  • The big LT finally makes it onto the Handy 1200 motorcycle lift for a little TLC. I'll show you some of the finer points of the 'Luxury Tourer' which is what LT stands for. Then we'll have a look underneath at the engine and give it all a bit of a clean and general tidy up in preparation for the first outing of the year.
    Thanks for watching, Alistair.

    Hey Alistair, I wish you the best of luck with your Bayer 1200 LT. I have two friends who owned this touring bike in 1998. (new model year 2004) = I remember that they were equipped with an electro-hydraulic centerstand pump with which the centerstand could be unfolded while sitting on the bike. On the other hand, I always had to ask their help to lift my Kawasaki Z 1300/6 on its center stand, especially when we were loaded on vacation (they always had funny comments & had fun, even today). This K 1200 LT super luxurious full size Touring machine was certainly a great bike for that time. I cannot remember that we had a breakdown with these motorbikes during our travels (mostly East Anatolia and the Greek islands). I am sure many current-today motorcyclists do not know this, that this very practical electro-hydraulic centerstand already existed. We are surprised that you do not mention this in your otherwise good comments ... please can you demonstrate this on the UA-cam channel (if yours is a 2004 model)? You are doing well, stay healthy! Greetz from Belgium. 👍

      Hi Marco, unfortunately my LT is 1999 and not equipped with the Hydraulic centre stand. I don't know if you noticed but it doesn't have heated handlebar grips either. It is the only BMW that I have ever seen without heated grips.

    Lovely bike Alistair, didn't realise it had reverse gear, a mile muncher. Almost as bad as the Pan for taking the plastic off, thankfully I don't need anything off for servicing.
    I know what you mean about selling stuff, that's why I have 5, lol.

      Jim Hunter: What you complain, taking the plastic off ??? The plastic to the Pan European ???
      I have a Pan ST 1100 and a ST 1300 renewing their air filter took very easy work ... 1/2 hours for me. Changing the air filter on my GL 1800/2018 requires work all day long. That's a piece of plastic together (LOL).The fact that Honda engineers still make something like this today is really very sure of date! They really should be ashamed of themselves.😡... I am not an engineer! But replace an air filter? Come on ... I wonder what Honda's shops charge for this today? 👍 Kind regards Marc.

      Jim Hunter: Yes not only a reverse ... but also (practical) an electro-hydraulic centerstand pump with which the centerstand could be unfolded while sitting on the bike! = since model year 2004 👍

    You hide this one well. Buitifull piece of kit. I must confess, I had to stop the vid half only to advertise a kidney on Ebay. Apparently they don't have a section for it. I thought it would be in the motorcycle section.
    Again I love the vids and of course the banter that goes with it.
    Hears looking forward to the next one. Take care Alistair.

    I've owned a K1200GT what a great engine huge power and torque, but beware of the clutch and massive fuel consumption, rarely could I eek out more than 35mpg ouch! Your average speed of 35mph is the normal considering starts and stops. These older BMW's look great even after high mileage, many other manufacturers could take note!

    • @AlistairCampbell1047cc
      @AlistairCampbell1047cc  3 роки тому +1

      Bloody hell John, 35mpg is a bit rough! As I said, the LT runs on a sniff of petrol. I'm very aware of the clutch since I watched North Illinois BMW owners(Kirk Johnston) replacing one. Such a job, it's a weeks work. Thanks for commenting.

    Amazing machine but not for me I like to see an engine on a motorbike and that looks to me too much like a scooter quite ugly
    Now I love that machine next to it the six cylinder 6 exhaust that is beautiful. Nice to have so many bikes. I have had CB 750 BSA 500 Norton Commando 750 Fastback Triumph trident

    Just got myself a K1200LT 1999. I noticed you have a tomtom sat nav mount, how is it attached to the handlebar please?

    • @AlistairCampbell1047cc
      @AlistairCampbell1047cc  Рік тому +1

      Hello Eerie Biker, the mount came from a company called Hornig BMW. They specialize in parts for all BMW's . The mount is fitted into the hole on the switchgear (left or right) and secured by a nut. The main drawback is that when the Tomtom is mounted, it completely obscures the mirror, which is why I have the handlebar end mirror on my bike. Here's a video of the mount. ua-cam.com/video/ijj2xqaujJc/v-deo.html

    A real space age machine with many luxuries but way out of my budget, looks like you got an absolute bargain condition/mileage wise, you are a connoisseur of the motorcycling world and appreciate these things but don't you find that there is a slight sense of cars and bikes merging here, you can't see the engine, it is enclosed like a car - maybe that is a good thing as it makes for smooth airflow. A world away from the raw bike look i grew up with, of course i have moved in that same direction with the xj900f i have like yours but somehow the bmw behemoth feels a step too far to me. however, each to their own and you like it so that is all that matters and good luck to you, i enjoyed the video, a fascinating tour but another planet, to me as it were. love your videos, no offence intended naturally and i hope you don't mind me saying what comes to mind. sometimes I visit m/bike showrooms and it seems that bikes are now getting unrecognisable from my day, sculpted and pointy, everything homogenised into a single 'missile like' shape, old age is a terrible thing.

    • @AlistairCampbell1047cc
      @AlistairCampbell1047cc  3 роки тому +1

      Ian, thanks for your comments. I take no offence at all and I totally agree with you on the Car/bike merger. To be honest riding the LT feels more like driving a car than riding a bike. Even the clutch is a dry single plate as opposed to the more normal wet, multi plate clutch and the protection from the elements afforded by the fairing does cut you off from the normal biking reality of cold chest and stiff neck. I hadn't intended buying an LT but I had been doing a little window shopping on ebay looking for a GS when this bike appeared. The condition of it and the lengthy description, coupled with lots of very detailed photos swayed my opinion. It was a one owner from new bike and the previous owner had every receipt from new, including the original purchase receipt. It cost him £13k in 1999 and I got it for £4,250. It was too good to turn down. There was not a mark on it, it may as well have been new. My problem is that I'm not good at selling, I tend to keep things for ever!(Gonna need a bigger garage)
      I'm also in agreement with you on the modern bike scene. I stopped looking at new models over 20yrs ago. I have no doubt that there'll be some future classics amongst them but I'll leave that for the next generation of bikers to figure out.
      Glad you're enjoying the videos. Alistair.

      @@AlistairCampbell1047cc well that was a good price! it isn't just the look of the current crop, another consideration is fuelling, as i am sure you know. a friend who buys new has had issues with a jerky, hair trigger response at lower speeds with the last two bikes he has bought. my feeling is that is just the way they are now with not too successful attempts at reducing emissions with a lean mixture. i do like the new katana though, i don't know why but somehow it has something of a 'proper bike' look. yes, why not keep your bikes if you can, it saves that awful regret feeling many of us get when we part with an old friend.

      Ian Not sure where you are at, but I am in the US and just bought an 03 with 46k miles and paid $3000.00 us dollars and thought I stole it from the seller! Since I bought it in the winter, I have done nothing more than work on it to change all of the fluids and mount some auxiliary lights on it. 3 big negatives to this bike is (1) weight! It is a heavy beast. (2) Its a nightmare to work on, all of the plastic has to come off to do anything and the design to simply change the air filter is STUPID! (3) The mirrors are known to just fly off for no reason. Poorly designed!!!! But once on the road and moving, it wants to simply just go!!!
