Thanks for watching! If you wanna watch another fun little video about another St. John's quirk, try this one 👉🏼 ua-cam.com/video/-Iv5zBk6fbI/v-deo.html
I’m from Saint John NB, which is established as Canada’s oldest incorporated city. This is the first time I have ever heard of such claims about St. John’s. I wonder if it’s just a hopeful tale that’s not actually making it to anyone’s attention beyond the borders of Newfoundland? Kind of like how Saint John claims to be famous around the world for its “Reversing Falls” rapids, which in reality no one from outside the city has ever even heard of, haha.
Yup. Or that Cape Spear is the most easterly point in North America. It's the most easterly point in Canada. But Greenland is also part of North America, and it's most easterly point, Nordostrundingen, is obviously significantly further east than Cape Spear.
We'll twist ourselves up to no end in order to justify silly claims that make us feel special... when there are so many things we can point to that already make us special without being forced. Thanks as always for watching and for your comment my friend!
Not only is greenland part of north america but half of iceland is , too. Iceland is split between the n. Amer. plate and the european plate, hence all that volcanic activity
VERY interesting that the city burned to the ground a few times in the 1800s. Apparently that is a pretty common trend with old North American cities in that time period. I highly recommend a channel called “my lunch break” to learn more.
Someone finally broke the story. Now, look what you've done, Mark ! (🤣) This is a twist in our history, stories, truths & untruths. No matter if St. John's is the oldest or not, this video is well produced with professional editing. Mark, you sure know how to stir up a conversation. Great work, my son.
Well, this news to me and I am sure you have done your homework on this so I take it for what you say............a little more on dates and where is the oldest city and such would be nice to know........another great one Mark........
That's right. L'anse Aux Meadows. But they weren't the Finish Vikings. Erik the Red I think came from Norway then to Iceleand ...then convinced people to follow him from Iceland to "Greenland"
That is an issue worthy of its own full video. St. John's appeared on a map as early as the 1540s, but there was literally no one living there. A big historical event occurred on the shore of St. John's harbour in 1583, and this is sometimes thought of as the year the city was founded for some reason, but that wasn't the case at all. Permanent settlement started around 1620. You have to twist yourself into a pretzel even just to determine when the city was founded, let alone how to justify the claim that it's the oldest city in North America.
St. John's is a fantastic city. I suggest anyone in my circle of friends/acquaintances that haven't been there to put it on their lists. Spend a few days, rent a car, travel the province for as long as you can
Anyone could learn a lot from your videos, Mark! Love it when you bring up these little things that we hardly ever question😊. Yes, we had people living here thousands of years ago and yes, we were discovered centuries ago by European fishermen….lots there to be proud of! Just thinking about it can keep me busy for hours, even without any certifications like oldest city or most easterly point! Thanks Again, Always enjoy!👍🏻
Thank you for the history lesson. I had not heard that particular lie myself and would have known it as such just from remembering a few basics from school. More than ever, thanks to your lesson, I want to visit your home.
Likely given the same treatment as Puerto Rico or worse 💀 I rarely hear Americans discuss, with interest, any area beyond California, Florida, or New York. Newfoundland would’ve been better off with the UK or independence than being some exploited or neglected territory for the same Americans that invented the word “Newfie” as a slur to call Newfoundlanders while mocking their intelligence. As for it being apart of Canada, I couldn’t say how much better than independence it is, but I’m sure many would agree it’s better than most alternatives.
@mark_royle_newfoundland I've heard Water St is the oldest street. I heard the Irish tricolour is based off our Newfoundland tricolour. Cabot landing in Bonavista ( no one really knows). Irish princess Sheila NaGeira buried in Carbonear. Those are just a few off the top of my head...
Hey Mark, Mr. Garry here with your 101 View, 28 LIKE and your 5th Comment! I would love to see a NEW major city on the Avalon and it should be called the City of Avalon.

St. John's and NL are lovely, and don't need any lies to enhance their charm.
Irishman here who spent 6months in Newfoundland in 2017!! Can't wait to go back, have got great memories of the place.. keep the videos coming ❤
Thanks! I will keep them coming and I hope you'll keep watching!
@ecorevurbanfarms5366 Glad to know that you enjoyed your visit so well. I do hope you have an opportunity to come back again.
your camera work is amazing

@@sgrant9814 I didn't know that! Thanks for the information. You never know what you can learn from a friendly commenter on UA-cam! Cheers!
Thanks from a Newfoundlander in NC
My pleasure. Thanks for watching ☺️

You may not be oldest, but you are one of the best cities!! Loved my visit there.

I ❤Newfound land.
I'm a townie and St. John's isn't even the oldest community in Newfoundland.
Haha yup! Such a weird fact for us to just gloss over!
We're to pretty to be OLD LOL, Another great one my buddy , hope you have an awesome weekend
I love, love, love how you show your love for this beautiful place . I just can’t wait for 2025 to come back .
We'll be lucky to have you back my friend!
@ thank you so very much 🥰
Your argument is well made and on point. No shame in a little excessive pride, even though it is a bit of a fib. Wink!
Be well and stay safe

Rare to see Newfoundlanders calling out their own. Pandora's box all day.
New Finland, because of the Vikings being there first (except for the First Nations who were really first)
That's right. L'anse Aux Meadows. But they weren't the Finish Vikings. Erik the Red I think came from Norway then to Iceleand ...then convinced people to follow him from Iceland to "Greenland"

I was kidding about Finland, but its because people pronounce it like New Finland, instead of new found land
St. John's has a Strawberry Marsh Road!
In my eyes the entire earth is the same age so to me it doesn't matter. Live for today and be blessed for living in the most unique land on earth.
Love seeing our beautiful City ❤
Love seeing your name in the comment section ☺️
St John's Newfoundland is not.
Not the oldest city in North America.
It's not
You explained your findings but not when it was actually founded. 😢

Couldn't agree more, and I hope your friends listen to your wise words!
Mark, you talk about your city, your province with your ❤.
Thanks for this video. I'm sure I'll be amazed about NFL next May. Take care of you,
Anne
Thank you Anne, I always appreciate you coming back to watch! May isn't that far away!

Thanks Emily. There's so much to be proud of without stretching the truth.
Thank you 🙏😊
It’s my pleasure.
We're lucky🌈🌈There's no place in the world like Newfoundland ❤️🧿
You got that right!
Thank you for the history lesson. I had not heard that particular lie myself and would have known it as such just from remembering a few basics from school.
More than ever, thanks to your lesson, I want to visit your home.
Thank you Ruth 😊
I wonder how much better off St John’s would be today if it had joined the US instead of Canada in 1949?
For better or for worse, there's no doubt in my mind that things would be very, very different.
@bjdon99 odds are it wouldn't be a govt funded communist gathering place, so I'd say much better off.

Probably best to ask anyone from Puerto Rico..
They are better off in Canada, by far....
😂😂😂
We tells lots of fibs! It's part of the charm.
Haha yes I spose you're right with that
