OMG how she manages to sing such an emotional piece without breaking down in tears I don't know! It made me cry just listening to it. Most of her songs do that because she sings so beautifully, you'd have to be dead not to feel something. She's awesome.
The construction of this performance is incredible. The coerence with the colours of the text and the melodie, and the way that Lady Fleming interprets the emotional carg of this personage whas absolutly brillant. Thanks, Renné. Your legacy is unnegable.
Renee always delivers the song with emotion...a great actress on top of a fabulous coloratura sporano. If you’ve ever seen this Opera, you’ll know that Puccini meant it to be played with this feeling
Bravo! Stunning! Tonight I have listened to the same from Callas, Tebaldi, Sutherland, Caballe, Gheorghiu, and Koppel and have appreciated the beauty in each of these great singers. Instead of making the comparisons and put downs, celebrate the wonder of great music and how it can be interpreted in many ways by these extremely talented and individual performers.
I agree whole heartedly. Just because one feels one singer is great does not diminish the other singers. They are all different and each so beautiful. Are there so many great artists around that we can destroy any one of them with criticism?
Finalmente ! Someone who appreciates many singers and their different approaches and interpretations. We all may have favourites but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate performances from others and give them credit too.
Well, I listened to this three times, and I still think it the most convincing rendition of a woman in agony of mind - a woman who has discovered that devotion to neither God, nor man, nor art, will protect her from human evil. You can make the aria more balanced, more subtle, more exquisite, but you can't make it more heart-wrenching.
Fleming is perfect! Her school is very special. Desdemona is my favorite of her performance.. Her book is very interesting or me. God bless this outstanding singer!
I love this very much...last week i found for the first time an opera singer i never hear before ( yes i feel ashame) Daniela Dessi.....i was blown away! That voice took me instandly....but that said: Renee Fleming is beautiful too
Are you people insane?!?!?! Lol this aria is perfection for her. Her lyrical sound is perfect for this aria. Her technique is beyond solid. One has to think about longevity in this arena and she has allowed her lyrical sound to soar though the opera world, which is something Leotyne Price talks about all the time. Every singer must approach everything from a lyrical point of view and not make their voices dramatic. Her voice is fresh and oustanding here.
Compare Renee's 53 year old voice here to a recent rendition of this aria on the Elvis Costello show. Her 59 year old voice sounds just the same! Talk about longevity!!!
In my opinion, and I have seen this number hundreds of times, her presentation of this challenging aria is one of my favorites. I feel that Angela Georgieu has delivered the all around best modern delivery. Although this piece was not expressly written with Renées quality in mind, her emotive expression and quality here are superb.
My favourite female singers are Sondra Radvonosky, Renee Fleming and Maria Callas. My favourite male singers are Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Luciano Pavarotti (and for the last one I can't remember who it was, but I might edit this later when or if I do remember who)...

To those criticizing....have you ever seen an opera? The emotions shown here are an integral part of the character singing the aria. The concert setting here does not negate the need for the emotions necessary to sing the aria correctly in the opera. Renee is singing just like she sings in an opera role.
Chris Ellis That isn’t the issue. The point is that Fleming is a great artist with a great voice, but she cheapens every note and phrase of this old chestnut. If she had just sung the damn thing as it’s written, without holding the high notes all summer, it would’ve been stunning.
People be respectful. Let me tell you this: A friend of mine violin player at the National Opera of Paris did several productions with her. She is an impeccable professional , always there on time and a great colleague. Here she was it's true a bit overperforming the Aria: I think she was perhaps a tiny bit afraid of it and as a performer myself I know that when you wanna be perfect sometimes you put too much pressure on your shoulders and you wanna show them you nail it but actually no !!!!

She got the top note without setting the body...So...lost the support but...fixed the thing very well in order not to faill...She is very experient and accomplished singer
Fleeming - after 2000 - always reminds me of what somebody said to me about late Sutherland: "She is howling - she is howling lovely, but she is howling" Fleming is not attacking a single note straightforward here, but sliding up and down the line. No taste at all - IMO
+THOMAS MICHAEL Guenther why would you attack this aria? its not a verdi spinto aria. look up the actual words and tell me its something she should be attacking. shes actually doing something called acting.
arenyndriel in the opera, the villain Scarpia tells Tosca that he'll let her boyfriend go if she sleeps with him. This is her pleading with him and God..."I've lived for art, I've lived for love..I'm a good person. God why do you do me this way?"
If you are like me, listening to the aria hundreds or thousands of times, it is more enjoyable if you understand the lyrics. I always google the lyrics. Sometimes they come with translation. If not, I use google translate.

There are things to hear here, but she draws too much attention and takes away from the aria. Tebaldi is too powerful. Maybe Te Kanawa; yes, I'll listen to her.
Fleming HAD one of the most beautiful voices . But, like the ballet dancers, the opera singers do not have extremely long careers. They may sing as long as they want - the point is how it sounds ! Here she is still at her peak.

Of course she is a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice. But Renee is up to her usual habits of adding in little gasps, pauses, and other effects to make the aria her own. If she sang it in a straightforward manner, she would be brilliant. Nonetheless, I think she is a great artist - but not in this aria.
@@wotan10950 Did you ever hear Flemming singing American national anthem? She improvised so much that she sounded almost like Whitney Houston, who was a great singer with a beautiful voice. But Houston can't sing classical music. Nor should Flemming try to sound like a pop singer.
I love Fleming, but I agree that this was during a period where she overworked everything and art became artifice. It’s not her best singing, and luckily she has reverted to a simpler performing style now.
Janet Flier Ah, we agree on something! I despise Callas. Her ugly voice, her sleazy life, her gay fans who hold her up as the greatest thing since Saran Wrap!
