That's why I've always been the one to look supposed authority figures in the eyes, and inform them that they don't decide what I will do or won't do. At this point in time, those teachers have all hired me several times and have admitted that they were wrong. I read the book in high school and it was a darker story about a girl whose familial life was crumbling so she was coping in really unhealthy ways by self-destructing in her personal life, notably through casual sex with the guy who made her feel bad about her body because he called her the DUFF. I don't understand why they made Toby a complete asshole in the movie. From what I remember of the book, he was very sweet and actually liked Bianca and wasn't too fussed about her friends. He was a sweet little music nerd. It's like they toned down Wes's doucheyness and gave it to Toby. Also Madison wasn't even in it (she was in a companion novel) and * SPOILER* B and Wes were FWB's so their attraction to each other was more convincing and developed. They basically took the concept, kept the character names and book title but changed the plot.

I haven't read the book so I can't truly judge, but I just read the synopsis and I HATE the sound of Wes in the book. It sounds like he makes B feel bad by calling her the DUFF and then basically takes advantage of her spiraling self confidence and unstable home life to have casual sex with her. Even if they end up together in the end, that sounds gross and unhealthy. He doesn't sound nice in the least, he sounds like a very realistic depiction of a manipulative, opportunistic man who uses women. It sounds like a good book and I'm tempted to read it now

@@zigzaglychee7324 Ya his character was a lottttt different. Though he did improve he was a gigantic asshole for a lot of it. I will say though, he didn't know about her home life until well after they started sleeping together so it didn't really play a factor in it but you're definitely right about the self confidence part. I can't tell you how much I felt this. My mom started writing books when I was 15, and has written like over 20+ books (maybe even 30 by now). As the oldest AFAB kid/daughter of my family, I was the one who raised my younger siblings while she was writing. (We were homeschooled, so I was also paid to help teach them [until my parents stopped paying me, promised to pay me back later, and paid only about 10% of what they promised, but I digress]). She wanted absolutely nothing to do with me unless she could talk to me about her book(s) or I could be of use to her in some way.

This kind of applies to all movies like this, but the balls to casually call someone ugly/fat to their face then zip the fuck up when that person is getting bullied by like ten people is truly unhinged behavior
Edit: i know he explains that DUFF is just a title & not necessarily literal, but like. still. I’d be shocked if someone was like “you’re the designated ugly fat friend, obviously. oh, but that doesn’t mean you’re LITERALLY ugly or fat. you’re just not as good as your friends. oh, and it’s your job to get me and the boys in with them, so how about it?”

For me this was definitely one of the better teen movies. I really like the characters in this, but I felt like the story and some of the details were a bit off. Like you said I think they should have done more with the friends. When I was in school I was in a friendship group where we had whatever the opposite to a "DUFF" is. Designated Really Attractive Friend? She knew this quite well and was really arrogant about it. It got to the point where she thought she was the leader of the group and had rules like who we couldn't date and who we had to date, but everyone just ignored her and did whatever they wanted. She also believed that every guy who talked her was in love with her and likes to mention she has a boyfriend every chance she gets. I think it's safe to say she was crazy.

and yes, I echo the others, I read the book many years ago, and found it more insightful and fleshed out than the movie, even though the movie is light hearted fun that I don't take it too seriously

Oh man this brought back memories. I don't remember a lot about the book or movie, but I remember being kind of obsessed with both for a while because I've related to that for a long time. Even when I was a kid back before romance was on anyone's mind, I was a chubby, hairy Latina kid with short hair and a mustache. People talked to me sometimes. I had friends kinda. I wasn't always bullied but even at the best of times nobody ever really seemed to want to be that close with me. We'd laugh and tell some stories when we happened to run into each other, send a few meme and that was it. I didn't even realize at the time but it really seemed like most groups I was in treated me kind of like a pet. I was a gateway to my friends like I was their agent and sometimes I found it fun and like I was included. But sometimes things are slowly hurting you without you realizing

it's HILARIOUS how I LOVED this movie when I was younger, I thought it was great. Now that I'm older though, I know that I'd probably dislike it a little more. This movie really tried to make me feel like the main character was ugly, AND IT ALMOST WORKED. This movie, instead of making me feel really empowered made me actually feel WORSE about myself because being the Duff isn't fun, and knowing you're the Duff is even worse, seeing a girl like Bianca and knowing that she is ostracized for how she looks, compared to her friends, in the film, where does that put me? someone who isn't white and is quite a bit heavier than her.
    on a lighter note.

Just thinking out loud and I'd be curious to know if anyone else kind of feels this way, but I can really and truly say that I've had plenty of duff moments in my life...still do actually. I definitely agree that media is a bit of cesspool of capitalizing on people's insecurities, but some of these tropes are at least partly based in some messed up version of truth.
I used to dance a lot and we frequented this salsa bar. It never failed that they would have people invite them to dance all night. We go hang out and I've literally been bumped out of the way as someone tried to approach one of my friends. Now look, I keep myself up, I consider myself a bit of a fashionista so I am always tidy and put together, but boy those moments sure do stick with me even now in my 30s. Unfortunately, I think it's a wider societal issue, not just media. Media is just a byproduct. And, sometimes I think women weaponize it against each other occasionally.
I think at the end of the day, the duff label might be largly self ascribed because of no external positive feedback. My friends are great and supportive and have never made me feel less than, but it was and is hard not wonder when the rest of the world isn't equally validating.
    Great vid, BTW!!!

I hate the stereotype and interestingly enough this isn't a critique on the movie since a lot of movies do this and I've never actually watched this movie but to tell you what stereotype I'm talking about is that when a man or woman doesn't fit into the beauty standard they have to be just the most sweetest nicest person and there's nothing wrong with being a good person but there are many of movies where if a person does fit into that beauty standard they can be mean , cruel controlling and pretty much a bad person but as long as they give a barely good apology always forgiven because they're "pretty" but if you're not quote on quote "beautiful" and the absolute nicest person your made out to be a villain and pretty much unredeemable in most cases
idk why this review made me go on this rant but I felt like it needed to be said

This rant fits Descendants 3 perfectly. The things that the 'villain' did in the third one. Only to apologise and be forgiven girl pls.

I understood Wes' explanation of the DUFF, but honestly it should be given a title that DOESN"T include "fat" or "ugly".
I know a teen wrote the original book, but still.....
    OOF.

the author didn't come up with the name, she heard about it and wrote her book based off of it.
