Cinder Blocks and Succulents

- Gotta love succulents! Especially when there is a clever way to hold and arrange them. Cinder blocks cost only about $1.50 USD each. This has to be one of the cheapest and easiest ways to create your own modern succulent planter.

I've read that cinder blocks leach poison into the soil and plants, so no good for vegetables etc.

Hi awesome diy just one question, any alternative for landscape fabric?
Very beautiful ☺️ I love this idea thank you ☺️. Also I love being barefoot but be careful not to hit your little toe with the corner of one block it hurts😩
Q-birt style, I dig it
Good job
Pode me me orientar? Obrigada.
I love what am seeing
Nice.
Amazing
Beautifull
that is soooo cool
Nice
Good job...🇮🇩
👍👍👍👍👍
I'm surprised that the landscape cloth holds tightly enough to keep the soil from falling through on the blocks that suspend above the ground. No problems with that? BTW, I LOVE this and will get started as soon as you reply about the suspended blocks.
+PAMELA VAN SICKLEN It's been a year now. No problem whatsoever 😉
Wow !!! I’m wondering the same
Would watering the plants having them leak to the balcony floor cause issues in a long term?
Hello this is an awesome build may I ask something?
do we need to glue the landscape fabric to every block?
Hey there.. Good question. I only glued to the bottom of the ones I knew I would be putting plants in. So the only ones that have exposed openings.
Could this be used as a short retaining wall, as well? Seems like an easy solution for a 2.5' wall
I don't see why not 😉
👍👍
tetris this is when you relies tetris was not a waste of time after all
Good
Hey there! I love this idea and your arrangement, I've been wanting to do something similar on my patio. Question for you: have you noticed any issues related to the water falling to the ground inside the cinderblock holes (under where the plants are) and getting trapped there? Or does the water do a good job of evaporating? I rent my current place and worry about damaging the cement on my patio if the excess water cannot escape - perhaps a silly concern, but want to make sure.
I haven’t noticed any issues with that. To my knowledge, the water is evaporating just fine. Maybe you could put something on the ground first to help prevent any water damage?
Dude, that was awesome. Great layout.
Did you have to cut some of the blocks in half?
Thanks! I did not cut any. They come in two sizes: single core and double core.
Gooooooooooioood❤️❤️❤️❤️
the doubles that overhang, is the garden cloth the only thing keeping the dirt in?
Yup. And it’s held up totally fine for a few years now.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👍🌵
Hi! Any chance you could specify what kind of landscape fabric you used?
Sorry for the late reply. There is a link on the website (acreativetraveler.com): acreativetraveler.com/cinder-blocks-and-succulents/
Thanks for watching!
Waw waw waw braveaux
And in cold winter???
I'm having a heck of a time figuring out the layout, I thought there were half blocks but I guess some are turned up ? How many in total did you use, that might help. It was way to fast for this Canadian...
+Martine Bangs Lol.. It took me a while to figure out a decent layout too. None of the block are turned up. There are double core and single core used. I will try to figure out the number of each and let you know.
So I used 16 double core blocks and 5 single core blocks in total.
I will list each row, from left to right, starting with the bottom row. All blocks are laid parallel to the walls they are against unless specified as "turned". If it says "turned" then turn those blocks so they are perpendicular to the surrounding wall. The "*" block is the one that touches the corner/ middle of the arrangement:
Row 1 (bottom)- single, double turned, single, double, double*, double, double
Row 2- double, double turned, double, single*, double, double turned, single
Row 3- double, double*, double turned, double
Row 4- double, double*
Row 5 (top)- single*
I hope this makes sense! I can't think of a better way to explain it. Good luck!
That's great, thank you...made a sketch :)
Enjoy! Let me know if you have any other questions

Thank you for sharing your great design! And thanks too for writing out the plan.
You should share it in the descriptions section directly below the video. I haven't made your project...yet, but reading through the comments I've seen several people comment that they had trouble figuring out how you actually put it all together.
Plus in the comments section we're not able to copy what you've written.
Every block has 2 holes in the begining. How do you have the single hole block? Did you cut it? Or you can buy the half size single hole block?
You can buy them as double or single core.
