Many people still know that song, even if they don't realize it's from POCAHONTAS. That song has become a classic.
It's probably the best song from a mediocre Disney film.
It's becoming more of a cult classic and a DISNEY cult classic!
Alan Menken deserves every Oscar he won and nominated to.
That's true, and Stephen Schwartz have won two Oscars 1st was Pocahontas and 2nd was Prince Of Egypt.
I think the Oscar should also give the honour and appreciation for the singer who sings the song. In many occasions, the singers lift up the song and make the song be famous and known by many people. Vanessa name should be in the credit of nominee and go up in the stage with Alan and Stephen to receive the award. She sang this song very beautifully, elegant, and iconic that we love until now. One of the best Disney's songs in the history.
I couldnt agree with you more. I mean i get it! but even Vanessa lewks less than impressed by their blantant disregard for THE talented and very gorgeous Tony (x2) nominated Broadway Superstar; Vanessa Williams. 16 x Grammy nominated performer and she gets NO love here, its criminal. (random) Vanessa appears to give us a taste of her Idol's (Bette Midler) last performance, in the 80s classic "Beaches". I cant be the only one who felt that btw lol
The movie version of the song is performed by Judy Kuhn, and that's the main one. Vanessa sang the pop version.
I agree, I don't like that the singers aren't honored in this award
The award is for writing not for performing. Two different forms of art. Also as stated by someone else this is the Oscars and the song performed for the movie is not Vanessa Williams.
I need a full version of this full orchestra “What’s Love Got to Do With It” that they entered on.
Colors of the Wind was better song than other songs.
I think the song introducing the other songs should have won
True
@@rampageclover9788 lol if only
Even better than "Let It Go."
Even better then You’ve got a friend in me?
That's quite a way to announce the nominees
Joe Whitehead really cool
And the balls on them to wear sneakers to such prestigious event, never mind on stage!
I still come back to this day
Angela Bassett is very, very beautiful
Last time I saw her was in Black Nativity with Forest Whittaker, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige and Tyrese.
nice
MrGabeanator I've also seen her in Akkelah and the Bee which she reunited with Mr. Fishbourne opposite Keke Palmer. In fact , he and Forrest Whittaker are reuniting for Black Panther.
awesome
MrGabeanator IKR!
Eight. That's eight competitive Oscars won by Alan Menken.
spaceye Big record for him indeed. Maybe this year Menken will be an EGOT with an Emmy for one song from the new Tangled series
shoulda been 9 from i see the light, but he got absolutely robbed
Big Jon I thought We Belong Together from TS3 was better
we belong together was nowhere near better, esp if you compare them to how they were used in the film. go watch tangled and try not to be bias towards toy story like 99% of population and ull see i see the light got robbed
Big Jon To each their own. But I did love the lanterns in I See the Light. I love the new Tangled show on Disney Channel
One of the best movie songs ever
Best movie song ever.
Angela Bassett still looks the same today
Between both presenters.
Both would work in a little studio called Marvel two decades later.
Both had films out same year.
Black Panther for Bassett in February 2018.
Ant-Man and The Wasp for Fishburne in July 2018 and under the Disney banner which won this award they presented.
Vanessa Williams is so beautiful
I love her voice! I haven't seen her acting since Hannah Montana the Movie
She's absolutely gorgeous! 😍🔥😍
all were and will always great songs.. but colors of the wind is so deep and meaningful
🎵 From “Pocahontas”, Colors of the Wind, music by Alan Menken and the lyric by Stephen Schwartz 🎵
They're so laid back... if it were me in their position, I would've freaked out.
yep
Annette Szklowin Well, this was Menken's 8th Oscar in 6 years
- "Under the Sea," THE LITTLE MERMAID (1989); shared with Howard Ashman
- "Beauty and the Beast," BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991); shared with Howard Ashman
- "A Whole New World," ALADDIN (1992); shared with Tim Rice
- "Colors of the Wind," POCAHONTAS (1995); shared with Stephen Shwartz
Menken also won Best Original Score for all four movies.
musicaltheatergeek79 so by then he was used to it?
MrGabeanator I think so, but he should've cherished the moment because it was the last time he would win despite being nominated several times since:
- Best Original Score, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1996)
- "Go the Distance," HERCULES (1997); shared with David Zippel
- "Happy Work Song," "So Close," "That's How You Know," ENCHANTED (2007); shared with Stephen Schwartz
- "I See the Light," TANGLED (2010); shared with Glenn Slater
musicaltheatergeek79 you're right I think he should've won for at least one of those imparticulier I see the light
Before this moment of the ceremony, about 1 hour earlier, after the music be performed that night Whoopi Goldberg said: "What's the color of my wind?" Great Whoopi!!
Angela is FINE.
Omg Angela is a vision! So freaking gorgeous!
Bryan Adams wrote and performed another amazing soundtrack song. Unfortunately, he lost, again. There is No justice in this world. Toni Braxton should have been nominated for her Let It Flow (from Waiting to Exhale). And Tina Turner's theme from GoldenEye
alex blend I'm a HUGE Bryan Adams fan and I absolutely love the song he was nominated for; however, Colors of the Wind is a much more important song, especially in today's times. Everyone needs to listen to the lyrics.
Vanessa Williams’ performance of this song is so GOOD!!!!
Laurence and Angela should have both won. Seven years later they give it to Halle.......I'll never understand.
David Richardson You would understand if you knew what the climate was at the time of Berry's win. For starters, Jesse Jackson had been complaining that the Academy was racist, because in the Academy's 74 years (up to that point) only 6 black actors had won :
- Hattie McDaniel, Supporting Actress for GONE WITH THE WIND (1939)
- Sidney Poitier, Best Actor LILLIES OF THE FIELD (1963)
- Louis Gossett, Jr., Supporting Actor for AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN (1982)
- Denzel Washington, Supporting Actor for GLORY (1989)
- Whoopi Goldberg, Supporting Actress for GHOST (1990)
- Cuba Gooding, Jr., Supporting Actor for JERRY MAGUIRE (1996).
Then you have the fact that Sidney Poitier (the first black actor to win Best Actor) was going to be honored with a lifetime achievement Oscar that year, which inspired Julia Roberts to campaign hard for Denzel Washington, saying she didn't want to live in a world where he didn't have a Best Actor Oscar (even though he had already won for Supporting). So then there was this opportunity to give it to him on the same night that Sidney Poitier was being honored, a passing of the torch if you will, since Denzel's win made him only the second black actor to win Best Actor -- a near forty-year gap between Poitier and Washington. But Russell Crowe was in the way, having won all the precursors in quick succession: Critics Choice, Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA. However, Russell tarnished his goodwill by assaulting the producer of the BAFTAs because he'd "dared" to cut out the poem he recited from his acceptance speech. Needless to say, that turned off voters, which helped Denzel in the long run.
Meanwhile, Halle was getting good reviews for MONSTER'S BALL. After she won the Screen Actors Guild award, there was suddenly talk about awarding her, too. This would mean that history would be made in two ways, because never before had two black actors won in the same year, never mind two black actors in the lead categories.
Also, the Best Documentary Oscar would be won by MURDER ON A SUNDAY MORNING, about a black teenager who had been wrongfully convicted of murder.
So that's what happened in a nutshell. After the ceremony, there were accusations that the Academy was just trying to appease Jesse Jackson et al.
musicaltheatergeek79 Halle won mainly because of the sex scenes with Billy Bob Thornton.
@musicaltheatregeek You wrote a long and thoughtful explanation of the climate.... and the guy responded with "she won 'mainly because of the sex scenes.'" HAHA! Don't waste this much time on internet responses, my friend..
@@TheIsh1988 two things can be true
@@musicaltheatergeek79 The Academy Awards had done it again this year, to Angela Bassett right along with Austin Butler!!! 😢
🎵 From “Toy Story,” You've Got a Friend in Me, music and lyric by Randy Newman 🎵
2:40 From Toy Story: "You've Got a Friend In Me" Music and Lyrics by Randy Newman
Yep
Angus Ng I just loved the way they announced it in song!
People, those were songs!! So deserved!
Prêmio merecido! Ótima canção.
You ever think Alan Menken got sick of winning? lol
Meteorite Entertainment no but the academy did
Ever thought Walt Disney got tired of winning 22 Oscars?
Pocahontas - "Colors of the Wind"
Sabrina - "Move it You"
Usual Suspects - "Suspended
A Goofy Movie - " Suprise"
The Pizza - "Head Hatch and Tom"
JORGE RUIZ V. Dude i think you are missing You got a friend in me
How dare you leave out You've Got a Friend in Me? It'd be blasphemous to leave it out of the nominations.
Ughhh her necklace a piece of beautiful art
Alan menken is my favorite composer
Amazing song, and a personal favorite in movies.
Your suggestion would make every Sunday a wonderful way to start the work week....with Oscar clips.
Navid
this is his 8th academy award
I have always listened to this song from childhood to adulthood the music in that movie 💋🤌🏾
Take 6! Love those dudes. Brian McKnight's brother is in the group.
And it was a award that was deserved.
yep
Please upload the wins for A Star is Born, Thank God It's Friday!, Norma Rae, Fame, Arthur, Flashdance, The Woman in Red, White Nights, Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, The Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Evita, The Motorcycle Diaries, & Crazy Heart!
Please upload Kay Rose and Margaret Booth receiving Oscars.

You might be surprised at who the person behind the screen name is.
Angela looks about the same in 2022! Lol
Crazy how Stephen already has 2 Oscars and is yet to win a Tony.
Should have won for Wicked in 2004
@@manuelorozco7760 alas, the little puppet show made a propaganda against Wicked.
@@CountryCowboy008 Dont remind me. Did not care for Avenue Q
In the 80s movies with big dance numbers or big performances (Fame, Flash Dance etc) dominated the best oscar for songs and in the 90s Disney Movie theme songs just obliterated the competition. The Lion King was nominated 3 times in it's category.
And so was Beauty and the Beast. That also was nominated three times in the Best Original Song category.
Some of you all don't know the art of harmonizing.
Colors of the Wind is a beautiful song! However, You Got A Friend in Me from Toy Story should have won. Also, I liked Ms. Bassett and Mr. Fishbourne together in Akkelah and the Bee opposite Keke Palmer.
I couldn't agree more! "Colors of the Wind" is even more beautiful when it's sung in Spanish than in English!
@@zeldafan1942 Never knew that
love take 6
Just simply reading out the nominees would have been a better option
siddharth nagar I didn't understand the nominated song from Sabrina
The best song ever!! 😊🙏🍃🍃🍃🍃
If only they had put if I never knew you in the movie that could’ve possibly been nominated and given a deserving nod to Shanice and John cicada
I’d rather Mel Gibson and Judy Kuhn be given a nod, I think their version is better plus it’s kind of nice to see Mel Gibson on the stage here that is not Braveheart.
I’m here because of Quincey Jones book 😊where we talked about it this in page 166
YAY! Go Stephen Schwartz!
I prefer his music from Wicked, Prince of Egypt and Pippin.
love Judy Kuhn's version
love it
🎵 Yesssssss! 🎵
Rightful winner of the award though, colors of the wind is timeless and fantastic. Douche bags could've at least thanked Vanessa Williams as well.
Didn't you heard? Menken even began his speech by thanking her!
They said "Thank you Vanessa Williams" at the start? How did you not hear it!
I love you got a friend in me it was the first song I truly lifell in loved with as a kid but colors of the wind is beautiful so I don’t know how to feel about this 😂
I love pocahontas
Wonderful.
:-)
I wonder how would Pocahontas' songs sound with Howard Ashman's lyrics...
aedithmoreno Sadly we will never know.
We can probably imagine what the Howard Ashman version of Colors of the Wind sounds like in the alternate universe where Howard Ashman never had AIDs and lived to see his work on Beauty and the Beast be successful and his version of Aladdin with the deleted songs was the version of Aladdin we grew up with instead of the original 1992 post his death with Tim Rove's lyrics and collaborated with Alan Menken on The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Enchanted, and Tangeled.
We don't know. However, I think that Ashman was the perfect lyricist for fabulous tales, Schwartz for realistic and mature tales. They both did a great job
Question: If one of the songs from A Goofy Movie was nominated, what would it be? For me, it would be Nobody Else But You
I think Stand Out
I to I
As opposed to, say, anything *you've* ever written?
🎵 Ohhhhh! 🎵🎵
I never made comment three days ago. Someone somehow made that comment.
Wonderful song, but Randy Newman's "You've got a friend in me" remains the best (and Toy Story a true masterpiece)!
Do you know the depth and meaning in the lyrics of Colors of the Wind compared to You've got a friend in Me? Its a nice song but not comparable at all.
@@lanacastillo49 totally agree. Colors of the Wind is the hymn of humanity
Hopefully more movies about Native Americans would win an Oscar
I wonder If Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne, and Take 6 ever heard about Michael Jackson's (R.I.P) Passing?.
Janie Doe I'm sure they have but what's your point?
that's number 8
Randy Newman was a worthy apponnet
are they wearing XIs??!?!

the 68th academy awards in 1996 should be ashamed themselves because they didnt nominate these songs that year ''hold me thrill kiss me kill me'' from batman forever ''kiss from a rose'' from batman forever ''if i never knew you'' from pocahontas 'ganster's pardise' from dangerous minds and ''i will remember you'' from the brothers mcmullen
what would you swap out personally i'd take out true lies and swap in kiss from a rose
MrGabeanator true lies is a movie not a song and it was made in 94 not 95
oops I meant moonlight
MrGabeanator the song from Sabrina
what would you replace
Two Hebrew brothers get up like.. sup
Why is Vanessa Williams crying.
Because she is the lead singer on this song
+Bruno Entringer So, it's not like she was Pocahontas but I must admit, the orchestra made it sound very sad. Also Why was Pocahontas drawn as an Asian? Native Americans aren't Mongoloids. Native Americans are their own race. They didn't come from Asia.
Thanks for the information. Yes I can see them most in Inuit and Canadians as well as South American indigenous but not in american indians. Some of them look totally white or a kind of white hispanic.
Thank you. On contrary, you interested me. Are you Native American btw? I agree on most points but I believe Native Americans have high nose bridges and since Pocahontas belonged to the East Coast where Viking civilization flourished, I don't think she could've looked like that.
***** Sorry. I hadn't received the notification. Thank you for sharing your great knowledge. Disney Pocahontas as well as most Native Americans resemble Asians. East Asians are just a section of Asians. Some Japanese and most important ethnic Tibetans (because of their sculpted features) resembles natives the most as well as Polynesians like in the Amazon. You can check them out. No wonder I thought Graham Greene was Asian because I found him just like my people who do not look East Asian. Also a lot of old photos show Mongoloid features like Sitting Bull.
I like pocahontas and everything but how did Toy story loose to it
Well, think about the message of “Colors of the Wind”. It’s conveying us to actually learn from others who are different from us, which is the equivalent of learning another’s culture, and how we’re all the same even with our differences and we should be united instead of believing the stereotypes associated with minorities. And especially in today’s climate, this song really is more relevant than ever. “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”, on the other hand, while not a bad song, is just your typical friendship song and even its lyrics are no different than what you’d ordinarily hear in other friendship songs. Don’t get me wrong, the message of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” is good, but compared to “Colors of the Wind”, it’s not really a socially relevant song.
"Colors of the Wind" deserved the Oscar. But the presenters' dialog and the Take 6 performance were so terrible... Cheesy. Angela Basset looked every inch a star, though.
I luv it:-) :-)
true
everyone! :D
No homo but Laurence Fishburne was one good looking man...the singing was cheesy as fuck though
Vanessa only got to sing a 90 second truncated version of Colors of the Wind but I'm happy we got to listen to these clowns for 4 minutes.
Actually, "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" by Bryan Adams was pretty popular at the time. Constantly on the radio and #1 in various countries. I think that would've won instead. "You've Got a Friend in Me" was seen as another run-of-the-mill Randy Newman song. It only got nominated because the movie was a big hit.
Do you know the depth and meaning in the lyrics of Colors of the Wind compared to You've got a friend in Me? Its a nice song but not comparable at all.
The introduction by Basset and Fishburne: Awesome. The singing: Not
That Tina Turner joke was so tasteless. 😒
Black Excellence
those dudes got jays on hell naw
🎵🎵
❤🌎🦅
Bru-u-c-e Springsteen hahahaah
Is anyone going to talk about how Judy kuhn sang it in pocahontas now she is the real star
barely. You obviously have NO clue why this twice Tony nominated Broadway Superstar was chosen to sing, and not the Kuhnster herself. Idk, maybe its the 16 Grammy nominations Vanessa already has under her belt that sent COTW into worldwide smash hit #3 Billboard stratosphere or perhaps because she's a huge trailblazing star.
❤💚💙🇵🇭🎶🎵🎵
its not even the colors of the wind
Over fifteen-plus years, and who the heck remembers "Colors of the Wind"?
I do.
I do!
God that presentation of the nominees was fucking awful.
Wow wtf were they doing back then at the oscars? That quartet was fucking awful
Why Oscars always goes to stupid cartoons? Every year same cliche. That year Bruce Springsteen or Bryan Adams should win.
Your comment is stupid. Colors of the Wind won everything on 1996. It is a beautiful song.
If you like cliche songs than its your call but academy is predictable on most of these stupid cartoons. I`d rather go with something more original. Next.
2 Oscars, one Golden Globe, one Grammy, one ASCAP > Your opinion. End.

kid, its not a problem of awards but the old formula they use. Simple.
is good
Laurence and Angela should have both won. Seven years later they give it to Halle.......I'll never understand.
