When I first tried it, the nicotine was overwhelming for me. I’m a cigar guy, and I still couldn’t get over the nicotine level. I instantly got that feeling in my throat/chest and started sweating. Then I tried it again, and again, and again. By the 10th bowl or so, I came to love it. It’s always satisfying, always flavorful, always smokes to ash, and it goes great with a cup of black coffee. It’s a top 5 blend for me for sure.
Yep, 100% agreed.
It’s such a better smoke after finishing the book by Christopher Morley that it was named for
Been trying to get deeper into Burleys for a while. Yesterday was my first sampling of Haunted Bookshop and while it did not "bowl me over" it did call to me on a different level. I am glad to hear you say that it took a little while before it really got you. So.... I will be trying it a few more times. thanks
Try Briar Fox
It’s burley n bright Virginia
That’s it
It’s a clean smoke
Tastes fresh but then, towards the middle, it develops a deeper flavor and you start getting hints of chocolate and molasses..
Briar Fox is simple but elegant
Great video Sonny I had the exact same experience’s with the haunted book shop. Ya it grows on you
Yes it does!
Hi Sonny,
I have been watching your videos for some time now and they are great. I live in the Netherlands and unfortunately it is becoming increasingly difficult to buy pipe-tobacco online here.Cornell and Diehl is not available here at all, but recently I can order it via a site in Germany where Haunted Bookshop is also for sale. I'll definitely will try it! By the way .. Your Rossi is indeed a beautiful copy of a Savinelli 673. Actually it's a Savinelli.(So smoking Haunted Bookshop in your Friday Rossi? Even it isn’t Friday ..😂)
Thank you for your video’s and greetings from the Netherlands👍👋
Thanks for being here! Glad you’re enjoying the content and I hope you’re able to get some Haunted Bookshop!
Hi! Can I ask which is the shop in Germany? I live in Sweden and we have a hard time getting anything here.
My excuses for the late answer. I only see it now. Coincidentally, I received a tin of Haunted Bookshop ( Cake) today but the store that has even more Cornell and Diehl is: Tabak Kontor in Leipzig. Very nice people. Order online and they will send it to you. You can also call for questions. Greetings from the Netherlands
You have one of the best intros in the entire YTPC! Dave
Thank you so much!
I think it really depends what pipe you smoke it in. I found that it works really well in my thick walled dunhill. The thing is a monster and stays pretty darn cool.
Nice, its always good to go back and try a blend again even if it doesn't suit you at first.
So true!
Hey Sonny.
You are a great American and thank u for reviewing one of my favorite blends. It’s also the PERFECT blend to break in a pipe with. Also haunted pirate ship yada yada. Happy Halloween. Ray at NAPS.
I appreciate that! Always good to have the NAPS heathens here.
Great videos man! Like your chill style!
Glad you enjoy it and I’m very glad you’re here!
Have you tried Pegasus? I'm sure you have, but I like that a bit more personally.
Haha I like HBS too. Though my only complaint is the "room note". I smoke in the work truck and holy F it smells strong. I agree it smoked different in a cob. I like it best in a wide clay bowl. IDK what you do for work but what do your co workers think of the smell? Cheers
My coworkers and I work completely separately lol. We see each other first thing in the mornings and that’s about it. Lol
Yep, HB could be an all day every day blend for me, too…if I hadn’t stumbled on the Black/Brown Irish Twists.
Haunted Bookshop is an all day. Between that and OJK.
I've got that 8673 Rossi in the Notte finish. It smokes better than my Savinelli 673 Roma Lucite(Friday Savinelli)
Happy Smokes!
Like you I hated haunted bookshop at first. I almost threw out the first tin.. Now I love the stuff... great review 👏
I absolutely love it. Smoke it every day, literally.
Sonny, do you just buy the bulk? And is it exactly the same as the tinned experience? Also, have you tried the cake? I picked up a tin of the cake recently and it was gone before I knew it.
I do just buy the bulk. I did try the cake but didn’t notice a ton of difference to be honest.
Also, you mentioned Chenet’s Cake. You think that one is worth a try if I like Kajun Kake and Bayou Morning? I love blends with heavy perique.
Absolutely!! You’d love it if you like Kajun Kake.
If you haven’t yet, check out my “Perique Heavy-Hitters” series playlist; I think that would give you a lot of good suggestions!
Hey Sonny,
You nailed it on the head with this blend. You said you either love it or hate. I agree but as you said then there is a third category, those who hate it but want to love it then do. This is myself like you.
Have a great day.
JMJ,
Pater Brian
It really is an interesting blend for sure. That’s why I love it. Lol
I have just this week discovered that I am a burley guy. I have been smoking pipes off and on for a lot of years now, but never really found my niche, so I just stuck to the more basic aromatics like Trout Stream and the Boswell's stuff. Just two days ago I tried Haunted Bookshop for the first time, and I am immediately hooked. I had asked a pipe group on FB for recommendations, of which HB was one, but Burley Morning Pipe was also one. I tried for the first time today, and dang, I'm hooked on that one too! I'm definitely a burley guy, and will likely be giving away the rest of my tobaccos. I do NOT like latakia, so that Boswell's Northwoods is just sitting there. Anyways, have a great weekend!
If you’re not a Latakia guy, might wanna rehome that Northwoods. 🤣🤣🤣
@@sonnythepiper lol Yeah, that's the plan. Gonna give it to someone who will enjoy it, or maybe try and trade it for some burley something or other. That, and the Evening Flake I got. Evidently I'm not a VA guy much either...
HBS. It`s not my favorite blend , but it`s my daily and my trusty travel companion as well . I know it sounds schizophrenic ! . But, the availability, the no-frills experience and the consistent taste profile makes it the easy pick for any time .BTW, just ordered a pound of the stuff and its the only blend that I can buy that many of without regret !. maybe it is my fav after all 🤔.
Great review Sonny , keep em comin
HB is also one of my daily go to Burleys. I loved it from puff one, apparently one of “those guys” lol. Have you tried OJK Brown? HB’s bigger rougher brother. But is no one going to mention…….. A ROSSI?? I was just giving you shit the other day about using a briar vs cob & here you are making a habit of that beautiful wood lol.
Lol. I like to change things up sometimes.
Great review. At first I didn’t like it. Now, it is growing on me. I think Three Friars is its younger cousin and OJK is his older. They are all good IMHO - just depends on the mood you are in. Also, great points about it coming in bulk and tins. However, I don’t think the cake comes in bulk. Would like to try the cake sometime. Would also love to see it in classic C&D broken flake form as well. I smoke Bayou Morning and Bayou Morning Flake and the flake is stouter.
Haunted Bookshop and Germain's RDF are my go to.
Love HB, hard to get over here but it would be an everyday all day smoke for me too! It's worth it but I get hiccups and burps from it fresh but a month or two in the jar this dissipates! OJK gets me the same but i love it too!
Oh I absolutely LOOOVE OJK.
awesome backy
The first two smokes - nah. Then, I was a believer. Haunted Bookshop TAKE THE WHEEL!
Absolutely! Delicious stuff.
Sonny, right now while watching your video I smoke Haunted Bookshop for the first time. I've always wanted to try it and having always been a big fan of Matches 860 I was very excited when I received the tin today. Since it is extremely difficult to get hold of Cornell and Diehl in the Netherlands, you can imagine that I couldn't wait. Honestly, I just got half a bowl but you're right.. I don't like it at all and what a nicotine kick.. 🤢 I'll keep trying and hope you're right.. Maybe one day it will also become my favorite but for now I stick with my own lighter tobaccos!🤣 Greetings from the Netherlands!👋
It’s certainly some stout stuff. Give it about 6 months in the jar. Those Virginias will sweeten up and round it out.
From the first time I smoked this I loved it, I won 4 tins from 2008
It’s absolutely perfect imo.
At first the Haunted Bookshop nic hit was a bit much for me. I've always appreciated the way it behaves...burns well, down to ash....I dont like to waste tobacco. HBS comes with me everyday to work. I alternate with Amphora Burley if I take a smoke break. Lately Ive been smoking it nearly every evening too. Over the summer I was liking Old Joe Kranz a little more than Haunted Bookshop. Seems like it keeps changing, but for now HBS is a daily thing, especially in the evening. Love it.
Yeah, my thoughts on those two depend on when you ask me. Lol
I also HATED this blend at first, I had what seemed to be an allergic reaction to it: throat felt like it was closing up, like I literally could not smoke it. Haven’t tried it since, but who knows, maybe I should give it another shot.
That almost sounds like nicotine sickness. Do you usually smoke strong blends?
I don’t think it’s nicotine, since it literally happened after only a few puffs and my nicotine tolerance is relatively high. I tried smoking a few other burley blends and I think something in my chemistry just doesn’t respond well to burley
Let it age about 8 years its 😊great
I tried it once and hated it so much that I couldn’t finish it. I bought it in bulk, and I did notice that it was really dry. May be worth a second try out of a tin.
try to hydrate dry bulks with the paper towel method.
That’s more or less what I do.
if you want more Perique, try out Old Joe Krantz. I'm a fan of this blend, like OJK better. Hated it after the first bowl. Tasted like dog piss... Grew on me and a favorite
I actually did a review of OJK! LLOOOOOOOVE IT.
I’m a fan of Haunted Bookshop
But I’m a C&D fanboy ( their cake (Kake) tobaccos are just so good )
I, too, am a C&D fanboy and I’m not even ashamed at all. Lol
I know 💨💨
Also, I say again, try Match Victorian when you get a chance. Stinky, delicious perique heavy, nastyness (by that i mean greatness).
I'll check it out!
Kentucky boy here. Ohio State sucks balls btw. Love you.
Jerk. Lol
Good video good content if you like Pari, I would get your bad self over to LJ Peretti company tobacco and get 8 ounces of their slices number eight slices your life will change you’re welcome
I like OJK better. But smoke haunted book shop more because it’s a milder nic hit
I like one better than the other. Just depends on when you ask me. 🤣🤣🤣
Sorry, but I just can't take Perique anymore. Smoke what you like and like what you smoke.
Hey all good. Perique is definitely not for everyone, much like Latakia. Lol
That’s a funny coincidence-
This channel is a lot like the typical Burley Journey.
Seems utterly fucking useless at first but eventually starts to make complete fucking sense. 😂😂 😅
Accurate af. Lol. Seems to be the way it goes for a lot of people.
