I have this same noise on a new FB25 engine installed by the dealer. New short block and heads, re-used cam carriers. Occurs on startup after engine has run for at least 20 mins and then sat for a few hours. Goes away within 5 minutes of idling. Subaru dealership advised me to put miles on it to see if it went away, and then bring it back to address at first oil change.
What nonsense. No, bad counsel. A properly rebuilt engine doesn't have that sound. Definitely timing, but that is a ______knock of some type. It will only get worse.
I have same problem i replace ingition coils and spark plugs then there noise came from the engine after one day then i found part of spark plugs broken and maybe go inside the engine
After recondition my forester use too mutch oil I have surprise hear same. Is it 4 camchaft us.Now i stop rebuilt and want change the engine.Only 140.000miles.
This is normal sound, because the oil used in Subarus 2.0 (ow-20) is really thin, so when it gets at temperature the oil is basically water, but dont worry use full synthetic ow-20, the engine is made specifically for that oil.
My 2014 Outback has the same noise as your car has but in a less noticeable way, and it’s on its 2ed 2.5L engine. Mine only has 149,896 miles on it. I’m the 2ed owner of mine and most likely with it second engine replacement no more than 90,000 miles, the last person beat on it and did not get it serviced on time. Me on the other hand do not beat on it, only if I need to I will.
Just rebuilt an FB25 engine like this one. All new internals. Yes everything. Still have a slight knock to it that sounds like rod knock. These FB25s are just a poorly designed engine.
@@lukevandervennen3939 happened to me in early last year.i changed the oil and the sound was gone.thats the rod knocking sound your hearing because your Subaru is low on oil and when I say low I really mean low.Low to the point where when you drain the oil when you changing it it won’t even be enough to full up 1 quartz
So u can’t turbo the fb25 right? How hard would it be to take a turboed motor out of a wrx and swap it into my legacy? Also will I have to change out the cvt?
Yes! Different CVT. Turbo and 3.6 models use the TR690 high torque CVT. Want more power? Get the legacy 3.6 engine and CVT combo and swap that. You will also need a bigger radiator.
It's fine, it identifies as a diesel now.
The FB25 sounds dieselly idling and V-8ish while driving. I actually love it. Such a quirky but badass engine.
My Outback’s FB25 with over 100K does not sound like that at all. I’d almost say you got some kind of weird issue there with the valves.
Timing chain tensioner rattle for sure

Variable cam actuators i bet
Mine had same noise. It dissapear after replacing ignition coils and spark plugs...
What brand did u buy??

Rod bearings aren’t happy at all lol. I’ve seen that happen at 70k miles to Subaru since they burn so much oil

Piston slap?
Pretty sure that's a normal subi sound 🤔
Could be a rocker. Did you end up fixing it and finding out?
It's time for new rods

@joshuabaumgardner4124 Just like anything, if it's maintained properly and not abused, it will easily go 200k miles.
What was the issue and was it fixed? I got the exact same engine. 2014 subaru outback 2.5L
sorry just seeing this now. did you get it fixed?

Sound’s louder than Im used too.. Something is wrong
What was the outcome on this car?
Death rattles
Sounds like piston slap and if it gets louder when throttling then maybe its jus knock subies suck
Sounds fine to me😂
Probably got a misfire

Subap vuruyo
Throw it away and rebuild stronger 😂
