@@ono6208 I don't think so. This crash is caused by a combination of moves, happening too fast to react when you're boxed in in a peleton. The Australian rider cuts Gaviria, goes from the red line to the black one. Gaviria (gold medalist) slows down and the gap between his backwheel and the Dutchman's front wheel suddenly gets diminished from about one foot, to an inch. Then Gaviria stands on his bike and by doing so he thrusts his bike backwards, overlapping his last wheel on the inside of the front wheel. Gaviria not only stands, but steers from inside the black line to the outside, thus catching the front wheel and making the Dutchman fall.
This was actually one of the most entertaining sporting events I've ever watched. Why are we all watching football? This is actually way more interesting.
I really don't get why for each elimination the camera zoomes on the eliminated cyclist, then on the judge showing the number/flag, then on the eliminated guy again -- in the meanwhile the most interesting part of the race is going on, in which the cyclists position themselves for the next sprint. And all the elimination races are filmed this way!!! It is not interesting and irritating, imho.
Excellent video, thanks mate. So this guy Gavira is the one who everybody is talking about... impressive. I saw him the first time @ the Tour of Britain winning a stage without a leading train and defeating a bunch of old dingoes including Griepel. Without a doubt Ettix has the best sprinters. I reckon the duel of the future will be between Caleb Ewan and this guy.
Good question, you need to keep in mind that since everyone starts at the same time, the individuals at the front are exerting themselves the most in order to keep the lead. If the race were to be restarted after every round so that the people in the back catch up to the pack, that would essentially punish those a the front of the pack for being in the lead.
Because of the aerodynamics it's far easier because you have the rider Infront taking the wind stream so it is a large advantage as long as you don't get boxed
I really need to find a video that explains the various races that happen on these types of tracks. As of now I don't really understand anything that they are doing other than trying to go fast.
If you're in the UK you can go along for taster sessions and/or professional instruction at lots of the velodromes around the country, at least the case at Manchester velodrome anyway. Alternatively join a cycling club with track access.
I'm American. I've never heard of this type of cycling before seeing this video and definitely don't have those types of tracks where I live. It looks awesome though. I have been watching videos and learning more about it in the process.

Well, I already understand why some track cyclists who switch to road cycling turn out to be good sprinters like Fernando Gaviria (the colombian guy), they are used to accelerating in very short times, although of course, on the road they have to get used to long races.
Because the acceleration from dropping in accelerates you to massive speeds so on the last lap if you dont drop your opponent its a straight sprint so hitting the max speed for your last run is essential
I’m a cyclist and I participate in this type of races, starting on front doesn’t make any difference in one lap you could be on front and the next one eliminated so it is basically random
Wow this is super intellectual and strategic. Like chess but athletic. Also that's a really long race, if you win! I think it's interesting with the elimination because you want to not be eliminated but you also want to save as much energy as you can so they have to find a balance sort of
