it on the new URL. However, your video shows only on You tube page.,Not on the VLC ,So I cannot save your video or three is mo save option shown like older vision.

Good point, I got into a hell of a mess a few years ago by saving as a ".txt" file and had to get Microsoft's help to sort out the mess!
thank you! I came to the comments to find what I maybe did wrong and that was exaclty it, youtube playback now working perfectly :)

Good job. Vlc was getting inconsistent with youtube streams for a while. This is a good fix. Thanks.
Worked flawlessly on 3.0.18. Thank you!
Came here with fresh install of VLC 3.0.18 and this vid solved the problem that seem still exists.
