    Man the shot at 6:00 is lovely! Would def love to see a video on how you expose in those dynamic lighting situations on film.

    • @mattdayphoto
      @mattdayphoto  2 роки тому +7

      Thank you, man! With situations like this, if I'm using the internal meter in the camera I'm using (always lol) I'll find any kind of "spot" in my scene that has relatively consistent light values on it and read the light off of that as if it were a gray card. It's never actually a gray card so I kinda have to imagine how much darker or lighter that area is than a middle gray, essentially as if I were using the zone system. Like this shot here, I know I got in close with my M6 and metered off of Elliott's skin, which is obviously much brighter than middle gray. So I took my reading and then compensated by overexposing a couple of stops so that my highlights were actually highlights and not being exposed as middle gray.
      I really hope this makes sense. Haha. I should probably do a video on something like this!

    • @eddie_g
      @eddie_g 2 роки тому

      @@mattdayphoto Gotcha thanks! It does haha just gotta read through it a few times. I usually meter with a grey card in most situations.

    Hey Matt,
    Great video! I just love the kind of photos you make. If you go through social media, alot of times it's all about making flashy photos that get the most attention. But in the end they are just empty. Making photos of loved ones, and making GREAT photos of loved ones. That is just the best way of using photography.

    • @mattdayphoto
      @mattdayphoto  2 роки тому +2

      I appreciate that! You said it best. If I'm making pictures that mean a lot to me and to the people in them, that's all I can hope for!

    Matt, the way you shoot your family is unbelievable to me. You're able to capture special moments, but compose them so effortlessly-it's honestly mind-blowing to witness. My baby girl is just 10 months old right now, but I hope I eventually can make images like these when she grows up. Thanks for this video, and can't wait to see what's in your backlog! This was such a good idea.

      Truly! Although so far in my developing of this backlog, I'm wondering if my eyes are getting worse because focusing seems to be quite the issue these days 🤣

    • @waratkasitanon5323
      @waratkasitanon5323 2 роки тому

      @@mattdayphoto I don't see any focusing issue with the images, they are quite sharp! You are so humble :D If I may try to help, the problem is not whether you nailed the focus because you did nail it. The problem probably is releasing your right hand too fast after you pressed the shutter. I had this episode using the Leica and wondered why my shots wear slightly blurry even if the shutter speed is high enough for handheld (my usual shutter speeds). We sometimes get comfortable with the camera that we forgot the basic of holding that breath when pressing the shutter. :D I might be wrong but I am sure your focus is perfect Matt. and whether its sharp or not I think your photos are still amazing!

    Super cool vid - nice to chill and watch the process. I need to get to it soon too! and....
    Oh man! It's wicked seeing the Delta exploration train must be 6 or 7 years ago you were always going off about HP5 and I'd never shot it (mostly Kodak for years n years when I did shoot B&W) so after you going on I tried some. Really liked it, but never loved it, but since I'd been buying Ilford and shot Delta 100 a number of times I tried Delta 400 and pushed it a stop on a few rolls, just like this. A month later I bought a can of it! It's been my regular ever since.
    You have to a be a little nicer to Delta400 - it'll crush the black quicker when pushed, but +1 in XTOL is my very favorite everyday B&W look. The sharpness and but still with a bit of that HP5 grit (when pushed), but tones for daaaaaaays. Love Delta. Cheers

    I really feel taken back into my time as a student when I shot a lot of film and developed it myself. Thanks for bringing back those sweet memories! ❤ BTW did you ever do any densitometry of your processing? Maybe its the scanning but the results to me look as if the they would profit from an increase in exposure and a decrease in development: More detail in the shaddows, less blocked highlights. Negatives which look "good" are usually overdeveloped. They have to look soft and greyish to be perfect. Learned it the hard way...

      Thanks man! To be honest, it's been a long time since I've used NLP, I've heard it's been updated since I last used it and it's been even more improved, but I don't know that personally. I kinda like the manual inversion because I see every step and know exactly what changes are being made. But maybe there's another advantage to NLP that I'm just not aware of or don't remember? All I can say is for color, I would never do it manually. NLP is a must for me when it comes to scanning color. But black and white? I can work with that.

    Love this, dude. These images are awesome and so inspiring. Quick question, did you shoot the delta at box speed? Or did you push it like your hp5?

      After I stopped shooting weddings and portrait work for hire, I decided to sell my equipment that I bought for that work specifically. Love the system, just too. much money in gear to be sitting there unused and not making any income like they once were.

    Love the photos, beautiful family, great video…but I totally disagree with your crops. You frame really well in/camera so why not just go with it?😊

    I don’t think you’d be getting a proper conversion by hand. Even if you do manual adjustments. But I’m not entirely azure.
